Distastrous debut for Aylett
With a new Sunday season beginning dawned a new era for Athletic as manager Aylett looked to start his managerial career with a win for the new look side. Hopes were high in the camp with some good pre season performances and Aylett bringing in various new players such as Jenkins and old Athletic favourite Paul Jones.
Facing Tixalls would be no easy task as the Division 2 winners also wanted to set their stall out from the start of the season. With several key players missing including superb keeper Cairns, Athletic looked lively from the start, creating near chances early on. It was however, the newly promoted side who dealt the first blow. A high cross wasn't dealt with and the downward header and beat stand in keeper Halliday.
The lead didn't last long though as Jones, whom looked superb in pre season beat several defenders before his shot was parried out and predator Pierce netted the first goal in the Aylett era. Athletic looked most likely to score, with Gill hitting the post and Jones again coming close. Just before half time a deflected free kick beat Halliday to make it 2-1 to Tixalls.
The 2nd half was not long underway when Sladen handled in the area but inexplicably Griffiths was sent off in a Rob Styles type error. Tixalls converted the penalty and from then on it was one way traffic as Tixalls added a further two goals to send Ayletts men into despair.
With some big names soon to return to the side, such as Danny Griffiths, Mark Crossan and Craig Aylett, the future does look bright, but with a 5-1 defeat to kick off the new campaign Beb must be looking to improve in their next game.

A sinking feeling. Bebington Athletic 0 Wirral Athletic 4
2 games 2 defeats for the new look Athletic under manager Aylett as Wirral Athletic capitalised upon a lacklustre performance to hit 4 past the luckless Bebington. The team, looking stronger and stronger on paper failed to show grit, passion and determination as they suffered a further defeat.
From the start Bebington were always on the back foot and created few chances, whilst Wirral always looked dangerous and attacked with vigour. The defeat sends Bebington to the bottom of the table. A familiar sight over the past few seasons in the early stages but the dissappointing manner of the defeat was all too much for manager Aylett as he only had one pint after the game before retiring to bed

Archers heap more misery upon Aylett...Archers 4 Bebington 2
A hopeful Athletic were shot down by in form side Archers as Athletic are now looking at the grim reality of 3 defeats in 3. Manager Aylett decided to look to his Oracle Sladen and copy his formation for this game and the performance, although in defeat looked far better than the last two games. 3 lucky goals and a third penalty in 3 games given against Bebington proved costly as Pierces superb strike and Douglas's effort proved to be worthless after getting themselves back into the game after heading into half time 2-0 down. Changes in perssonel were brought in as Griffiths worked hard in his new centre back role and Douglas and Ellis came into start in the centre 3 along with Webb.
Looking up at the rest of Division 1, Athletic must be looking to banish their demons and get into winning ways before the rest of the league get too far out of reach

3 Points at last...PSI 1 Bebington Athletic 4
Whilst the nation prepared for Englands vital European Championship qualifiers the quiet suburbs of Bromborough were the site of an equally important game as Beb Athletic looked to turn around their fortunes after a horrendous opening to the season. Manager Aylett rung the changes yet again as he brought himself into the starting line up after reliable full back Alex Griffiths was questioning himself after an eventful night in a gay club and Shane Cairns was welcomed back in his favoured central midfield role as well as prolific striker Danny Griffiths who was thrown straight upfront with Chris Oakley
A stirring pep talk geared the team up and even before kick off you could feel in the air something special was afoot. Athletic started lively, pasing the ball about like it was easy and matching PSI's physical presence. The first Athletic goal came as Jones threw the ball to Webb who found space just inside the box to squeeze a shot underneath the keeper on 30 minutes to the delight of the 20 or so Athletic fans who had made the trip.
PSI responded with a Lufftwaffe of their own and peppered the Beb box with crosses and shots which the defence looked comfortable with. However as in all games so far this season Athletics downfall has been failing to deal with a bouncing ball in the area as yet again the defence stood still to allow the striker to turn and shoot into the bottom corner giving keeper Halliday something to do at last even if it was picking the ball out of the net.
Slightly deflated at conceding a goal just before the half Athletic came out into the second half with extra vigour and passion. Cairns and Ellis controlling the midfield whilst Webb and Jones terrorfied the PSI defence with their tricky runs. All Athletics momentum however was swiftly knocked out of them as Sladen went shoulder to shoulder with the PSI attacker and the referee inexplicably blew for a penalty. As the PSI striker stepped up the collective will of the Athletic players and the travelling fans willed the ball wide and a sigh of relief all round. 20 seconds later a long range effort by Keane-esque midfielder Ellis was spilled by the keeper and D Griffiths nipped in to claim his first of the season as the fans erupted.
It wasn't long after that Webb's marauding run down the left played in Shane Cairns to beat the keeper from a tight angle. From then on PSI could not beat down the resolute Athletic defence. It was from the defence that the forth goal began and what started one of the best goals anyone is likely to see in Amateur football. Halliday threw the ball out to Aylett who quickly passed the ball to Jones on the right wing. He found Ellis inside who quickly returned the pass with a cheeky backheel. As Jones advanced he played in D Griffiths out wide who played a delightful cross for Shane Cairns to once again find the net as spectators and players looked on in awe. Shane who had completed an 8 milun before playing could run no more as Bonner came on to replace the hero of the day.
The delight was eveident as the referee blew for full time. This long awaited performance clearly shows what talent Bebington has and for the first time this season things are once again looking bright.
RATINGS

