Whatever Happened to Stourbridge Film Society?
Stourbridge Film Society was formed in 1985, and between then and 1998 it organised thirteen seasons’ containing between 16 and 20 films each, which were screened in the Wollaston Room at Stourbridge Town Hall on alternate Tuesday evenings between September and May each year.
The Society had auspicious beginnings, with over 200 members and a promotional campaign and season that earned it the British Federation of Film Societies’ award as Best New Film Society in the UK.
By the mid-1990s Stourbridge was one of the only film societies in the UK to be showing its films on 35mm - just like cinemas. It even took Peral & Dean advertising. But the projectors it used began to breakdown, and the company that imported them went out of business, so after completing its 1998 season, the society was wound down
Stourbridge Film Society - The Sequel?
Thanks to the Stourbridge Film Festival in May 2003, the film society was revived. It has also inherited some state-of-the-art DVD and data projection equipment from the festival, and talks are now underway to organise a new season of films begining towards the end of 2003.
