If you ever find yourself in Ilkley you can be assured of an enthusiastic welcome at St. Margaret’s church; well known as a warm and vibrant centre of worship.
Do please come and see our historic church and rejoice in its rich decoration or, better still, join us at one of our services. We'd love to see you, and if you mention you've not been before, we'll do our best to make sure you feel welcome!
The church remains open during daytime for quiet reflection and prayer. So do come on in, look around and absorb the very special calm and prayerful atmosphere here.
St. Margaret’s has a loyal and mixed attendance - people not only from within the parish but from far afield too - because they enjoy the worship, the music, the message and the fellowship of our congregation. Our spirit of welcome and inclusion comes directly from our own experience of the welcoming good news of the Christian faith and we can safely say that those who come find spiritual satisfaction here.
Worship at St. Margaret’s is conducted in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. Why not come and experience the excitement and devotion of one of our services. We celebrate Mass twice on Sunday and usually every day during the week. Morning and evening prayer are also said daily. Confessions can be readily arranged.
But it is not just traditional worship we provide. Children are made particularly welcome. Our informal half-hour Sunday Family Service at 9.30 am is filled with children together with their parents, the latter understanding the importance of bringing to their children a knowledge of God, who created a world of glorious wonder and diversity that they will one day inherit and in which they will have to live in harmony as brothers and sisters. A simple liturgy is used, with a short presentation or address, and a mixture of traditional hymns and modern worship songs. Children are encouraged to participate as servers, and contribute to the music group and lesson readers. A play area is provided near the front. Once a month (normally on the third Sunday), the service includes Holy Communion. The Family Service is very popular with parents and youngsters alike and continues to grow in importance. Refreshments are offered after the service, enabling parents and children to mingle and to get to know one another.
As the children grow older they join with their parents at the 10.30 am Solemn Eucharist at which we have a team of Sunday School teachers operating to a rota.. The teachers take the children out of the church to the hall at the reading of the epistle and return at the Agnus Dei, in time for them to go up to the altar for a blessing. The teachers use the Living Stones series and they usually focus on the gospel of the day but concentrate on saints' days or other matters when appropriate. The children seem to enjoy our different approaches and talents and learn something of our faith from their lessons and from their regular attendance at worship.
We not only come together at times of celebration and festivity but we eat together and play together in continued friendship. In short, we share our lives’ journeys together. Through this way of life, our sense of brotherhood is strengthened and we experience a profound feeling of Christ’s presence among us.
That may sound boring and stuffy but at St. Margaret’s we do have many parties and social events and we are really quite the friendliest crowd! Why not come and join us and find out the easy way! Or come to one of the many musical events or talks that take place in St Margaret's.
We also have a group for parents and toddlers that meets in the Church Hall on Fridays. The Mothers' Union offers a warm welcome to its monthly meetings. We take an active ecumenical part in “Churches together in Ilkley”
We hope our website will help you to become a part of our church family and make St. Margaret’s your spiritual home. You'll be glad that you came, and we'll be pleased to have welcomed you.
