Port's Lever Boys will launch their 2004 season on April 24th at Division 3 new boys Ashton-on-Mersey. Sunners can expect a stern opening day test from a side who were only 10 points from retaining their division 2 status last term.
Skipper Danny Gulliver (pictured, left) is keen to take one game at a time this season and has already turned his attentions to the clash. His options unexpectedly include Porno 'The Count' Martell, Teddy 'Roosevelt' (Crazy Horse) Favill and Ryan 'Zinger' Kearney after Port Sunlight FC's shock failure to reach the Garrison Cup Final for only the second time in 11 seasons.
Gulliver himself took a blow to the head at nets a few weeks ago facing the bowling of a rookie fourth teamer - he is expected to be fit for the start of the season. Sorry, no - there is no video or photographic footage of the incident.
Week two throws up a repeat of the final match of the 2003 campaign as mid Cheshire hardmen Over Peover visit Leverhulme. A full fixture list now avaialbale - just click on FIXTURE/RESULTS.
|As we build up to the long awited 2004 season (Crazyhorse Favill has been looking forward to it since mid 1980's) we take look back to yesteryear in a new series entitled 'Sunlight Gold'. Today we travel back to August 18th 2001. Ex Spurs striker Mark Falco was top of the hit parade with 'Rock Me Amadeus', The Rubik's Cube was all the rage and TV viewers were dumfounded at a new phenomenon - The Remote Control.|
Port Sunlight 1st XI were under the stewardship of Zambia conceived batter Porno 'The Count' Martell. That weekend the team faced a trip to Wilmslow. 'Non cricketer' Spencer Whiting who had slept on the stairs at Porno's house after a night on the lightning shandys and who had enjoyed a breakfast of 3 bottles of Stella made the starting XI. Bruce Neary turned up an hour late, moaned about not getting a bowl and then buggered off early having secured a throughtless duck opening the batting. Brendan Woods turned down a last ball plumb LBW appeal which would have secured victory for the hosts. None of that was deemed worthy of making the news that day...................
'Saturday August 18 2001 – A Vs Wilmslow
CAVALIER PORT RACE TO DRAW
Sunlight managed to secure a draw during an intriguing day at Wilmslow thanks eventually to stand in Spencer Whiting and veteran Jimmy McAllister (pictured).
Winning the toss and fielding Sunners reduced the home side 145 all out in 44.1 overs. Matty Hill finished with career best league figures of 14 overs, 5 for 47 and Cheshire McAllister 3 for 20. The catching was also much improved, 8 of 9 chances being held.
The reply was disappointing however, only Tighe (27), who had also kept wicket well, putting together a good innings early on. When rain robbed the visitors of 9 overs a draw became the best result they could hope for. The extravagant strokes continued regardless with the whole of the middle and lower middle order falling to loose shots – amongst the mayhem Lawrence made a swashbuckling 34, Hill a lavish 21. It was left to debutant Whiting (8 not out) and McAllister (0 not out) to do the job, holding out for a draw in the pouring rain as the innings closed on 117 for 9.
McAllister’s eventful day did not end there however as he discovered he had left his car headlights on throughout the game, sapping the battery of any power. On eventually getting the engine running he proceeded to lead the Port convoy the wrong way up the M56 taking it on a tour of various Manchester Airport terminals in his bid to get back on course.