Cup exit blues
Argyle 5 Bebington Athletic 3
Athletic were brought back to ground with a bump following Fridays first win of the season as they were dumped out of the Sunday Amateur Cup after a battling performance. With several players missing Terry Newcome was brought into midfield to partner Fridays hero Shane Cairns. Singer/songwriter Mark Owen came into left back and Danny Cairns made his first start of the season in the right back position. Goalkeeping hero of last season Terry Cairns was welcomed back to the side after an unfortunate injury in pre-season.
To use an old footballing cliche, Athletic were found still wrapped up in their beds as thay found themselves 3-0 down with just 10 minutes gone. Manager Aylett was fuming on the sidelines as defensive lapse after defensive lapse allowed Argyle time and space to gain such a large advantage at an early stage.
The wake up call was like a cold shower as Athletic returned to the level of performance that saw them pull off a win on Friday. The ball was being played short, no longer to second balls and runs were being made and found. The rewards for the step up in effort soon came as Cairns flew down the wing to square for in form Webb who found the net to make it 2 goals in 2 for the skipper just before half time.
The second half started as the first had finished, however another defensive lapse allowed Argyle 2 further goals with a superb Danny Griffiths finish sandwiched inbetween. The first 10 minutes proved to be the vital period of the game and Even a superb run and finish from Cairns to make it 3 for Beb could not prevent a defeat.
A good performance bar the first 10 minutes and manager Aylett had this to say in his post match interview...
"Obviously we are very disappointed. A cup run would have been nice but their are many more cups to play in and our focus now must be on improving our league position and keeping the level of performance up. It's a blow to the rest of the league that Terry is back in goal and we are finally scoring goals. Danny Griffiths and Quacker are on fire. We also have C Aylett returning next week so we are looking stronger than ever"

No cure for hangover. Bebington Athletic 1 Wallasey Village 1
Sunday, which was intended to be the start of Athletics fight back up the league was predominantly a game which highlighted the problems Aylett faces on Sunday mornings. With several players having turned up 45 minutes late and hungover from the previous nights activities, Ayletts frustration and a lacklustre performance condemed Athletic to another game without a win.
Missing captain Webb through an unfortunate injury in Saturdays game Athletic stil fielded a strong team with the returning Craig Aylett coming in at right back. Athletic never really got going in the whole of the 90 minutes. The Wallasey goal could of been prevented with a little communication but a through ball found 5 athletic players standing still while the striker nipped in to slot past Cairns.
The second half was no different. The Athletic midfield was non-existant with only Shane Cairns looking interested and the only chances created were a Ben Ellis effort that hit the bar and a rasping drive from Josh Douglas almost sneaking in before around 5 minutes before time Danny Griffiths who in the past 4 years has many a time been the hero to get Athletic out of trouble, delivered his 3rd goal in 3 games to the relief of the Athletic line. A point gained rather than 2 points lost in the end and Wallasey Village whom are propping up the league at the moment must wonder how they didn't take away all 3 points.
In his post match interview manager Aylet had this to say...
"I'm disappointed, not with the result but with the attitude of some players in todays game. They must take some personal responsibility in making sure they arrive to the game on time and in a fit state to play football. It won't be happening anymore. We have a large squad to be able to drop those turning up in no state to play. We need results and we can't do that if most people turn up looking green"

Same Old Story...Bebington Athletic 3 PSI 4
The great country singer Willy Nelson sang about his troubles with women and I'm sure he would have enough material about heartbreak from Athletic to pen a new album. It was the same old familiar tale of the season as lack of concentration and basic errors cost Bebington the game which 3 times they took the lead against a PSI side whom were soundly beaten just 2 weeks ago by Athletic 4-1.
Some changes were made to the line up. Manager Aylett has been concerned with the tendancy to rely on goalscorer Danny Griffiths to bag the goals so was looking to increase the firepower upfront by adding Shane Cairns up top whilst Pierce slotted into right wing. Simon Bonner was recalled after several games on the bench alongside Ellis whilst Jones filled in at left back for the harshly suspended Alex Griffiths.
The game was predominantly a midfield tussle until a hopeful shot by Shane Cairns struck a defenders arm and Pierce easily converted the penalty. Injuries struck at half time as Webb was replaced with a suspected hernia by Newcome and Terry Roberts ankle problems persisted and C Aylett came in a right back.
PSI came out fighting and Athletics defence were resolute until the inevitable equiliser went in. Undettered it wasn't long before Shane Cairns was rewarded for his hard work with his forth goal of the season as he picked up the ball on the edge of the box to drill home. In fact Cairns was unlucky not to further add to his tally as he was called offside as he netted in what spectators considered a harsh decision. The referees decisions seemed to be going against Athletic, so much that when Bonner was cynically hacked down on the edge of his own box, the referee waved play on, and as the defence stood still waiting for the whistle the ball was drilled into the bottom corner to make it 2-2. It was another goal that the defence had failed to play the whistle, something that manager Aylett must sort out.
But back came Bebington yet again. A strong run by Danny Griffiths gave him enough room to lob the keeper to also add his 4th goal of the season. To the exasperation of manager Aylett it only took PSI 30 seconds to grab another as the whole team lacked concentration and allowed the striker to turn and place the ball into the net.
Disaster struck with 10 minutes left as C Aylett who has just returned after a stint in Africa caught his studs in the turf and twisted away causing a serious injury as having to be carried off the pitch and an ambulance was summoned. During the commotion PSI found a winner and Athletic were punished once again for failing to play the whole 90 minutes.
Manager Aylett had this to say after the game..."Craig Aylett is fine. It was a horrific injury and will be out for at least 3 weeks so thats a massive blow. As for the game itself? The workrate was there but the concentration wasn't. It's frustrating to see such a talented group of players finding themselves near the bottom of the league. It's up to them to deliver the performances from now one to get ourselves out of this mess"

