An explanation of Programme Action
We call our voluntary work "Programme Action". Programme Action is the reason for being a Soroptimist. It reflects the Vision, Core Purpose and Core Values of Soroptimist International.
Vision To be a global voice for women through awareness, advocacy and action. Together, through international goodwill and understanding, and friendship, we will strive for: the advancement of the status of women, high ethical standards, human rights for all, equality, development and peace.
Soroptimist International is committed to: service to local, national and international communities, active participation in decision-making at all levels of society, international goodwill and understanding |
Yorkshire Region
Yorkshire Region has 27 clubs, actively involved in a range of programme action activities.
Regional activities include: -
Modern Day Slavery
A sub group working to raise awareness of Modern Day Slavery in the Yorkshire Area. Working in conjunction with the Anti Traffiking Unit in Sheffield.
Lobbying Group
This regional sub-group meets regularly as a discussion group on topical issues. The group prepared responses on behalf of SIYorkshire, to government consultation initiatives such as the equality and diversity legislative framework. Current discussions centre on the problems of old age, and the need for a Minister for older people. The leader of the group, Sheila Miller, has already been interviewed on BBC Look North in this connection.
Tea Shops to savour
A guide to the region’s teashops has been published by the Yorkshire Region, and is on sale for £2.50 (inc. postage). Copies can be obtained from Sylvia Wilson, through the e-mail form on this site.
Rail Survey
Yorkshire has taken part in the national Soroptimist rail survey of stations in the region, and has been astonished at the poor levels of safety and security at most stations. The result of their survey has received publicity in the Yorkshire Post, a regional daily paper, and in the local press. Negotiations are now continuing with rail companies.
