SUNLIGHT START SEASON OFF WITH A VICTORY
SUNDAY 1 MAY 2005 CASTROL 58 FOR 9 OFF 25 OVERS PORT SUNLIGHT 59 FOR 8 OFF 18.3 OVERS PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 2 WICKETS
FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON AGAINST A NEW TEAM AND OUR GENEROSITY NEARLY CAUGHT US OUT!!
WITH CASTROL BATTING FIRST AND SCORING VERY SLOWLY WE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO LET EVERYBODY HAVE A BOWL.
"CAPTAIN TOM" SUNDVE AND THE IMPROVING ANDY BLACK TAKING TWO WICKETS EACK AND THERE WAS ONE EACH FOR CARL BARTON, STEVE GRIMES,MIKE GRAHAM AND MATTY DIXON.
IN THE FIELD THERE WAS SUPERB ONE HAND CATCHES FROM BOTH MIKE GRAHAM AND JONATHAN ROBERTS. IN FACT YOU MAY NOT SEE BETTER CATCHES ALL SEASON!! THE FIELDING WAS SUPERB WITH NO BYES AND THERE WAS ALSO A RUN OUT FOR "SORE FINGERS" SUNDVE!!
WITH ONLY 59 REQUIRED TO WIN IT LOOKED LIKE IT WOULD BE AN EASY TASK!
WITH CARL BARTON AND JONATHAN ROBERTS OPENING THE BATTING AND PUTTING THE RUNS ON THE BOARD AT A NICE PACE, IT LOOKED ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE "HOT DOGS" NEEDED PUTTING ON THE STOVE!
ALL OF A SUDDEN THE OPENERS HAD GONE OUT. MIKE GRAHAM HIT A QUICK 11 AND THEN HE WAS OUT FOLLOWED BY MATTY GRIFFITHS FOR 8 AND CAMERON CUNNINGHAM FOR A QUICK 0! ON HIS DEBUT! MATTY DIXON RAN HIMSELF OUT FOR 0.
ADAM HEAYNS PICKED UP THE SINGLES TO GET US WITHIN 2 RUNS OF VICTORY, THEN GOT RUN OUT LEAVING ONE RUN REQUIRED FOR VICTORY. NOT PANICKING............. SO WE LEFT IT TO ANDY BLACK AND CHRIS HELLER TO GUIDE US HOME.
MAN OF THE MATCH - HARD ONE TO CALL, SO THIS WEEK WE WILL SHARE IT, SO WELL DONE ...... TOM SUNDVE, ANDY BLACK AND MIKE GRAHAM.
COACHES COMMENTS - EASIER THAN THE RESULT SUGGESTS, WE COULD HAVE ENDED THEIR INNINGS EARLIER IF WE HAD LEFT OUR STRONGER BOWLERS ON. BATTING COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT IT'S EARLY DAYS YET!
WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!
BATTING - MIKE GRAHAM 11, MATTY GRIFFITHS 8, JONATHAN ROBERTS 7, STEVE GRIMES 7, CARL BARTON 6, ADAM HEAYNS 5, CAMERON CUMNNINGHAM 0, MATTY DIXON 0, ANDY BLACK 0 NOT OUT, CHRIS HELLER 0 NOT OUT, TOM SUNDVE DID NOT BAT.

OUSTED AT OXTON!
FRIDAY 6 MAY 2005
CHESHIRE CUP -PRELIMINARY ROUND
PORT SUNLIGHT 42 ALL OUT OFF 13 OVERS
OXTON 46 FOR 0 OFF 5.1 OVERS
OXTON WON BY 10 WICKETS
NOT A PLEASANT EVENING!!
FACING A VERY STRONG OXTON TEAM WE KNEW WE HAD A PROBLEM WHEN AFTER 3 OVERS THE FIRST 3 BATSMAN ARE BACK IN THE PAVILLION AND YOU ONLY HAVE 3 RUNS ON THE SCOREBOARD!
IT NEVER SEEMED TO GET ANY BETTER AS WE STRUGGLED TO CONTAIN SOME GOOD LINE AND LENGTH BOWLING. MATTY DIXON TOP SCORED WITH 8.
THEN WITH ONLY A SMALL TOTAL TO CHASE AS THE RAIN CAME DOWN, OXTON SOON SECURED VICTORY.
COACHES COMMENTS - WE FACED A REALLY GOOD SIDE. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO BAT A BIT LONGER BUT HOPEFULLY WE WILL LEARN FROM THIS.
THANKS TO KEITH BARTON FOR UMPIRING IN SUB ZERO TEMPRATURES!!
BARRY AND TONY

