Cinema Treasures, which has led the drive to preserve and promote historic movie palaces around the world, has announced that its online database has now grown to include over 1000 theaters.

Debuting in December 2000 with just over 100 listings, moviegoers around the world have helped multiply the Cinema Treasures database by more than ten-fold. In that time, the organization’s listings have expanded to include theaters from all 50 states and from 8 different countries, including Canada, England, Australia, Malaysia, and others.

“Reaching this landmark in less than a year since our launch is a testament to the power and allure of these grandiose cinemas,” remarked Co-Founder, Ross Melnick. “It is also further proof of the tireless support and devotion of our users and volunteers—we couldn’t have done it without them.”

Co-Founder Patrick Crowley added, “We’ve been honored to serve exhibition veterans, current exhibitors, and movie theater enthusiasts in their insatiable desire to document, promote, and save these important cultural treasures.”

The organization has also partnered with the Australian Cinema and Theatre Society (ACTS) to preserve Australia’s classic movie palaces. Forging a strategic marketing partnership with ACTS has enabled Cinema Treasures to reach out to Australian movie theater enthusiasts and helped ACTS and its quarterly magazine, Kino Cinema Quarterly, to find a new audience in the United States.

Cinema Treasures is also rapidly becoming a repository for new and old photographs of historic movie palaces. When it launched, the Cinema Treasures website contained roughly 25 images, but, today, that number has ballooned to over 500. Photographs have continued to pour in from all over the world and will now live on as a permanent digital record of the history of motion picture exhibition. Many of the images on the site are exclusive to Cinema Treasures and document rarely seen or rarely photographed theaters.

In addition to celebrating its 1000TH theater, Cinema Treasures has also unveiled its new virtual tour section which will enable visitors to view classic movie theaters in an immersive, 360-degree photographic setting, using technology from Apple and iPIX.

“As we look forward to adding our next 1000 theaters, there seems to be no end in sight,” said Crowley. “While many of the world’s movie houses have been closed, repurposed, or demolished, their structures have remained as living proof of cinema’s rich architectural heritage.”

“Who knows how many historic movie houses are out there if you look in every city and town across the United States and overseas?” added Melnick. “As our site continues to grow, it is becoming clear that our quest to document and save the world’s historic movie theaters has just begun.”
