The Revi Wreck Rescue.
On 13th February 1979, the Panamanian registered cargo ship The Revi, sent out a distress signal 30 miles North East of the Spurn point lightship, gigantic seas has ripped away her hatch covers & the ship was sinking. The City Of Bradford IV slipped her moorings & headed out into the North sea. An hour later, The Revi sent out another more urgent distress signal stating that the ship was in imminent danger of sinking in the 40ft waves. The lifeboat had it's first sighting of the sinking ship at 1:30am.At the first attempt to try get alongside, a huge wave caused the Revi to rise above the lifeboat, the coxswain Brian Bevan skillfully manouvered the lifeboat full astern just in time as the Revi fell back down again, missing the lifeboat by inches, again & again Brian Bevan took his lifeboat alongside the massive ship until he & his crew got close enough to drag the stricken sailors to safety. This task was not accomplished easily, as the rise & fall of the waves was reaching over 30feet, therefore, one moment the lifeboat was 30feet above the Revi & vice-versa. With only the Captain of the Revi remaining aboard, the ship took on a 45deg list to one side, the Captain ran to the stern of the ship ready to jump, 9 times the lifeboat got close but not close enough, on the 10th attempt, the Captain jumped onto the deck of the lifeboat & was grabbed by the strong arms of the lifeboat crew. A few moments later, The Revi rolled over & sank. Coxswain Brian Bevan was awarded the R.N.L.I gold medal & each of his crew members received the bronze medal for their gallantry. |
