INTRODUCTION TO ADULT PLACEMENT

"Adult Placement is the provision of accommodation for vulnerable adults in the homes of specially recruited people living in the community, who are approved for this purpose by an official agency. The carers undertake to integrate such service users into their household and provide appropriate help for an agreed fee, whilst the agency continues to ensure that both the carers and the service user placed receive support and assistance. Such placements can be successfully used for both short term and long term care". NAAPS Summber 1994

WHAT IS ADULT PLACEMENT FOR PEOPLE WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES?

Adult Placement involves sharing your home with an individual with a learning disability (previously known as mental handicap) and accepting them as part of your family. Whether short or long term, Adult Placement entails you taking a personal interest in an individual's physical, emotional and social needs and giving them the opportunity and support required to develop new skills, be independent and live an ordinary life in the community. Adult Placement is a very rewarding experience for both carers and individuals with a learning disability.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
People with a learning disability who are looking for an Adult Placement have many varied interests and needs. We are therefore looking for all sorts of people to become carers - families, couples and singele people from all religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Qualifications and experience are not necessay. What is important is your ability to provide a warm and homely environment and that you are caring sensitive and flexible with the patience, commitment and determination to see things through.

The amount of time you give as carer is up to you, it can be for occasional overnigght or weekend stays, regular monthly stays of a long term stay.

HOW DO YOU BECOME A CARER?

The scheme is carefully structured to ensure carers are prepared, trained and supported thoroughly. Being a carer is not only a rewarding job but also a very responsible one. this is why the selection process is so thorough. The selection process includes:-

1. Home visits
a) Be interviewed on a number of occasions
by Adult Placement workers over a
specific period of time.

b) The prospective carers accommodation will
be viewed and they are expected to
provide an individual, well decorated and
furnished bedroom, for the sole use of
the person placed.

2. References (including personal, G.P., Police
and Social Services).

3. An educative/training element.

4. Report and recommendations by the Adult
Placement Organiser.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Once you are an approved carer, the Adult Placement Worker then looks to arrange a placement which takes full account of the needs and wishes of you and your family. Careful matching with a well planned introductory period is a central part of the shceme. You'll have plenty of time to get to know the person before any placement is confirmed.

WHAT SUPPORT DO YOU GET?
Each carer will be supporeted by an Adult Placement Worker who will be available to provide practical help as well as advice, guidance and emotional support. It will allow for choice and change in the living situation.

WHAT IF THINGS DON'T WORK OUT?
The placement will continue for as long as everyone is happy to go on with it. If it seems that things aren't working out and the problems can't be resolved, you or the person placed will be free to end the arrangement.

PAYMENT AVAILABLE

For each day of support given (ie. 24 hours) there is a minimum payment available of £30.05, dependent on the support needs of the individual. This amount is subject to review each year.
