Edinburgh revisited
| Anyone who has not visited Scotlands capital city for a few years cannot help but be struck by the symbolism of the new parliament building. This light, airy and futuristic new structure stands in an ocean of calm at the bottom of the Royal Mile, directly opposite the ancient Holyrood Palace and gardens and looking out over Arthur's Seat (shown in the picture). Meanwhile, Scotland is pushing ahead with new rail and tramways, one of which will run down Princes Street and connect with the airport. | |

Treasures of the NE
| Although only a relatively short drive from our U3A base, the NE is often overlooked as an area of interest. This ought not to be the case as it has much to offer. For instance, Middlesborough has recently received lottery funding for a magnificent new art gallery (MIMA) set in a prime position on one side of the landscaped Civic Precinct - as shown in the pictures. Hartlepool's Historic Quay has been carefully preserved and has the Trincomalee, the oldest surviving fighting ship in the world. Addidionally, the area, perhaps better known for its industrial past, has some fine countryside. | |

Buxton & the Peak District National Park
What has become a regular visit to the Buxton G&S Festival (now in its 15th year) by some members of the Music Appreciation group, was broadened to include visits within the Peaks. This area of the country contains some beautiful countryside, fascinating caves and ancient attractions such as the Heights of Abraham - named when originally developed after the site of the battle for Quebec.
This year the weather was better than we have come to expect affording some fine, long distance views. As for the performances, by both professional and amateur groups at Buxton's splendid Opera House, they seem to improve year on year.

A glimpse of Norway from the Saga Rose
 | Some members from the Music Class cruised to Norway for a holiday which included a visit to the home of Edvard Grieg at Troldhaugen and the hut where he spent many hours composing. The trip also included some of the majestic fjords for which Norway is famous. |

Around Belfast in Autumn
| In October a group of members visited Belfast for a short break-a busy City and a hub of activity. There are many interesting sites to visit including Stormont, home of the Northen Ireland Assembly and the famous Giant's Causeway. | |

Kings Place London
| This is London's newest music venue which also incorporates galleries for art and sculpture and currently a display of artifacts in solid silver with prices to match. The main hall (shown in the photograph) is a 450 seater ultra modern chamber concert hall set below ground level with excellent accoustics and surrounded by circulation and display areas. At ground level and above are offices and restaurants, the building being bordered by the Regent's Canal and the Battlebridge Basin. Being only 150 metres behind King's Cross Station there are hopes that the new facilities will help in the regeneration of this part of N. London. Well worth a visit. | |
