I was born in Preston & my mother was Alice SMITH, 1910 - 1988. |
| |
Alice married Gabriel Duncan Higginson in 1931. |
| |
(Wedding Photograph is shown below this Summary) |
| |
| |
Her father, Thomas William SMITH, 1875 - 1947 |
| |
(also pictured in the photograph) |
| |
married Edith HOLT, born West Riding Yorkshire. |
| |
| |
They had fourteen children, seven of whom survived to adulthood :- |
| |
Hannah, Ernest, Edith, Ethel, Elsie, Alice, & Thomas. |
| |
There are three surviving male SMITH grandchildren from this family - Gordon, Brian & Ian. |
| |
Thomas William SMITH's father was Joseph Bellas SMITH, 1837 - 1908. |
| |
Joseph Bellas was variously a shopkeeper / coal merchant. |
| |
He married Hannah Leeming(born Preston) |
| |
Their eight children were:- |
| |
Mary, Jane, Joseph, Elizabeth Ellen, Hannah, Thomas William, Fanny, & John Henry. |
| |
Their mother, Hannah, died in 1882, when the youngest child was only two. |
| |
| |
Joseph Bellas SMITH's father was Henry SMITH, born about 1803. |
| |
Henry was a spinner and married Mary Bellas at St. John's, Preston. |
| |
Their known children were Thomas and Joseph Bellas, and at Joseph Bellas's baptism they lived in Ribbleton Lane. |
| |
| |
In 1841, Henry's wife, Mary Bellas, and their two children were living in Newton Street at her sister's house, but I cannot find Henry on the census. |
| |
In 1851 I can find a Henry Smith, Widower, together with sons Thomas and Joseph, whose ages fit with all my other information, but the census says that the sons were born Wigan, and that is confusing. |
| |
| |
So, I'm now looking for the birth and death of Henry Smith and his wife Mary, and for the parents of Henry. |
| |

John Evander Smith born either 1798 or 1800 according to US census. |
| |
| |
From the Smith family bible written by John Smith:
| |
| |
"The Isle of Man is the place of my nativity - |
| |
The town of Douglas the principal city, location in the Irish Sea.
| |
I left my family in Haven, England at which place I was bound
an apprentice to Anthony Smith, a sea captain in the year 1810.
| |
He was Commander of an English vessel called the 'Friendship' -
came to the United States in October 1819 - Landed in New York City."
| |
| |
This is all the information I have. |
| |
When researching this before I was told that Smith was not a
common name in the Isle of Man and that having a middle name
was also uncommon.
| |
John became a riverboat pilot and Captain in the US. |
| |
His wife's name was Narcissus Johnson.
They lived in Tennessee and Kentucky |

57-JBS : Additional Notes
The parents of Theophilus Wyatt Smith John Smith of Packington in Derbyshire and Leicestershire & Mary Wyatt of Seaney Park, Staffordshire
John Smith - Born before 1748, place unknown. Married 1769 at Burton-on-Trent to Mary Wyatt. Died 1820. Burial - Packington (near Ashby de la Zouch)
Wyatts of Seaney Park, Burton-in-Trent Theophilus Wyatt Smith, as noted in the summary above, was born in 1771 at Seaney Park, or Sinai Park as it has also been known, in Branston, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. This was the residence of his mother's family, the Wyatts. (See Footnote).
John Smith & Mary Wyatt, as far as known, had 10 other children, all born in either Burton on Trent or Packington, Derbyshire (their house and grounds straddled the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border).
Younger sibling John died in Liverpool It appears that Theophilus Wyatt Smith, a Land Agent, may not have been the only sibling to move to Lancashire. His younger brother John Smith died in Liverpool, and so, though no additional information has so far been traced, it is likely that John had also lived and worked in Lancashire. _________________________________________________________

.
Footnote Some historical information of interest, transcribed from The Victoria History of Staffordshire, relating to the Wyatts and Seaney/Sinai Park, is published on the British History Website. |
