1 in 6 couples now suffer from problems in conceiving children.

One of the key problems surrounding this issue is that the amount of information that is available is not easy to find unless you know where to look.

84% of couples will conceive within a year if they do not use contraception and have regular sexual intercourse. This figure rises to 92% after two years.

Infertility is defined as failure to conceive after regular unprotected sexual intercourse for 2 years. (National Institute Clinical Excellence 2003)

This website is an excellent resource for gaining basic information and email addresses for all the clinics that provide both private and NHS funded treatment (fee paying or local authority funded treatment).

PREPARE FOR THE LONG HAUL!!

If you have been trying for children for some time now and are worried that you may have infertility problems and are thinking of going to the doctors. PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE LONG HAUL!

When you first decide to go to the doctors both you and your partner will need to make an appointment to be 'checked out'. This is often a difficult time emotionally because you are beginning to face up to the fact that you may have a problem. Your family and friends may know that you have been trying for a baby for some time and you may find yourself having to explain your predicament to them. This again may prove difficult and you will have all kinds of questions, for example:

what if I have the problem?

what if it is my partners problem?

how will I react?

what if nothing is found to be wrong?

There are many different tests involved for couples experiencing infertility. The nature of these tests will depend upon where you are in the process, whether it is you or your partner that has the problem, and the type of treatment that you are planning to have.

These tests could involve:

For Him; blood tests, sperm analysis.

For Her; blood tests, laparoscopys, smears, scans.

A post coital test has also been used at some clinics in the past and may still be required.

It often seems that these tests can be endless and you may ask yourself why do they need to be repeated again and again.

The results of these tests can prove highly emotional as you may feel you have failed in you manhood or womanhood. If your partner has the problem then they may feel a a failure and question your commitment to them. If you have the problem then you may feel that your partner doesn't understand the emotional pressure that you feel under being unable to provide them with a child.

The simple answer to all of these issues is that there is no simple answer unfortunately. The only advice that should really be offered is COMMUNICATE with your partner. Share your fears and feelings with them. LISTEN to their needs and concerns.

The journey is a long and hard one and at the end it is likely that your relationship will be stronger or possibly in tatters!!!
