A Public School in Manningham ??????
The building the club was housed in was constructed as a minor public school in 1867. Known as The Clarendon Academy it was built in what was then considered a somewhat upmarket part of the city. These days the area is only upmarket in that it is just up the lane from John Street Market. The headmaster was a John Barr who later became the secretary to the governor of British Columbia. He ended his days in a home for the inebriates & was found dead in the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. |
