Pudsey Royal FC
Pudsey Royal certainly had a season to remember last year. But after promising so much, a big fixture backlog eventually resulted in them finishing without a trophy. They literally had to play half their season in April and May and it took its toll. Royal did particularly well to reach the quarter-finals of the West Riding Sunday County Cup. They also made the semi-finals of the Leeds and District Cup. For a side outside the premier division to perform so well in the cups was impressive but it handicapped league progress. They were left needing to win almost all their outstanding games to clinch a spot in the top flight. The task proved too much for their squad. Royal eventually finished five points behind second-place Wrose Bull. It was a disappointing end for a team who contributed so much during the season. Royal entered the Alliance in the 1995-96 and they gained promotion at the first attempt. They finished second behind Windmill FC who took the division 2A title on goal difference. Royal were third for two successive seasons and then fifth before gaining their second promotion. They finished runners-up to Eccleshill United after some careful team strengthening in division 1A. While Eccleshill had a first dismal season and folded in late April, Pudsey came near to clinching promotion in their debut season. Royal hope to be among the promotion contenders this season. They have a big squad and with the pull of being situated between Bradford and Leeds can attract players from the Leeds leagues who fancy a go in the Alliance. |