Late drama as Athletic notch well deserved win.
BEBINGTON ATHLETIC 1 YEW TREE 0
The rollercoaster of a season took yet another turn at Plymyards 5, the scene of a dramatic victory for Bebington. In a largely uneventful game, it was the last 20 minutes when the game came alive and Terry Cairns returned to he form which attracts such clubs as Camell Lairds to be the match hero and save the tears of manager Aylett.
In another changed line up, Athletic were missing Sladen who was away for the weekend, Jenkins who for a charitable cause was running the great north run and Craig Aylett through injury. Simon Bonner stepped back into central defence (even though he was sick on the pitch several times before kick off) alongside Terry Roberts. Terry Newcommen came into his favoured central midfield role alongside Ellis.
The first half was cause for concern as the Athletic goal was bombarded with Yew Tree attacks, with keeper Cairns making several world class saves to deny the ever growing frustrated strikers. Jones and Webb looked lively on the wings and the score remained 0-0. Tempers flared just before half time as Danny griffiths was booked as well as 2 Yew Tree players in an unsavoury handbags tussle.
In the second half, Athletic looked the more likely to score with a fresh impetus injected into the team by a stirring half time team talk. Danny Griffiths missed 2 one on ones and Ellis and Jones came close before Danny griffiths broke free around 70 minutes in turned a defender inside out before unleashing a well placed left footed effort past the despairing keeper to score his fifth goal in 5 games.
From then on wave after wave of Yew Tree attacks were dealt with by Keeper Cairns and the well oiled defending machine. However no Athletic game is complete without some late drama. With just 2 minutes to go a Yew Tree attacker seemed to be running nowhere in the Athletic box, but manager Aylett, playing in his favoured right back position deemed him dangerous enough to lunge into a tackle which was horribly mistimed and Yew Tree were awarded the clear cut penalty. Aylett was close to tears and could not watch as the penalty was taken. Fortunately for Aylett Cairns dived to his right to make a one handed save and win the game and a well earned 3 points.
AYLETT SAYS...
"A great result and about time had some luck this season. Terry saved my life by saving that penalty as Danny Griffiths looked like he wanted to kill me. Everyone on the pitch put in the effort and it was pleasing to see"
RATINGS
Terry Cairns...10...Reproducing the form which proves he is easily the best keeper in the league and why he is wanted by much bigger clubs Justin Aylett...8...Solid and reliable. Loses a rating for his clumsy challenge Alex Griffiths...8...Full of running and linked up well down the left Bonner...8...Good game despite looking rather green Roberts...8...Mr Reliable produces another sterling performance Jones...8...Back to form after a few shakey performances Webb...8...No injury worries today as he was always a threat down the left Ellis...8...Seemed tired after Saturdays game but won the ball in vital areas and played in Danny Griffiths for the goal Newcomen...7...Seemed at sea first half but got his game together and picked it up in the second Pierce...7...Was always a danger in the channels and linked up well Danny Griffiths...8...Took goal well but should of had more

Sladen and Griffiths the heroes in penalty drama
Bebington Athletic 2-Yew Tree 2 (AET) Bebington Athletic win 5-4 on penalties
Nowhere on Plymyards would have saw more drama as Bebington Athletic and the Yew Tree battled in the second round of the Pyke Cup.
Yew Tree were looking for revenge for the 1-0 defeat just a couple of weeks ago and the game got off to a terrible start as no referee was to be found. After much deliberation both sides agreed to officiate a half each. The Athletic team was missing several key players. Keeper Cairns having been married the day before could not obviously make the game and striker Danny Griffiths was injured after a freak accident in the gym. Craig Aylett made a start upfront alongside Tom Cairns and Chris Garrard ccame in at left back after Alex Griffiths was feeling a bit tender after Terrys wedding. Josh Douglas made his first start of the season on the left wing.
The game had barely started when stand in keeper Chris Sladen bundled down an attacker in the box to give away a penalty, the first of many which was dispatched confidently. Athletic soon woke up and could not find the net after creating several chances. Craig Aylett guilty of wasting several chances. Tom Cairns hit the bar with a rasping left footed effort from 30 yards and went close again when through on goal when he should really of scored.
The second half started in the same manner as the first with Athletic giving away a soft goal after failing to clear a corner. Manager Aylett rang the changes as he brought himself off as well as Josh Douglas and brought on Pierce and singing sensation Mark Owen.
Athletic found themselves a lifeline when Garrard's mazy run into the box ended with him being fouled and ref Mathew Gill had no choice to give the penalty which penalty expert Pierce slotted away. Chancces were wasted by both sides and it took a moment of brilliance to bring Bebington level. Terry Newcommen met a rolling ball from 25-30 yards out and hit a bullit of a shot into the top corner to send the home fans into raptures and stake an early claim for the goal of the season award.
The rest of the game was uneventful as both teams looked tired and the game eventually was to be settled by penalties.......