GRAHAM TURNS UP..... WHAT HAPPENNED TO BATMAN?
SUNDAY 8 MAY 2005
TATTENHALL 82 ALL OUT OFF 19 0VERS
PORT SUNLIGHT 71 ALL OUT OFF 23.1 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT LOST BY 11 RUNS
IT WAS A GAME OF TWO INDIVIDUAL BATTERS.... FOR THEM SPRAGGS ON 40 NOT OUT AND FOR US GOOD OLD MIKE GRAHAM 37 IN A GAME OF WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN OR SHOULD WE SAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN A VICTORY!!
SUNLIGHT'S FIELDING AND BOWLING WAS EXCELLENT WITH TOM SUNDVE ESPECIALLY IMPRESSIVE WITH A FOUR WICKET HAUL, ABLY ASSISTED BY CARL BARTON AND JONATHAN ROBERTS.
SPECIAL MENTION TO JONATHAN ROBERTS FOR ANOTHER TREMENDOUS CATCH AT FIRST SLIP TO ADD TO LAST WEEKS SUPER DUPER ONE! NICE ONE!
WITH ONLY 83 REQUIRED TO WIN THAT FIGURE LOOKED ACHIEVABLE. HOWEVER WITH TATTENHALL BOWLING EXTREMELY WELL WE FAILED TO PICK UP THE SINGLES EARLY ON AND THIS RESULTED IN SUNLIGHTS DOWNFALL.
MIKE GRAHAM BATTED WELL AFTER A SLOW START AND WITHOUT HIM SUNLIGHT WOULD HAVE POSTED A LOW SCORE. OWEN FORD WORKED HARD FOR HIS 7 RUNS BUT SUNLIGHT STRUGGLED BADLY WITH THE BAT!
MAN OF THE MATCH - MIKE GRAHAM. ONCE HE RELAXED HE PUT RUNS ON THE BOARD. WELL DONE MIKE.
COACHES COMMENTS - WE ARE WORRYING!! WE NEED TO WORK ON PICKING UP SINGLES AND MAYBE BEING A BIT MORE AGGRESIVE WITH THE BAT. WE MAY HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BATTING LINE UP AND THE PLAYERS WHO HAVE NOT YET PLAYED SO FAR THIS SEASON.
NO PROBLEM WITH THE BOWLING AND FIELDING. AS ALWAYS IT'S VERY GOOD. MAY NEED DEREK HOWARD TO GET US SOME BATSMAN OFF EBAY!!
A BIG THANK YOU TO ROB DEAN FOR STEPPING IN AT VERY SHORT NOTICE. THANKS ROB!!
BATTING - MIKE GRAHAM 37, OWEN FORD 7, ADAM HEAYNS 3 NOT OUT, CARL BARTON 3, JORDAN MUSTOE 3, JONATHAN ROBERTS 2, MATTY GRIFFITHS 2, STEVE GRIMES 2, MATTY DIXON 0, ROB DEAN 0, TOM SUNDVE 0
BOWLING

