Wharfedale & District Sunday Cup Final

Thursday 13th April 2006
Baildon Trinity Athletic v Rawdon A.F.C

Asa Dobson, Steven Barnett, Michael Malyon, Graham Carney(Capt), Harry Bates, Danny Milner, Ian Firth, Dominic Bartle, Kim Brown, Iain Webb, Joe Bates
The game started scrappy and continued in the same vain throughout, probably as a result of Trinity having played a League match the night before. Baildon never really got their passing game going and, to be fair Rawdon are a good side (indeed they have won this trophy two years running) It was Rawdon who had the first attempt on goal but caused little trouble to the Baildon back line. Dobson was called into action just once in the first forty five when he tipped a cross-shot away which went out for a throw on the far side. In contrast Trinity caused a few heart-stopping moments in the opposition ranks. From a set piece, which seemed Trinity’s best hope of scoring a goal, Firth thundered a header wide of the left hand upright.
Baildon did have the ball in the net when Bartle floated a free kick to the far edge of the box, Milner steamed in and powered a header past the ’keepers right hand dive and into the bottom corner. As the Baildon team and followers celebrated, the referee consulted his linesman who had raised his flag for offside against a Baildon player following up. Was he interfering with play under the new rules? The officials thought so and the strike was ruled out. Later in the half, Trinity created another chance when Webb chipped the ‘keeper but sadly it went over for a goal-kick. From a quickly taken throw-in Malyon found Firth who laid the ball back to Bartle. The midfielder spotted Joe Bates down the left and chipped one over the top for him to run onto. Bates left one defender in his wake but another charged across and challenged sending the winger sprawling on the edge of the box. The debate amongst the supporters was is it a penalty or a free-kick on the edge but to everyone’s surprise the officials gave nothing and the game went on.

Half time: Baildon Trinity Athletic 0 Rawdon A.F.C 0

The second half was a disappointment for Baildon as they never really troubled the Rawdon defence. In fact the more the game wore on the more exhausted the lads looked. Manager Barlow tried to freshen things up when he took Joe Bates off and brought on Danny Steele and a little later replaced Brown with Michael Haran. Mickey, playing his first game since injury wasn’t fully fit and in frustration got himself booked for dissent. Webb also saw yellow for a challenge on the ‘keeper. The highlight of the second half was a superb save from Dobson when he dived full length to his left and tipped a shot away for a corner. Rawdon broke the deadlock midway through the half when a defence splitting pass put a forward through who skilfully dinked the ball over the advancing Dobson and into the net. As much as Baildon tried, they never really threatened and Rawdon A.F.C completed the hat-trick of Sunday Cup victories. One consolation for Trinity, Graham Carney was awarded the Man of the Match trophy.

Wharfedale & District Challenge Cup Final

Monday 1st May 2006 @ Nethermoor Park (Home of Guiseley AFC)

Baildon Trinity Athletic v Guiseley A.F.C.

Matthew Aveyard, Harry Bates, Asa Dobson, Graham Carney (Capt.), Oliver Spence, Danny Milner, Richard Harris, David Armstrong, Dominic Bartle, Michael Haran, John North

Subs: Andrew Radosevic (for North) Michael Malyon (for Dobson) Danny Steele (for Armstrong)

Tweny Four hours after losing the Wharfedale Sunday League senior Cup Final with Angel FC, Aveyard (Mini) and Radosevic (Dozza) returned to Guiseley with their Trinity team mates to try and make it third time lucky for the Town of Baildon. Trinity, attacking the goal that they ‘scored’ in against Rawdon in the previous Final (which was adjudged to have been offside) started brightly and indeed scored the first goal of the game after 6 mins. North fired in a free-kick from just outside the penalty area on the right which the Guiseley ‘keeper flapped at and allowed it through his grasp and into the net. Mini did some juggling of his own in a similar position soon after but managed to keep the effort out. Baildon again had the ball in the net when Bartle ran on to a through ball and slotted the ball home but to the disgust of the Baildon contingent, the flag went up for offside.

Guiseley drew level late in the half when a disputed free-kick on the edge of the box found its’ way through the defensive wall and, after taking a nick of Carneys’ boot continued past Minis right hand dive and into the corner of the net. Despite having a lot of possession Guiseley never threatened the Baildon defence and with Trinity playing Haran as a lone striker, Baildon didn’t really threaten Guiseley.

The second half was largely uneventful. Both teams huffed and puffed but without making any headway against the opposition defence. Dozza came on to replace North on the left wing and Malyon replaced the injured Dobson at left full back who’s departing shot was to receive a yellow card. Harris and Armstrong also saw yellow. For his last throw of the dice, Neil Barlow sent on Steele to partner Haran up front and withdrew the holding midfield player Armstrong. The fresh legs put new impetus into the Trinity side but the game remained deadlocked.

