Bingley Old People’s Welfare Group
 | Bingley Old People’s Welfare Group is looking for new members to help its club grow.
For about 20 years now the group has been meeting in the town to help give senior citizens the chance to enjoy an active social life.
They meet every Tuesday afternoon at Cardigan House in Fernicliffe Road, for a chat, games and other entertainment that’s put on.
Membership for the year is £1 and members pay 50p at each session which includes a cup of tea and biscuit.
In August the club had a bring and buy sale to help raise funds for the group’s social activities.
Pensioner Joan Lewis recently took over the reins of the group and has been putting posters up all over town to try and recruit new members.
Joan says: “I’m a young pensioner and I was bored. I wanted to get involved in something that I could get my teeth in to, something that would help others
“It’s a shame to think that there might be some elderly people out there who are at home by themselves because they haven’t heard about the fun we’re having.
“Anyone over 60 will be more than welcome at our meetings - the more the merrier. We’re a good friendly crowd.
“After the last lady who organised the group died, numbers dwindled a but so I’m really trying to build it up again.
“Of course the more members we have, the more entertainment we can afford.
“Acts can be very expensive - even if they only charge expenses. I wonder if there’s any local talent around in the Bingley area, any groups or individuals who would like to come along and put on a turn for us for free? They’d be doing something very worthwhile and very much appreciated.”
Anyone interested in entertaining the group can contact the group’s chairman Jeffrey Waterhouse on (01274) 564544. People wanting to join the welfare group as a member can just turn up at the meetings. |