OWEN FORD STARS...... IN CLOSE VICTORY
SUNDAY 15 MAY 2005
PORT SUNLIGHT 127 FOR 4 OFF 25 OVERS
MOORFIELD B 122 ALL OUT - 25 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 5 RUNS
OWEN FORD WAS THE STAR OF THE SHOW FOR SUNLIGHT AS HE SCORED A FINE 47 AND TOOK 4 WICKETS FOR 30 RUNS OFF5 OVERS, IN AN EXCITING GAME.
WITH ONLY 21 RUNS SCORED OFF 8 OVERS THERE WAS PANIC ON THE SIDELINES ESPECIALLY AFTER OUR POOR BATTING PERFORMANCE AGAINST TATTENHALL A WEEK EARLIER. HOWEVER WE PUSHED THE SCORE ON WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM JAMES SUTHERLAND ON HIS DEBUT, JONATHAN ROBERTS,CARL BARTON AND ADAM HEAYNS, WE REGISTERED A SCORE THAT GAVE US SOMETHING TO BOWL AT.
ALTHOUGH THE BOWLING AT TIMES WAS POOR - 28 WIDES!!!! WE BOWLED ENOUGH DECENT BALLS, TOOK SOME GREAT CATCHES, ADAM HEAYNS 2, MIKE GRAHAM1, JAMES SUTHERLAND 1 AND FIELDED WELL WHICH INCLUDED A GREAT THROW FROM MATTY DIXON FOR OUR KEEPER TO WIZZ OFF THE BAILS AND FLUSH OUT THEIR LAST DECENT BATSMAN...... L. DRANE!!!!
BATSMAN - OWEN FORD 47, JAMES SUTHERLAND 23 NOT OUT, JONATHAN ROBERTS 20, CARL BARTON 13 NOT OUT, ADAM HEAYNS 9, MIKE GRAHAM 0
BOWLERS -
OWEN FORD 5 - 0 - 30 - 4
CARL BARTON 5 - 0 - 21 - 2
MIKE GRAHAM 4 - 0 - 22 - 2
JONATHAN ROBERTS 5 - 0 - 21 - 1
TOM SUNDVE 5 - 0 -22 - 0
ROB DEAN 1 - 0 - 6 - 0
COACHES COMMENTS
OWEN FORD PUSHED THE SCORE ALONG WELL BUT ONCE WE GOT GOING WE LOOKED GOOD. PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE SCORED ANOTHER 20 RUNS ... AT LEAST!
AGAIN BOWLING WAS GOOD IN PARTS BUT WIDES ARE A PROBLEM ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAVE EXPERIENCED UNDER 15 PLAYERS! FIELDING AND CATCHES BRILLIANT AS ALWAYS. WELL DONE A DESERVED VICTORY..... JUST!
MAN OF THE MATCH - OWEN FORD .. BRILLIANT BATTING AND FINE BOWLING.

TOM SUNDVE FOLLOWING UP WITH A LBW TO SEND THE OTHER OPENER BACK TO THE PAVILLION. A GOOD START WITH ONLY 8 ON THAT LOVELY SCOREBOARD!
ENTER SIMON GEE.... SIMON IS WELL KNOWN TO US FROM PREVIOUS MATCHES AND A FINE CHESHIRE PLAYER HE IS WHICH HE PROVED AGAIN SCORING 51 RETIRED. TO BE FAIR HE HAD TO WORK HARD FOR HIS RUNS AS A RESULT OF FINE BOWLING AND FIELDING FROM THE VISITORS.

THERE WAS SOME GREAT BOWLING ESPECIALLY FROM CAMERON CUNNINGHAM [HIS FIRST WICKETS FOR SUNLIGHT]WELL DONE CAM! CARL BARTON, MATT HOWARD, TOM SUNDVE AND TOM GRIMES JUST TO MENTION A FEW.
IN THE FIELD THERE WAS A GREAT CATCH FROM MARK TIDY AT GULLEY AND ALSO ONE FOR CARL BARTON[SORRY CARL I MISSED IT... ON THE PHONE] THERE WAS ALSO A GREAT DIVING RUN OUT BY ADAM HEAYNS WHICH WAS PICKED UP OFF HIS FEET FROM A THROW BY STEVE GRIMES.
NOW TO THE BATTING.... YES THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON WHEN A OPENING BATSMAN DOES THE BUSINESS... STEVE GRIMES EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE! HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE TILL THE END IF HIS SO CALLED MATE MIKE GRAHAM WOULDN'T HAVE RUN HIM OUT!

