Reading for Enjoyment
Enjoyment takes many forms, ranging from a good weep to a hearty laugh, and this class aims to satisfy both extremes at different times. It could be renamed Tutor's Choice, since it consists of passages from over a hundred (so far) novels, biographies, poems and plays which are read to members in order to give pleasure and provoke discussion - but this title is too much of a tongue-twister. Materials range from Francesca Simon's 'Horrid Henry' to Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Travels with a Donkey' and from the cartoon version of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth' to the audio-tape of Alan Bennett's 'History Boys'. Short stories, often taped, are heard, the authors ranging from Anton Chekhov to Dylan Thomas. Poets from Simon Armitage to W.B.Yeats have also been read. At present, the course is in its eleventh year with a number of members enjoying it from the beginning.