Deja Vu as Little Brighton repeat win over Athletic
LITTLE BRIGHTON 1 BEBINGTON ATHLETIC 0
It was another weekend of cup action for Athletic as they once again travelled to Upton Park to visit in form team Little Brighton who just 2 weeks ago inflicted a tough 1-0 defeat upon Ayletts men.
The team was forced to an early change as Craig Aylett was confused by the changing of the clocks that morning and found himself in bed as the game kicked off. Terry Cairns returned in goal after his wedding the previous week,Matthew Pierce returned to his normal upfront role and Simon Bonner was once again missing, playing up to his team title of 'Lenny Letdown'.
The game itself was something of a one sided affair with Athletic defending like heroes and rather impotent in attack. Cairns made several clearances and Alex Griffiths cleared off the line twice to save the team in the first half. It was extraordinary that Little Brighton could not score but the defence stayed resolute and the score stayed even throughout the majority of the match. The Little Brighton keeper was actually spotted doing the Sunday Sudoku at one point during the second half!
Fearing extra time, manager Aylett brought himself on to replace the tiring Webb and straight after a corner came into the Athletic box and in similar time to the last game these two teams met a header found its way into the net and the Little Brighton players celebrated. It was a disappointing result, especially as the players gave their all and the defense never deserved to consede such a goal.
RATINGS

Yew Tree cut down to size
Bebington Athletic 7 Yew Tree 3
On a foggy morning in Bromborough Athletic delivered justice to their opponents Yew Tree after the previous game between the two was deemed a non-result. With this result, Athletic rode into the next round of the cup.
Manager Aylett fielded a strong starting line up. Craig Aylett returning to the side in his favoured right back position, whilst Sladen, Jenkins and Alex Griffiths kept their places as Terry Roberts was dropped to the bench after a heavy night out. Mathew Gill was welcomed back into the team after a lengthy absence and Paul Jones was selected on the right. Shane Cairns also came back into the team after a few weeks away alongside Terry Newcommen and the Athletic attack consisted of Danny Griffiths and Matthew Pierce.
The match started with furious pace. Athletic looking for revenge and Yew Tree countering well. Both Bebington wingers were a danger as they looked to receive the ball on every attack. It was inevitable that the hard work would pay off and on 20 minutes a mix up in the Yew Tree box allowed Shane Cairns to slip in and rifle the ball past the keeper. Shane has been in great form this season so far especially in front of goal and his delight was plain to see. However, Bebington have been most vunerable this season after taking the lead and it was no surprise that Yew Tree quickly hit back. The midfield runner was allowed so much time and space to play a ball through to the attacker who easily scored. It was no surprise as taking the lead has always been dangerous for Athletic so far this season with concentration dropping as soon as they score.
Bebington, realising they had let Yew Tree back into the game, looked to rectify the situation with Danny Griffiths and Gill coming close. It tooka great move to finally take the lead once again. Craig Aylett picked the ball up in the right wing position and played a dangerous ball intop the box. Shane Cairns lept higher than anyone else to nod the ball back across where Danny Griffiths was waiting to sidefoot home and the crowd on the Athletic line went wild.
Then guess what happenned next?Yes. That foot that Athletic like to shoot themselves in so often was shot in once again as a carbon copy of the Yew Tree's first goal was scored again just before half time and deflated the lads as the half time whistle went.
Athletic came out a different team in the second half as effort level rose and the long ball game in the first half was replaced by slick passing and great player movement, but chances were being wasted and Athletic couldn't find a way through. It took a slice of luck to give Athletic the lead. Mathew Gill found the ball on the left and delivered a weak cross which the keeper inexplicably fumbled into his own net. Gilly has since claimed the goal quoteing that it was going in anyway.
This opened the floodgates as Yew Tree heads went down and they resorted to trying to kick our players instead of playing football. The defence held strong as Alex Griffiths who has been in great form recently looked to cement his return to Captain with a gritty performance. Danny Griffiths hit his second as a through ball found Danny and he ran on the slide past the keeper and celebrated his second. Almost immediately Yew Tree found a way back into the game as a ball wasn't dealt with in the box and was tucked away. The goal fest continued as immediately from kick off Terry Newcommen brilliantly controlled the ball and hit a precise through ball to Danny Griffiths who tucked away his hattrick to make it 5-3.
The next came soon after as Gilly picked the ball up on the left before beating at least 5 men and easily beating the keeper from close range. It was another early contender for goal of the season from the magical winger.
The drama was not over however as Sladen decided to make things more interesting by strangely handling in the area when a header may have been more appropriate. Terry Cairns heaped more misery upon Yew Tree as he saved another penalty to save Sladens blushes. Terry Roberts then came on and made an immediate impact. A corner came over and Roberts was there on hand to grab his first goal for two years just before the final whistle.
RATINGS

His defending as well as his attacking play was superb Alex Griffiths...10...Alex receives the first 10 rating handed out this season. Was excellent in every aspect of the game. A driving force behind the team Keith Jenkins...9...Athletic have looked so much better this season since Keith came into the side. His arial ability and distribution is an asset Chris Sladen...8...Another great display. The partnership of Sladen and Jenkins brings terror to all the leagues attackers. Loses a point for his bizarre handball Jones...8...Quiet game for 'Jonski' but the few moments he had in the game, ie; the stepovers and Brazilian flair were a joy to watch Mathew Gill...9...A tremendous re-debut for Gilly. The team are delighted he has returned to the side full time and repaid them by scoring 2 great goals Newcommen...9...Has been in tremendous form the last few weeks after a slow start to the season. Athletic has at least 4 good central midfielders to choose from and if Terry keeps playing like this he will have nothing to worry about Shane Cairns...9...Never has a bad game and never lets the side down. Looks more disciplined this season as well. Shame for the team he will not probably play again this season as he is going to Afghanistan for 6 months soon Matthew Pierce...7...Ran hard all game but isn't looking in the kind of form that took him to 30 goals just 3 years ago. Can't fault the work rate.