KINGSLEY CONQUERED!
SUNDAY 12 JUNE 2OO5
PORT SUNLIGHT 129 FOR 7 OFF 25 OVERS
KINGSLEY 99 ALL OUT 24.1 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 3 WICKETS
ANOTHER FINE PERFORMANCE BY PORT SUNLIGHT AGAINST A DANGEROUS KINGSLEY SIDE WHO BUCKLED UNDER THE PRESSURE OF SUNLIGHTS SUPERB BOWLING AND FIELDING.
FOR A CHANGE WE BATTED FIRST AND KNOCKED UP A REASONABLE TOTAL AFTER ANOTHER SLOW START BUT NOT AS SLOW AS SOME OTHERS THIS SEASON!
WITH JORDAN MUSTOE AND STEVE GRIMES OPENING THEY HAD TO KEEP THEIR WITS ABOUT THEM AS KINGSLEYS IMPRESSIVE OPENING BOWLERS TRIED TO TIE THEM DOWN. FROM THE SEVENTH OVER ONWARDS AND WITH THE OPENING BATSMAN BACK IN THE SCOREBOX!... WITH HYPOTHERMIA [SPELT RIGHT?]CARL BARTON AND MIKE GRAHAM PUSHED THE SCORE ON QUICKLY BEFORE CARL BARTON WAS OUT FOR 14. MIKE GRAHAM CLOBBERED A FINE 47 OFF ONLY 34 BALLS BEFORE HE WAS DUBIOUSLY GIVEN OUT CAUGHT BEHIND BY THE DODGY UMPIRE! "HONEST BOSS I NEVER TOUCHED IT HE SAID" AS HE STORMED OFF THE PITCH!
WITH OWN FORD AND MATTY HOWARD GOING CHEAPLY, MATTY GRIFFITHS SCORED A QUICK 13 BEFORE HE WAS LBW TO A BALL THAT KEPT LOW.
ADAM HEAYNS AND JONATHAN ROBERTS SAW THE INNINGS OUT ON 5 AND 2 NOT OUT RESPECTIVELY.
SO A DECENT SCORE AND KINGSLEY HAD THEIR WORK CUT OUT.WITH 8 OVERS GONE THEY ONLY HAD 11 ON BOARD AND THEY HAD LOST 3 WICKETS. AT THIS STAGE SUNLIGHT DECIDED TO GIVE EVERYBODY AT LEAST AN OVER AND ALTHOUGH KINGSLEY HAD A FINE BATTER WHO RETIRED ON 50 AND THEN CAME IN AT THE END TO SCORE A TOTAL OF 62, SUNLIGHT SKITTLED THROUGH THE TAIL TO SECURE A FINE VICTORY.
BATSMAN - MIKE GRAHAM 47, CARL BARTON 14, MATTY GRIFFITHS 13, JORDAN MUSTOE 11, STEVE GRIMES 7, ADAM HEAYNS 5 NOT OUT, MATT HOWARD 4, JONATHAN ROBERTS 2 NOT OUT, OWEN FORD 2, ANDY BLACK AND TOM SUNDVE DID NOT BAT

MINGING v MOORFIELD
MONDAY 20 JUNE 2004
NORTH CHESHIRE CUP SECOND ROUND
MOORFIELD 107 FOR 5 OFF 20 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT 90 FOR 6 OFF 20 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT LOST BY 5 WICKETS
CUP GAMES ARE A PROBLEM TO SUNLIGHT! A GAME WE SHOULD HAVE WON WHEN YOU CONSIDER WE GAVE MOORFIELD 33 EXTRAS AS WE HAD A BAD "WIDES" DAY A TOTAL OF 23! ONE NO BALL 5 EXTRAS AND 4 LEG BYES AS THE OPPOSITION SHOWED SUNLIGHT HOW TO RUN BETWEEN THE WICKET.
CARK BARTON AND MATT HOWARD BOWLED THE BEST FOR SUNLIGHT WITH 2 WICKETS EACH BOTH HAVING A C&B TO THEIR NAMES.
AS WE CHASED 108 FOR VICTORY, CARELESS BATTING COST US DEARLY WITH ONLY THE EVER DEPENDABLE MIKE GRAHAM SCORING 32 AND CARL BARTON WITH A STEADY 17. STEVE GRIMES 9 HAD A LATE SWING WITH THE BAT BUT BY THEN IT WAS ALL TOO LATE.
MAN OF THE MATCH - CARL BARTON
A DECENT BATTING PERFORMANCE, BOWLED WELL AND A GREAT BATCH {OUCH}!
COACHES COMMENTS - MINGING! POOR BOWLING AND SOME POOR BATTING COST US DEARLY. PLUS WHAT A TERRIBLE MOORFIELD UMPIRE DIDN'T HELP OUR CAUSE!