Baildon were the better side in the first period of extra time and again had the ball in the net through Mickey Haran only to see the linesman raise the flag for offside. Four times Trinity scored in that goal in the two Finals but only one was registered. Baildon seem to enjoy attacking that goal and to prove the point they produced the best move either side had managed in two hours of Football. Dozza picked up the ball in midfield and passed it right to Milner and set off on a forward run. Milner picked out Haran on the left wing with a superb pass and Mickey, seeing Dozzas’ run, expertly floated a terrific out swinging ball in to the box which Dozza rose and met with his head. Sadly the ball flew just wide of the post. The second period of extra time passed without any danger to either side and the game was to be decided on the lottery of a penalty shoot out.

If the penalties were to be taken at our favourite end the perhaps the result might have been different. Dozza stepped up and saw his spot kick saved. Guiseley scored their first, both Steele and Haran netted for Trinity but Guiseley notched three out of three. Malyon stepped up but hit the cross bar. Guiseley scored their fourth and game set and match.

Baildon Trinity Athletic v Kippax Welfare

Aveyard

Bates (H), Carney, Dobson

Barlow
Haran, Milner, Bartle, Steele

Harris, Halliday.

Trinity kicked off the new season in style with a crushing 5-0 victory over visitors Kippax welfare. Manager Neil Barlow opted to play a new system this season with himself in a holding mid-field and, though not quite up to Owen Hargreaves standards, did a very good job. Asa Dobson opened the scoring and further goals from Danny Milner and Scott Halliday gave Baildon a comfortable 3-0 half time lead.

Kippax came out stronger in the second half and should have scored on a couple of occasions seeing one chance headed of the line and another cleared to safety. Mini in goal had been a virtual spectator in the first 45 but was now being called into action but stood firm. Richard Harris and Halliday were a threat on the break and with Micky Haran and Danny Steele on the flanks Kippax had to be on their guard. Captain Graham Carney was again outstanding in defence despite suffering from a heavy cold and Harry Bates worked tirelessly in defence. With Barlow in the holding role it gave freedom for Milner and Dominic Bartle to get forward at every opportunity.

With a quarter of an hour remaining and Harris tiring, Andrew Radosevic (Dozza) was brought on to partner the hard working Halliday, and it was Dozza who killed the game off. Three times he ran clear of the visitors defence timing his runs perfectly to beat the off-side trap and added two more goals, putting the 3rd over the bar.

With no new signings from last year and two departed (Dave Armstrong hasn’t re-signed and Oliver Spence signed for Otley in Div1), John North out injured with a broken collar bone and Danny Morton unlikely to return then the squad could be stretched this season. This was a great start by the lads so let’s see what happens in the coming months.

Final score: Trinity 5 Kippax 0

District Cup Round 1

15th October 2006
Wharfedale District Cup Round 1

Trinity v Ventus United

Baildon set off on the cup road that led to a Final appearance last season with a resounding 7-1 home win against below par opposition. A brace of early goals from Michael Haran and a strike from Danny Steele put the home side 3-0 up inside the first twenty minutes and they never looked back. Trinity coasted through the rest of the half and, to be fair, Ventus were on top as the break approached.

Manager Danny Milner rallied the troops at the interval and the boys came back fighting with Man-of-the-match Haran completing his hat-trick before retiring with a slight injury late in the game. Steele netted his second and Trinity’s fifth before substitute Kim Brown scored to make it six. Steele was substituted before he could bag his hat-trick. United scored a late consolation but there was still time for Steele’s replacement Carl Dalton to fire in a right wing cross-shot which fooled everybody and found the net.

This was a good Baildon performance and confidence booster. Can the boys go one better than last season and lift the trophy?

Dozza Does It

Sat 11/11/06 Rothwell Town (A)

Trinity returned from a very windy Rothwell with all three points thanks to a Andrew Radosevic strike. In truth he should have netted more on an afternoon when Trinity dominated but struggled to find the net. This was Baildons' first League game for a month and have dropped to their lowest position in the League (6th) so desperately needed a win to keep in touch with the leaders. Town never really looked like they could win this game but at 0-0 may have snatched it. Even after Dozza scored it was the visitors who looked most likely to net. Unfortunately, Trinity haven't another scheduled league match this month to build on this 1-0 away success and look set to drop further behind in the league.

Season Opener v Newly Formed Seven Stars

Greengates Albion merged with the Oddfellows during the summer to form Seven Stars and were our first opponents of the 2007/08 season in Div 1A.

Trinity defended the Dell end in the first half with Matthew Aveyard in goal a virtual spectator. In truth neither 'keeper had much to do as two evenly matched sides cancelled each other out and when the half time whistle blew the score sheet was blank.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring early in the second half when Graham Carney, attempting to clear a shot, deflected it past a bemused mini in goal. Seven Stars then began to get on top and Mini had to be at his best diving full length to his left to keep out a powerful shot that seemed destined for the bottom corner. After another fine Mini save, Baildon rallied in a attempt to salvage the points. With only a few minutes remaining and the visitors apparently tiring, Micky Haran popped up with the equaliser. Trinity had a few more chances to win the game but couldn't find a way past the visiting goalie who had made several good saves to help his team take home a point.

This was a reasonable performance by two teams I would expect to finish high up this season.
