Presidents Report 2007/8

A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

Before we move on I guess we should reflect on the pre-season and the Neil Hadley Memorial Day. A great day remembering a great man and with teams from Stourport, Chaddesley and of course ourselves the scene was set for some entertaining rugby and a promising evening. Well we weren’t disappointed. Warley graciously allowed Chaddesley the benefit of the home advantage as they lifted the Memorial Trophy but we look forward to taking the Cappa Cup proper when we meet Chaddesley again at Tat Bank this coming season. Many thanks to everyone for their tremendous show of generosity. The funds raised on the day will be shared between Karen’s two nominated charities and Neil’s two children.

And so to 06/07 and a season of two halves if ever there was one. An iffy start was turned around in the new year with a final league position which I thought didn’t truly reflect our improving performance. Bob and Dave have done an excellent job in coaching, training numbers are up, new faces in both squads and as always that great Warley spirit. The youth section go from strength to strength and now we are starting to see the fruits of our labours as two awards at this years dinner and dance went to home grown talent.

And talking of youth we have had two new additions to the Warley family courtesy of Sketty and Nick Bright (with a little help from their partners). Well done lads and lasses – it must be something in the beer!

And at the other end of the scale we have seen two of our older hands tying the matrimonial knot Nigel Bellmore and Bernie Noakes.

My thanks to Karen Potter for her hard work and dedication over the years and welcome to Sharon Maynard as she takes up her position of Welfare Officer.

Well done to Nick and Derek for their leadership during last season it’s good to see them maintaining continuity in their respective roles in the season to come. And thanks also to Don Poole and Roger Jackson for keeping a tight reign on the dosh.

In recent months we have rekindled our links with Kev Parry’s Warley ABC by supporting their events and sponsoring a number of bouts. I would personally like to see this bond strengthened – it makes sense Warley Rugby – Warley Boxing. So look out for future events and let’s give them our support.

And so as I enter my 5th year as President I would like to say a sincere thank you to everyone who has done their bit for this great club over the last 12 months, players, officers and supporters alike. Now that our 25 year lease has finally been ratified we can look forward to attracting other paying user groups and offering long term sponsorship deals. We have probably the best facilities in the area and a clubhouse we should all be proud to bring our guests to.

Good luck to you all, enjoy your rugby, enjoy your club!
BARRIE DAVIES

Warley RFC Presidents day 2007

Presidents Day 6th May 2007
Photos now available. See Photos page.

Well if you were there and an awful lot of you were, you will have seen just what an excellent day Presidents day turned out to be. Just look at the photos on the photo page. The whole day ran like clockwork but that is usually a cunning piece of deception. A considerable amount of work goes into the planning and prep of such an occasion which starts way back with some arm twisting by Ian Morrell to raise both a vets team and some opposition, they do need some cajoling. Weigh in the President with some conniving to raise his side. A similar amount of pleasure and pain by Spencer, Steve and Mark in the youth section. Then the referees organised by Steve Tooth, with some very stylish professional shirts.

But what a result; Three youth games, One Vets game and of course the main event, the first XV against the Presidents XV. That’s just the sport.
Then there is the stuff nobody wants to hear about, the blood, sweat and tears (literally) in marking pitches, building temporary bars, building Barbie’s, setting up tents, turning tents into real ale bars, buying extra pumps that you find don’t work the night before and wondering how you are going to get rid of all that strange green beer. Staffing, sleepless nights, the mantra “I love my club”. As the list is recounted just one more time, Bang it has arrived. Well the youth games, the vet’s game and the main event came and went. A fantastic effort for a club apparently having a bad season. The food and all the green beer came and went. In fact all the real ale went, plus most of the Guinness. From top to bottom, a real team effort, on and off the field. A special thanks always has to go to Nick and his bar staff that toiled long and hard. Members of the youth section who spent long hours with litter pickers. The Andersons (all four of them) who remained hidden amongst the smoke at the Barbie, (Boy that’s a lot of smoke). Every player who was moved, willingly or not, to don a pair of rugby boots. And of course every one who turned up to make this a very excellent noisy, bleary, singing and bar diving occasion. Once again, fantastic work by all concerned, can’t wait for next year. Wonder what colour the beer will be?