Athletic can't break into Kings Security
Bebington Athletic 3 Kings Security 4
After the resounding victory in the previous week, Athletic looked to continue in winning ways as they took on last seasons relagated team from the Premier league Kings Security. The only change Aylett made from last week was to bring Terry Roberts into centre midfield to replace Shane Cairns.
Athletic started poorly as Kings piled on early pressure. They looked a good team and you could easily see why they were playing in a higher league last season. The first blow came early as a cross Beckham would be proud of was whipped into the Bebington box and the striker displayed great finsishing to loop a header past keeper Cairns.
Athletic saw this as a warning and stepped up their game. Mathew Gill continued his good form as the Kings defenders resorted to fouling him to keep the tricky winger at bay. Athletic at last looked more threatning as passes were being strung together to create chances. It wasn't long bfore the hard work paid off as Danny Griffiths pounced after a defensive error and continued his goalscoring form to make it 1-1 going into half time.
Just after half time Danny Giffiths grabbed his second after a through ball to make it 2-1 and Dannys 5th goal in 2 games. Danny seems to be returning to the form that has made him a hero in the past and long may it continue.
Athletic clearly have not learned to concentrate in vital periods of the game and it all came quickly falling down as Athletic found themselves 3-2 down quickly before Sladen who seems to have a penalty curse placed upon him conceded yet another as the score went 4-2 and Athletic could not find a way back into the game. It was too late when sub Craig Webb ran through to make it 4-3. A thoroughly disappointing game.

Back to winning ways in the Village
The Village 1 Bebington Athletic 2
In weather conditions reminisant of winter in Alaska, Athletic returned to winning ways against The Village. The team was changed around a bit this week although the defence remained the same. Mathew Gill came inside to parner Tery Roberts in midfield while Terry Newcommen was on the right and Criag Webb returned into the starting line up on the left wing. Danny Griffiths was partnered up top by the returning Dean Cavell who was welcomed back to the team after a brief spell elsewhere.
The game started brightly with both teams creating chances and looking likely to score. Cavell adding to the team by his ability to bring the ball down and look for an option is a welcome asset to the team and Danny Griffiths was working hard upfront with some great first touches. Mathew Gill should have scored when one on one with the keeper but his running from midfield was proving to be a threat.
The first goal came when Craig Webb scooped a ball over the defence for Terry Roberts to run onto. He should have scored himself but the keeper made a great save. Fotunately the ball fell to Danny Griffiths who rifled the ball past everyone, including Terry Roberts who was bizarrely standing on the goaline and let the ball through his legs to make it 1-0.
Bebington from then on were the only team in the game and a great goal by Mathew Gill made it 2-0. He picked the ball up just inside the Village half and ran through the defence, rounded the keeper and slotted home to add to the list of goal of the season contenders which at the moment only consists of goals from Gilly.
On a sour note, just before half time a disgusting challenge on Danny Griffiths left the in form striker injured and was replaced by Matty Pierce. Hopefully Danny will be fit for next week.
The second half was end to end as the Village looked to get back in the game, however the Athletic defence was up to the task. Terry Roberts hit the post with a rasping effort from the edge of the box and Mathew Gill came close with a spectacular volley.
Jamie Gill made his first appearance of the season in place of the injured Webb. Village found a way back in as a lob from the eadge of the area beat Terry Cairns to make the last 5 minutes frantic. Jamie Gill could have put the game beyond doubt as he skillfully made his way into the area after beating several players only to fire a weak shot at the keeper.
There was drama in the last minute as another lob beat Cairns, only to hit the bar and to fall to a Village player who fired in. Thankfully the referee blew for offfide and the points went to Bebington.
RATINGS
Terry Cairns...7...Not like Terry to be lobbed but after staying up all night we can let him off Craig Aylett...8...Solid tackles and header and penetrating runs from defence as Aylett continued his good form Alex Griffiths...9...Superb form at the moment. A true leader Keith Jenkins...9...Excellent once again as the defence held strong Chris Sladen...9...Best performance of the season so far as Sladen kept the Village at bay Terry Newcommen...8...In unfamiliar position on right wing but was tremendous yet again. In great form Craig Webb...7...Quiet game for Webb. Seemed to be injured after game on Saturday Terry Roberts...9...First choice for central midfield now with another fine performance Mathew Gill...9...Another great display from Gilly Dean Cavell...8...Worked hard and spreads the ball brilliantly. Struck up a great partnership with Danny Griffiths Danny Griffiths...8...Another good goal to make it 6 goals in 3 games. Hopefully injury not too serious
SUBS
Matthew Pierce...6...Unlucky not to score but just not in form at the moment Jamie Gill...7...Was superb when he came on. Did what he was told to do when he came on and was another who was unlucky not to score

Little Brighton hit Athletic for ten
Bbeington Athletic 0 Little Brighton 10
What was expected to be another close game between the two teams turned into little more than a training game for Little Brighton as they destroyed Athletic with a slick performance.
Missing Craig Aylett and Danny Griffiths, the starting line up still looked strong. However an early injury to keeper Terry Cairns did not help as Jamie Gill who clearly did his best he could could not stop wave after wave of attack and the goals flowed in.
The Athletic players just did not look interested at times and manager Aylett is scouring the transfer market in the coming week to bolster his small squad.