MIKE GRAHAM BATTED PATIENTLY AND SUPERBLY TO GET HIS FIRST 50 PLUS OFTHE SEASON. HE WAS ABLY ASSISTED BY JONATHAN ROBERTS WHO OPENED THE BATTING TO SCORE A GREAT 29 WHICH WAS A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO OUR VICTORY IN THIS GAME.

SUNDAY 3 JULY 2005
PORT SUNLIGHT 141 FOR 4 OFF 25 OVERS
RUNCORN 46 ALL OUT OFF 25 OVERS
PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 6 WICKETS
TOM SUNDVE TURNED IN A BRILLIANT DISPLAY OF BOWLING WITH FIGURES OF 5 - 3 - 3 - 6 AS HIS SIX WICKETS HELPED BATTER RUNCORN TO DEFEAT.
BEFORE THAT SUNLIGHT TURNED IN THEIR BEST BATTING PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON AFTER FINDING THEMSELVES 38 FOR 4 AFTER 8 OVERS
MIKE GRAHAM STARRED AGAIN WITH A BRILLIANT 50 AND WAS ABLY ASSISTED BY A FINE 29 NOT OUT FROM CARL BARTON [HIS HIGHEST SCORE EVER] AND A QUICK FIRE 22 FROM OWEN FORD AS THIS IMPRESSIVE DUO SAW THE INNINGS OUT.
OUR LADS JUST COULDN'T WAIT TO BOWL AFTER BEING ON THE OTHER END OF SOME "DARREN GOUGH" ANTICS FROM ONE PARTICULAR BOWLER. WHERE THE SUNLIGHT LADS WELL UP FOR IT?
YES THEY WHERE AND WITH TOM SUNDVE IN BRILLIANT FORM SUNLIGHT RIPPED RUNCORN APART. WITH 22 RUNS ON THE BOARD FOR THE LOSS OF 7 WICKETS SUNLIGHT COULD HAVE HAD THE GAME OVER BEFORE THE OPPOSITION REACHED 30!
HOWEVER CAPTAIN TOM GAVE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE TEAM A BOWL AND THAT SAW WICKETS FOR ANDY BLACK AND JORDAN MUSTOE BEFORE SUNLIGHTS OWN STEVIE G FINISHED WITH 1.2 - 1.2 - 0 - 2... WOW!
MAN OF THE MATCH- TOM SUNDVE ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT BOWLING!!!

PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 2 WICKETS
MATTY GRIFFITHS RESCUED SUNLIGHT WITH A FINE 37 NOT OUT AS A MID INNINGS SLUMP NEARLY LOST SUNLIGHT THIS GAME.
SUNLIGHT RESTRICTED STRETTON TO 102 RUNS WITH AT TIMES SOME FINE BOWLING [SEE FIGURES] AND FIELDING. ALTHOUGH THEY FELL BACK INTO THIER OLD WAYS WITH 16 WIDES AND 6 NO BALLS!
HOWEVER THE SUNLIGHT PLAYERS TURNED IN SOME FINE BOWLING PERFORMANCES WITH 2 WICKETS FOR DEBUTANT LUKE AMOS AND CAPTAIN TOM SUNDVE AND ONE EACH FOR ANDY BLACK AND CARL BARTON. JORDAN MUSTOE ALSO BOWLED VERY WELL.
JORDAN MUSTOE AND JONATHAN ROBINSON STARTED OFF WELL SCORING 13 AND 12 RESPECTIVELY AND WITH MIKE GRAHAM CHIPPING IN WITH 18 RUNS. A GOOD START HAD BEEN MADE. BUT AFTER A MID INNINGS COLLAPSE IT WAS LEFT TO MATTY GRIFFITHS TO GUIDE SUNLIGHT HOME WITH HIS BEST BATTING PERFORMANCE AND HIGHEST SCORE OF THE SEASON.

