WARLEY HIT HEADLINES WITH THE RFU
the following is taken from the RFU website under community rugby;

Warley get Seal of Approval
11 November 2005 -

Midlands Five West (North) club Warley have become the latest Midlands club to be awarded the prestigious RFU Seal of Approval.
Warley are one of only two rugby clubs in the football-dominated borough of Sandwell but they have done much to promote rugby in their part of the Black Country. They have linked up with Wednesbury, the other rugby club in the borough, to set up the Sandwell Rugby Development Group which has helped to introduce rugby to over 50 primary schools in Sandwell. The next phase of the project is to go into the borough's secondary schools.
After several years using council-owned pitches, Warley have now developed their own ground at a former works sports complex in Oldbury and set up their youth section only two years ago.
Warley started with 20 youngsters and have now expanded their youth section to 85 registered players which allows them to run sides at Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 levels.
Warley achieved their Seal of Approval in just a year and were presented with the award by Alan Hubbleday, the Stourbridge and former Pertemps Bees hooker, who works as an RFU Rugby Development Officer for North Midlands.
The award is a major landmark for the club and recognises the hard work that has gone into the continued development of a community-based rugby club.
The RFU Community Rugby Active Sports Seal of Approval and the Sport England Clubmark accreditation scheme are based upon a three-year award system in which a club will be assessed on its ability to provide a safe, effective, child-friendly club environment.

Outside Agencies
Sandwell MBC Regeneration Department have been excellent supporters and we have secured £25,000 in funds to renovate the club and secure the site. So far the roof has been recovered, the toilets refurbished, the changing rooms repainted and a new play frame installed. About to start is the installation of secure fencing to seal off unwanted access to the site, training floodlights to improve use of the whole site and the installation of disabled access to the front of the club. This money was secured as an active promoter of community use and to help us bring the club up to Seal of Approval standards.

School Links
Our activities and links to schools have been greatly assisted by Sandwell Sport & Leisure Trust. In particular Jamie Elliot has been a great advocate of the club and raised our profile and standing within Sandwell to new levels, he has also helped us with child protection and getting our procedures in order.
Black Country Sports brilliant supporters and together we are putting a bid to the town teams of Sandwell to fund a community rugby coach. Whether this will lead to one fulltime person or a number of part time posts is yet to be sorted fully but this promises to be a great boon to our youth work.

Schools Partnership Development are a new group in the area, based at Warley High School. We are in discussion with them over supplying after school coaching and an exit route for children who want to play rugby. Currently the school struggles to find opposition in Sandwell and we are short of older children. Thus we hope to assist each other in developing the children’s skills and building up our numbers. There is also the possibility of access to a minibus. This would help us maintain free access to play rugby at our club.

Other Club Links
Moseley RFC has been a great fund of information and support. We are hoping to improve our links.
Wednesbury RFC are part of the community rugby coach plan and we are working together on other angles to further improve both our youth set ups. We are also developing links with a view to a development group.
The Dudley Youth Rugby Development committee have been a great help with the community rugby officer.
North Mids Youth Development Committee have given me guidance and great contacts.

Seal of Approval
We have a committee structure established and a highly active welfare officer. We have pulled much of the structure together that we will need to achieve the seal of approval. Unfortunately due to Gary Meechan (RDO) having to cover 2 positions and subsequently leaving for the national academy at Worcester our ambition on getting Seal of Approval has been stalled. Now we have two new RDO's we plan to proceed asap. I have established contact with Alan Hubbleday and we are meeting soon to restart the process.
You can see that it is all go and we are far from relaxing on any front. The seal of approval is crucial if we are to grow and we are determined to achieve it.

RFF Grant
We have been successful in obtaining a RUGBY FOOTBALL FOUNDATION grant for the second year running. This years grant of £4,700, matched by internal and sponsorship funding, has given us an additional boost to our committment to improving the playing surfaces and promoting the playing of Rugby at Senior and Junior levels. Last years grant saw the purchase of ground maintenance and line marking equipment and was granted on condition that the club was seen to be working towards obtaining the RFU Seal of Approval. We in turn have kept our part and are a good way down the line to obtain just that. This years grant is conditional in that we actually obtain the RFU seal of approval. I remain confident that we are in touching distance of doing just that. once again it has involved a lot of work behind the scenes and we may well have achieved the Seal of Approval just after Christmas or early new year. This years grant will see further improvements to our maintenance and storage facilities.

We need volunteers who will see through their commitment to Warley RFC. There are lots of ways to help, not all will need a lot of your time. Above is just a part of what we are up to, if you want to be part of it, shout !