Archers caught in Athletic tornado
Bebington Athletic 3 Archers 0
Athletic are just 2 games away from a historic cup final after sweeping their way past division high flyers Archers. The rollercoaster season hit a high point after last weeks crushing defeat which left players and the manager considering their futures.
The preparation for the game was abysmal. Many players as well as the manager still seemed to be drunk and a kit disaster just minutes before kick off seemed to cement the decision that the manager was going to walk out after the game. Several players were missing including Alex Griffiths who couldn't make it after going to see Al Murray the night before. At least Keith Jenkins and Mathew Gill had legitimate excuses in not being able to play.
Thanks to Slay, sporting the Saturday home strip, the team lined up in unfamiliar fashion. Paul Jones came in at left back whilst Terry Roberts returned to defence after his stint in midfield alongside Chris Sladen whilst Craig Aylett performed right back duties. Jamie Gill made his first start of the season on left wing, whilst Craig Webb continued his positional merry go round on the right. Shane Cairns was welcomed back into the centre alongside Ellis and Chris Oakley made a rare appearance upfront with Matty Pierce.
With weather conditions similar to that found in monsoon season, the first half was pretty uneventful. Chris Oakley was causing the Archers defence problems with his pace whilst the midfield was clearly bolstered by the presence of Shane Cairns. After the previous weeks drubbing the defence looked far more assured with Aylett and Roberts making a difference. The best chance of the half fell to Pierce who found himself one on one with the keeper only to find both his original shot and his follow up well saved by the keeper. Athletic keeper Cairns struggled with his kicks in the gale conditions and was relieved to hear the half time whistle.
Spurred on by the wind in their favour, Athletic doubled their efforts in the second half. Both wingers, Gill and Webb were causing all sorts of problems for Archers. Around 55 minutes in Danny Griffiths returned to action after injury. The partnership of Oakley and Griffiths is one that would have any manager salivating at the prospect of goals and they didn't fail to deliver. Some good teamwork up the pitch led to Danny Griffiths finding the ball at his feet inside the area before firing into the roof of the net to send the soaking supporters into raptures.
Archers were deflated by this setback and the in form team responded with gusto. Throwing all they could at the Athletic defence, but unlike last week they were resolute and nothing could penetrate the firm defensive wall. Breathing space soon came as a run down the left by pacey Oakley resulted in a cross to Shane Cairns who slotted home to make it 2-0 as the midfield general made it 6 goals in 6 starts.
The game was as good as over. Archers seemed resigned to defeat and the only thing left to do was get the goal that was deserved for Oakley. After missing a bagful the day before and missing a couple of efforts in the first half his hard work finally paid off when good work by Danny Griffiths allowed Oakley the time and space to blast past the keeper to send Athletic into the quarter finals.
Manager Aylett had this to say after the game...
"There is nothing better than the taste of victory and the lads deserve all the credit as it was a tremendous victory. To bounce back after last week showed great character and passion. Hopefully we can win the next game in this competition and from then who knows.
I had been unsure of my future the past week. I didn't think I could do it anymore and prior to todays match, I will tell you the truth I wasn't really bothered when I should have been. However after watching the lads play during rain, sleet and horrible winds it re-ignited my fire and passion for Sunday mornings. I can promise the team now that every Sunday I shall show the same comittment that they showed me. We have a fantastic team here. The start of the season may have not been as expected but hopefully now we have turned a corner and so have I"
RATINGS
Terry Cairns...8...Made some good saves and his handling on a slippy surface was impeccable Craig Aylett...8...Can be a bit rash in tackles sometimes but gives it his all. Continuing his good run of form Paul Jones...8...Tremendous team duties today in agreeing to play in unfavoured left back position and did the job very well Terry Roberts...8... Was clearly missed in defence as his pace and defensive abilities were highlighted here Chris Sladen...8...Massive improvement on last week. Back to his usual self Jamie Gill...7...Excellent first start and will only get better with confidence Craig Webb...8...Shuffled around all season but rarely fails to play well. Good team work and build up play. Always links well with Ben Ellis. Training paying off perhaps Ben Ellis...7...Returned to the team after several weeks of being a Lenny let down. Good solid performance after a night of drunkeness Shane Cairns...8...Not one of his best performances but his drive and grit spurs the rest of the team on. The second top scorer is in great form in front of goal Matthew Pierce...6...Still looking for a goal during this drought. Is low on confidence still which will no doubt be fixed by a well deserved goal Chris Oakley...9...Man of the match. His running off the ball and on it opens up defences. The team wish he would play every week as he is a tremendous asset
SUBS
Danny Griffiths...8...Took his 12th goal of the season well. Hopefully his injury worries are behind his as Danny Torres looks to further add to his tally
Terry Newcommen was unlucky to be dropepd and not play a part in the match. He has put in some good performances so far and no doubt his time will come again.