TATTENHALL DEFEAT AVENGED ----July 31st
There was some extra spice for the team when we entertained Tattenhall, as they were the only side who'd beaten us this season on a Sunday. Our side due to holidays was much changed, being made up of 5 lads from the under 13's
Tom Sundve lost the toss & we were invited to bat, opening with Carl B & Jonathan R, who unfortunately didnt last long, out for 2 in the first over. This brought Mike Graham to the wicket & slowly but surely they built a good start --Mike had reached 37 off 47 balls before being bowled. Matty Griffiths now joined Carl, who didnt last much longer, out for a carefully developed 10.
At this point Chris Graham strode to the wicket and proceeded to confound those of us who've been watching the under 13's this season, by batting sensibly. Over the last 9 overs he & Mat almost doubled the score and we finished on 122 for 3.
A decision was made to give as many of the side a chance to bowl and we opened with Tom S & Mat Howard-- both gave little away, 6 overs gone 14 for 0
First change was Lewis Ramsden, who immediately made a breakthrough, getting the opener caught in the slips by Matty G. Owen Ford joined the attack and again kept it tight ---12 overs gone 41 for 1
The game was nicely poised, we'd reached 41 off 10 overs, we needed to keep it tight which is what Matty G & John Barrett did picking up a wicket a piece. Jonathan came on for John followed by Sean Done, who bowled a tight line & length.
We finished off with Carl B & Lewis R, during Carl's 1st over we saw a brilliant running catch from Tom Sundve, which in some ways settled any nerves and meant the total was just too large for Tattenhall to get- they finished on 112 for 4- we'd won by 6 wickets.
BATTING---------------------BOWLING
MIke Graham. 37..................Matty G. 3. 0. 10. 1
Chris Graham. 36 n.o.............Carl B. 2. 0. 11. 1
Matty G. 25n.o.....................John B. 2. 0. 17. 1
Carl B......10........................Lewis R. 4. 1. 23. 1
Johnathan R. 2.....................Mat H. 3. 1. 5. 0
........................................Tom S. 3. 0. 7. 0
........................................Sean D. 2. 0. 7. 0
........................................Jonathan R. 3. 0. 11. 0
........................................Owen F. 3. 0. 13. 0
HIGHLIGHTS----It was a good all round performance by everyone, none of the Under 13's looked out of place. If one was going to be critical, you would have to say that the running between the wicket was poor & the lack of obvious calling meant we lost quite a few possible runs. We could have taken afew more chances as we a number of competant batsmen itching to get out to bat & we may have been able to reach a bigger total.
Bolwing was generally good, a few wides, Sean bowled particularly well. The fielding was in the main tidy, Tom Sundve gave a master class showing everyone how to catch a cricket ball---hopefully I & a few others will remember the lesson. Man of The Match -- this was a differcult one, the Graham brothers both batted well, Sean bowled well but I think the award must go to the player, who produced a little piece of magic--Tom Sundve & his catch. ( The crowds reaction after the ball was hit was summed it up --- it could be a 6, no its dropping short, oh there's Tom, he'll stop it, bl--dy hell he's caught it) --well done Tom.
Special Thanks--to Chris Graham for standing in as wicket-keeper and Steve grimes who played for Tattenhall who were short

