Soroptimist International Award to S I Yorkshire

Members of the Yorkshire Region were delighted to receive an award from the International President for their work under the
Programme Focus Goal - Soroptimists will ensure that women and girls live in safe and healthy environments.

Action on Modern Day Slavery
The region held a successful Study Day in 2005 on the subject of ‘Modern Day Slavery’. As a result, a small group was formed to head up a longer term campaign to highlight the evils of trafficking. The first regional action was to make ‘comfort’ bags which are given to trafficked women via the UK Human Trafficking Centre which is based in their region. In a follow up action to continue to raise awareness amongst adults, they produced stickers to put into men’s toilets and into pubs and clubs. Members continued to lobby their Government about its failure to sign the European Convention on Trafficking. They highlighted this by their third action which was to have a ‘Stop the Traffick’ march through York. They sold purple ribbons, gave out information and the marchers were invited to take part in evensong at York Minster. Purple ribbons continue to be made, sold and worn throughout the region.

Picture below shows members of the regional group headed up by Sylvia Wilson receiving their award.