New Gaffer Steele in Debut win
Halfway House 1 Bebington Athletic 4
The new year rang in the changes at Bebington Athletic as manager Aylett stepped down to concentrate on his playing career and was replaced by the most successful manager in Athletic history Richard Steele. Once the brains behind a promotion and a famous Martin Caulfield cup win, Steele was looking to bring the glory days back as his first game saw bebington take on lower league side Halfway House in the Pyke Cup.
The starting line up was arguably the strongest that Athletic have put out all season.. The back four consisting of Craig Aylett, Terry Roberts, Chris Sladen and Alex Griffiths. The midfield welcomed back Mathew Gill after a lengthy injury as well as Craig Webb, Shane Cairns and Paul Jones. The strike partnership of Danny griffiths and Chris Oakley was one to strike fear into any defence.
Athletic started brightly. Looking to crack the oppositions defence. The pace of Oakley always looking dangerous. However, Athletic were limited to a few long range efforts as Sladen and Griffiths blazed over early chances. The team were playing some good football at times with Webb and Gill linking up several times to get in behind the defence and full backs Aylett and Griffiths were determined to get up the pitch as often as possible.Oakley came close to giving Athletic the lead as he rounded the keeper only to see his shot cleared off the line.
It took a messy goal to give bebington the lead. A dangerous corner by Craig Aylett wasn't dealt with by the defence and a goalmouth scramble insued. At least 3 attempts were cleared off the line as well as 2 admitted handballs by Oakley before falling perfectly to Danny Griffiths who struck to notch his 13th of the season.
One thing that Steele must be looking to rectify is the concentration after scoring. So far this season Athletic have been most vunerable after scoring and it was no change in this game. Halfway House piled on the pressure forcing keeper Cairns into several saves. Just on the stroke of half time a wicked cross was headed past Cairns to give Halfway House a deserved equilizer and send them into the break the happier team. Strong words by Steele at half time reminded the team what they were playing for. There was at least 6 subs rareing to go and anybody not giving their all would soon be replaced.
This spurred the team on and the second half was a different story. With Shane Cairns possibly playing his last game before heading of to Afghanistan he was determined to make an impact. His tireless running and tackling made sure Halfway rarely broke into Athletics half. Paul Jones was also giving the defence nightmares. His runs and flicks down the right wing were proving to be a great weapon. The game changed when referee Drew pulled up with an injury. He agreed to carry on but would remain in the centre circle due to lack of mobility. This proved vital as Gill picked the ball up and raced into the area before being felled in the box and a penalty was given. Gill later admitted he was tackled fairly but the position of the referee was critical. Craig Aylett stepped up to blast his first goal of the season and sent Athletic onto raptures.
Aylett soon went close with a 25 yard free kick which whistled just past the post. This woke up Halfway as they looked to get back into the game. Cairns produced several saves and was beaten once only for the post to save him. Ben Ellis soon came on for Craig Webb as well as Terry Newcommen for Shane Cairns and both got stuck in looking to impress the new boss.
Athletic were soon rewarded as a long ball looked to be dealt with by the opposition keeper. However he completely missed his kick and Danny Griffiths rolled the ball in for his 14th of the season and his second today. Halfway were deflated and it wasn't long before the game was killed off for good. Jones picked the ball up on the right and looked to deliver a cross. Mirroring the goal Ronaldinho scored against England in the 2002 World Cup he floted the ball over the keeper and celebrated like he meant it. The debate will go on for years wether he did or not.
The final whistle blew and Steele had started his second reign with a win. Athletic are notoriously stronger after the Christmas break and if they can recreate anything like the run they put together last season then they are in with a great shout of silverware. It was encouraging to see a big squad in attendance and hopefully it may remain.
Man of the match...Craig Aylett

History made for all the wrong reasons
Bebington Athletic 0 Tixalls 0
Thats right. For the first time in Athletics Sunday history a drab 0-0 was played out. After no games being played for over a month it was returning manager Steele's first test in the league and after previous manager Aylett found himself on the wrong end of a 5-1 drubbing earlier in the season to Tixalls the team was looking to seek revenge.
For any onlookers they must have wondered why they would bother standing in the bitter cold as both defences stood resolute and Terry Cairns was rarely tested. In fact Athletic should easily have won the game as Tixalls keeper pulled off a wonderful save when prolific Danny Griffiths seemed likely to score and Matthew Pierce missed several chances.
A scoreless draw was an improvement on the result earlier in the season yet Athletics failure to convert chances may cost them dear as the season heads towards the vital run in.

Fog on the tyne disaster for Athletic
Wallasey Village 3 Bebington Athletic 1
The hopes of a long unbeaten run under new management were dashed on a foggy Sunday morning in Moreton. Hopes were high after a well earned draw the previous week and against fellow strugglers Wallasey Village Athletic turned up expecting to get a result.
However, things began on a downer as reliable keeper Terry Cairns decided that his bed was a better place to be than on the pitch after a hard nights work and skipper Craig Aylett was asked to step into the net and forced manager Steele into some changes. Justin Aylett came in at right back and Terry Newcommen at left back as Alex Griffiths was feeling a little green after his "Geoff" the day before. Danny Griffiths was away for the weekend so Oakley took his spot.
As the game kicked off the fog had lifted and so it seemed on Athletic season as they passed the balla round with the fluency of the Brazilian national team.Webb, Gill, Cairns and Jones having great games in the middle as well as Justin Aylett who was looking to prove a point to the manager as he attempts to work his way back into the first team. But, the same old story unfolded as Athletic failed to take their chances in the vital area of the pitch. Pierce and Oakley missing several chances as well as Jones who had a great chance to score. So it was no surprise that Wallasey Village made Bebington pay as a long ball wasn't dealt with by the defence and the striker shot across stand in keeper Aylett to make it 1-0.
It was soon 1-1 as an almost copy of the Wallasey opener occured as Pierce ran on to a through ball and placed his shot across the keeper just before half time.
That, however, was as good as it got for Athetic as the fluent play of the first half was replaced by lazy passes and hopeless long balls. Before they knew it the score was 3-1 and Bebington heads seemed to be down. Too many chances were missed and Athletic could not find a way back into a game that most would of thought would be a win.
On the plus side manager Steele was given selection headaches ahead of next weeks vital quarter final as Justin Aylett picked up the MOM award as well as Craig Webb being the driving force in midfield.

