Curly Hill Scout Activity Centre and Campsite, Ilkley, W.Yorks.
Available for use by members of the Scout & Guide Movements and other youth organisations and schools
The Camp-site and Activity centre is located in the picturesque Wharfe valley, overlooking the town of Ilkley, with superb views of the world famous ‘ILKLA MOOR’. The site occupies approximately 4 acres of moor/woodland and contains a modern indoor activity centre along with a brand new bunkhouse annexe containing 32 beds in four bedrooms (bunk beds) & a separate bedroom for a disabled youngster and his/her carer.
The Centre.
Contains bedroom accommodation for up to eight adult leaders. Leaders sleep on bunk beds (4 per room) and the youngsters in the bunkhouse annexe. The multipurpose hall serves as a dining room and play/work area. The centre contains a fully equipped kitchen, with a fridge and a freezer, eight burner cooker and double oven, along with a walk in larder with plenty of shelving. Eating equipment, cooking pans etc. are provided. We advise groups to bring their own cooking utensils, knives etc., to their own choice. There are also male & female toilets, washing and shower facilities, and a drying room. The Centre is well provided with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors/fire alarm which have been installed for your safety. All rooms are centrally heated, hot water being provided by a high capacity gas boiler.
Disabled visitors, particularly wheelchair users, will find all doors easily negotiable and light switches at a convenient height. Access to the centre is by a suitable ramp.In 2006 we added UPVC windows to the centre along with electrically operated security shutters. We stress the centre has been designed by experienced leaders with fun in mind. The total area of the centre is 4200 sq.feet of which 1500 sq.feet is available for eating or playing & 1200 sq.feet for bedrooms. The rules of the centre are simply - leave the centre as you would wish to find it. A duty warden is on call for your stay - but not necessarily on site - we like you to feel ‘free’ to enjoy your stay. The centre has a pay telephone. You are advised to book well in advance.
The Camp-site.
A haven of adventure and fun for all ages, without the ‘organised’ facilities of many camp-sites. It is a DIY Camp-site with trees to climb, swing from or build runways, bracken to build the odd ‘bivvy’ to hide in. See our pheasants, rabbits and varied wildlife throughout the season. Altar fires are on each site for wood fires, with ‘real’ wood available supplemented by pallets. The sites cater for a patrol or a troop. We aim to limit the total use of the camp-site so that individual sites can feel self-contained, yet uncrowded, maintaining that feeling of freedom of the open air. Curly Hill is within a short walk of the River Wharfe, indoor/outdoor swimming pool and the facilities of Ilkley and public transport links to the surrounding area. Patrol camps are encouraged and our experienced trained Wardens can be on hand to help if required. The camp-site has a camp fire circle, which doubles for that quiet period of reflection and thanks to God. Simple rules govern the site; No axes allowed in the wood owned by Bradford Metropolitan Council. No grease pits or fire areas to be dug. Leave the site as you would wish to find it. The outdoor toilet/shower block was completely re-furbished in 1998/99, providing hot and cold washing and shower facilities, for campers. Come and visit us, we are sure you will agree Curly Hill is a great place to bring youngsters. |