ITS ALMOST AS TENSE AS THE ASHES--11th SEPTEMEBER
A Port Sunlight select side played host to a team from Winton CC ( Manchester) in what i hope will continue to be an annual fixture.
The side captained by Tom Sundve, lost the toss and were invited to bat. Matty Griffiths opened after his impressive half century the previous day and somewhat reluctantly Carl Barton. we got off to a steady start against good bowling & it wasnt until the 8th over when there was a 'mix up' over calling that there was a break through-Mat was run out for 7-- we were 18 for 1.
Mike Graham confidently strode to the wicket, unfortunately having faced 3 balls he was returning not having troubled Keith Barton ( the scorer). Owen Ford replaced him but having scored 3 received a waist high full toss & was bowled.
Oopps, we're in trouble, Mat Howard didn't last long on this occasion having played down the wrong line & losing his off stump....we're 24 for 4 off 11 overs.
If we had to choose one player to come in now & not be affected by the position we were in, its Chris Graham--he played sensibly, even did some good 'defensive' shots, using a club bat having split his Kahuna. Gradually under Carl's guidance they started to rebuild the innings, by the 19th over we'd reached 55, the 20th was good one for us-Chris hit 3 consecutive 4's. He eventually retired on 36 in the 22nd, Lewis Ramsden came & went, closely followed by Carl retiring on 35.
At this point the game was nicely balanced, not many overs left & we still need runs-luckily we had Adam Heayns & Jonathan Roberts who between them picked up 24 runs batting very well, good calling, sensible hitting. Jono was bowled in the 29th, bringing ' Slogger' Sundve to the crease, more runs but Adam is out last ball of the over for a very good 16. Sean Done is left with the task of just hit out but is caught & Chris G. returns to finish the innings off----116 for 8, not a great total but from 24 for 4 its a good recovery.
Both teams go off for tea and Tom sorts out his bowlers. He opens with himself & Owen, Tom very tight only gives up singles, Owen also bowling well but giving up more runs--7 overs gone 18 for 0.
Lewis R replaces Owen whilst Mat H comes on the other end, similar situation Lewis gives nothing away, Mat bowling slightly faster is catching the edges conceding runs but gets the first wicket in the 11th over thanks to a Mat G's catch. Lewis is bowling so tight he's given a 5 over spell & gets the next wicket-thanks to Jono's catch.--16 overs gone Winton 49 for 2--it's finely balanced.
At this point Winton's opening bowler Mr Brittain comes to the crease, those lads who played last year can remember he could bat as well as bowl. Sean comes on to bowl spin, ( not what I would have suggested he did but he had the confidence) and proceeds to bowl well, the only problem is if you bowl spin every ball has got to be accurate. Mat Griffiths comes on from the other end--20 overs 70 for 2 (they need 47 off 10). Then its Jono's turn for a couple of overs followed by Carl, its still tight, Tom comes back on & bowls a Captains over-its a maiden then luckily due to a misfield Mr Brittain is given 3 runs & has to retire on 35.--26 overs gone 106 for 2.
Who will Tom choose to finish the innings off, he's spoilt for choice, he's got 1, Lewis has 1, Owen has 3 & Mat H has steam coming out of his ears wanting to get back on plus the other lads as well.
Tom bowls the 27th, just a single-107 for 2, then its Lewis who gives up 2 singles but there's a run out thanks to Mat G. Now its Mat H's turn, can he keep it tight, of course he can, 3 singles, a dropped catch & another run out going for a suicidal second run.
Its 112 for 4, 1 over left no pressure Owen --5 needed off 6 balls,---the over goes like this--- a single, dot ball, a wicket(bowled), 4 needed off 3 balls, no ball, now 3 off 3, appeal for catch behind from all the team plus most of the spectators ( not given, dot ball), a wicket ( catch to Tom), its the last ball 3 needed to win, 2 to tie ---the ball gets played to fine leg, they go for a run, Matty Howard picks up & using his head decides no chances & runs to the stumps-the batsman is run out coming back for the 2nd.

HIGHLIGHTS---What can you say about a game that lasts 60 overs and the result could go one of three ways on the last ball. The game was a credit to both sides, played in the right spirit and apparently the Winton lads were very friendly, as they wanted to chat to our batsmen all through our innings. I have to admit I wasnt confident on victory at a number of points during the game, when we were 24 for 4 and then again when they were 106 for 2 off 26overs. I should be ashamed of myself for ever doubting Tom's leadership & our bowlers skills.
Every member of the side played their part whether with bat, ball or in the field. I think I should mention Carl Barton & Chris Graham's batting which got us out of a hole. Whilst Tom Sundve & Lewis Ramsden again showed what fine bowlers they are. Finally, what can you say about Owen Ford other than he kept his nerve, bowled straight and didnt give Winton an inch.
The only other thing to say is I'm sorry team, you can't please everyone, some of the spectators have 'complained' the game was too tense for them & could you not leave it til the last ball next time.
MAN OF THE MATCH--As I've already said we had 11 stars out on that ground but if I had to select someone, it would have to be the 2 lads who helped get us to a defendable total--Carl Barton & Chris Graham
SPECIAL THANKS--as this was a one off game, I'll indulge in some special thanks-to Pete Sundve for umpiring, Gary Bland for preparing the wicket, Tony Griffiths for helping on the day to set up the wicket, Keith Barton for scoring, Sue & Mat Howard for preparing the teas and making the sandwiches, To Sue Done & Jean Ramsden for helping Sue with laying the teas out and doing the drinks.
Without all of your help, the day would not have gone off so smoothly. Thank you.