Athletic march into semi finals after shoot out drama
Bebington Athletic 1 Village 1 (Athletic win 3-2 on penalties)
Memories of the great cup win in 2005 came flooding back as Athletic booked a semi final place in the senior cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over the Village. In 2005 manager Steele masterminded Bebingtons first ever trophy in a famous win at Cammel Lairds and once again a possible visit back to the holy ground of the Wirral Sunday league looks a possibility.
The game was almost called off as an overnight frost caused the Plymyards pitch to be as hard as concrete. However, referee Dempsy after a lenghty pitch inspection deemed the pitch playable.
Athletics only change to the side was a missing Webb who after a 9.30am phone call seemed to be at some sort of morning orgy. Ben Ellis came in to his position in the central of midfield.
Athletic started brightly and dominated proceedings in the first half. Pierce, Jones, Danny Griffiths and Justin Aylett having chances to open the scoring. Chance after chance was being created, yet no breakthrough could be found. Goalkeeper Cairns may as well have brought the morning newspaper as the defence stood resolute. Just before half time Danny Griffiths latched onto a through ball to at last fire past the keeper. It was deserved after the effort that had been put in by Athletic in the first half and they went in at half time in a well deserved if slender lead.
But if ever the famous cliche 'its a game of two halves' was to be applied, it was here. Village came out looking like a different team as they peppered the Athletic area. Like Bebington in the first half they just could not find a way through after several chances. Now it was the Village keepers turn to do the Sunday crossword as Athletic rarely ventured out of their own half.
6 minutes before full time, heartbreak for Athletic and joy for the Village as the opposition player found time on the edge of the box to turn and curl a well placed shot past keeper Cairns and take the game into extra time. Manager Steele certainly had some choice words to say before the extra period but his motivational speech could not help as extra time was a tight affair with both teams looking to keep it tight and not concede whilst not being too adventerous in attack. The only noteworthy action was what seemed like a bad injury to striker Pierce who limped off with a hamstring injury.
So to penalties it went and Athletic had no problem in choosing the five.

Heads held high and Sportmans Victoria prove to be too good
Sportsmans Victoria 3 Bebington Athletic 0
Despite league form, Athletic are proving to be a real cup tem this season as they faced Premier league opposition in Sportsmans Victoria in yet another Quarter Final. In previous incounters Sportmans Victoria (Previously Victoria Seniors) hold a 5 victorys to 0 defeats over Athletic and hopes were not too high in the camp of reclaiming a victory.
Alex Griffiths was brought back into the side as Sladen was unavailiable and Danny Cairns came in upfront to replace the injured Pierce. whilst the team lined up in a familiar fashion
Unfortunately for Athletic they looked to be on the wrong end of a rout as they conceded 2 very early goals from defensive errors, but they put those goals behind them and looked to get back into the game. Danny Griffiths and Cairns missed chances which would have brought them back but the same old story remains as Athletic failed to take their chances.
The second half was all Athletic as keeper Cairns had very little to do in the opening stages and the only real chances Victoria had were dealt with by Justin Aylett as he cleared off the line twice. Webb was soon introduced and had a good chance to make it 2-1 as well as Mathew Gill who found himself alone in the box with a clear shot only to fire wide.
The game looked to be heading to a 2-0 scoreline before one of those moments that make Christmas blooper videos. A Victoria attacker found himself through on goal and the advancing keeper Cairns could do nothing as the attacker slid the ball past him towards the goal. At this point Justin Aylett found himself on the goal line and clearly looked to save the goal as the ball was travelling at snails pace. However a change of direction caused Aylett to become confused at what to do and looked on seemingly helpless ans the ball very slowly rolled into the net. Even Ayletts desperate attempts to blow the ball away could not help as his team mates looked on in disbelief and unfortunately for Aylett as other teams were walking past having finished their games they could not hide their laughter either.
3-0 was a fair scoreline although it failed to describe the chances that Athletic had. If Bebington wish to get through the upcoming semi-final they must take chances as they are having plenty enough of them

Semi Final dress rehearsal ends in defeat
Bebington Athletic 0 Red Cat 2
With a massive semi final looming both teams were given the chance to test each other out this past Sunday as the dress rehearsal of the semi was played out. Manager Steel decided to play things cautiously and went for a change in formation, bringing an extra man into midfield whilst leaving Danny Griffiths upfront on his own. Craig Webb returned to the team and Chris Sladen was left out after missing the week before.
Both teams will agree that this game will not truely represent what will happen in the semi final as blustery conditions made play difficult and during the first half as well as a ruthless referee who felt the need to stop play and lecture players for even the slightest of fouls. Around 5 players went into the book for nothing challenges and the stop start nature of the game helped neither team.
Athletic, who are still chasing points to avoid dreaded relagation could not take advantage with the wind behind them as they created very few chances. The only chances came as Craig Aylett went close twice from free kicks. In fact it was Red Cat who stole an advantage as the Athletic defence stood still to allow Red Cats nippy Right winger in to slot past Terry Cairns just before half time.
The second half was played out with mostly Athletic on the attack chasing the game and Terry Cairns having little to do. Terry Newcommen was introduced as well as Chris Sladen being added to bolster the attack. In fact is was Sladen who should of equilised as a ball across the six yard box found Sladen with the goal at his mercy but the ball seemed to get caught under his feet and he could not take advantage. Similarly, Alex Griffiths headed over from 2 yards out but his saving grace was the referee deemed the ball to have gone out of the play before the cross came in.
Red Cat wrapped the game up in injury time as Athletic pushed men up into attack, Red Cat broke through in exactly the same manner as the first goal to make it 2-0.
Having only scored 2 goals in 5 games, Athletic must find their shooting boots this week in the semi final if they are to have any hope of progressing into the final. Manager Steele will have some tough decisions to make if he is to have a good chance of success this week and some players must be looking to regain the form that has deserted them in recent weeks.
Please come and support the team this Sunday.11.00am kick of at Plymyards 2. All support will be appreciated
