[Image Courtesy of John Cameron Ward]

Ancestor of John Cameron Ward

JAMES ARCHER
Curate of Royton 1774-1778
Curate and Schoolmaster of Middleton 1778-1829
Rector of Middleton 1829-1832

Agnes Archer, his daughter, married in Middleton in 1797, to Theophilus Wyatt SMITH

About James Archer, John C.Ward writes......
he was curate and schoolmaster of Middleton for over 50 years and finally made rector when he was over 80: a well-loved character from some accounts.....
His birth was traced to Dent.....the church to which he was first appointed & where his baptismal certificate was found. His father was Thomas Archer, "The Prince of Rural Tailors" mentioned by Prof Adam Sedgwick in his Dent memoir.

Descendents of John Smith & Mary Wyatt
Gratefully received from John are reports' files which include data relating to the family and descendents of John SMITH & Mary WYATT. He considered that these are the most interesting Smiths he has in his database and that they connect remotely with Jeffrey Wyatville, architect, who redesigned Windsor Castle for George IV.

Theophilus Smith married Agnes Archer
One of the sons of John Smith and Mary Wyatt was Theophilus Wyatt SMITH who married Agnes ARCHER in Middleton in 1797. Agnes was the daughter of James Archer, the Curate of Middleton at that time (pictured above).

The children of Theophilus and Agnes are summarised in the Table below. Their family home was Middleton Hall.

  ? north-west-england connections   Location: Alberta,Canada
      Submitted Dec 2005/updated March 2006
My great grandmother was Grace Smith - Scottish, born November 14, 1869.
Grace lived in Ontario in the 1800's. She was possibly a school teacher. There is a U.S.A. connection to her but my family history is so vague - just one reference to it.
Her husband was Thomas James Watson - Irish, born November 27 1859. I haven't found a marriage record for them in Ontario.
There could be Lancashire or other north-west England connections.
Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated.
[nb: other great greatgrandmother was Catherine (nee Craig) Scales - scotish born 1861, and her husband was George Scales - English born 1852. In the late 1800's, the Watson's lived at Gordon Lake, Ontario, and the Scales lived at Londsborough, Ontario. Hope this helps other researchers. Celia]
