SUNLIGHT END UP WIDE OF THE MARK AT UPTON

After Oulton Park cried off last week, we were a week late in commencing our Cheshire County Junior League career at Upton on a cold & overcast Sunday morning (30th April)

Upton batted first with their Cheshire & Wirral District openers, who put on 83 before Williams retired on 42. The first wicket soon fell to Matty Griffiths, quickly followed by a caught & bowled to Owen. Lewis Ramsden then picked up his first wicket, thanks to an excellent catch by Sean Done. Mat Howard bowling well, closing out the innings, restricting Upton to 129 for 3 off their 25 overs.

This looked a challenging target but after the start Upton had had, Sunlight had done well to keep themselves in the game.
Barry asked for volunteers to open, Owen & Adam stepped forward & gave us the start we needed. Both used their heads with Adam in particular punishing the Upton bowling ---the opening stand had reached 65 when Adam went for a second run & was run out to a very good throw, he'd made 39.

Mat G. joined Owen just as Upton brought on their Cheshire spinner Ross Dixon, who immediately bowled a good line & length. Owen was dismissed for a well earned 23 & Mat G soon followed. This brought Lewis & Mat H together at a crucial time, we needed 59 off 7 overs--both started positively but then Mat H was caught, bringing Luke to the crease.Lewis looked in good form until he was well caught low down in the deep, the Upton supporters felt that this was the turning point..we needed 35 off 4 overs.

John B however had other ideas joining Luke, 9 runs off the next over & it was game on. Ross bowled his last over for just a single, advantage Upton, 6 runs off the next over meant we needed 19 off the last.

The over went 1.1.2.4.1.2, we finished on 122 for 5 and we'd lost by 7 runs.

Team--as above plus Sean Done, Mark Tidy & Nathan Ellis

We had a very entertaining & close fought game against a very strong Upton side. In the cold light of day, we could have won it but we gave away too many extras-26 (inc.20 wides) as against just 8 from Upton.
We knew the standard would be higher but with the exception of Mat Howard our bowling needs to improve. We batted & fielded well & overall it was an encouraging performance from the team. If it continues then the decision to join this league will have been the right one.
MAN OF THE MATCH - ADAM HEAYNS
Adam batted superbly and by taking the game to Upton gave us a chance of victory in our opening game of the season. As captain for the day he sorted the field and bowlers out well ably assisted by Matty Griffiths and Owen Ford.

OUSTED BY OXTON!

PORTMAN BUILDING SOCIETY NATIONAL CUP COMPETITION- PRELIMINARY ROUND

FRIDAY 5 MAY 2006

PORT SUNLIGHT 85 FOR 8 OFF 20 OVERS

OXTON 86 FOR 0 OFF 10.4 OVERS

OXTON WON BY 10 WICKETS

SUNLIGHT GOT OFF TO A REASONABLE START WITH OPENERS OWEN FORD AND ADAM HEAYNS PUTTING ON 29 BEFORE ADAM WAS RUN OUT. OWEN FORD CONTINUED TO BAT WELL AS HIS PARTNERS CONTINUED TO COME AND GO..... VERY QUICKLY! MATTY GRIFFITHS LOOKED LIKE WE WAS GOING TO GET AMONGST THE RUNS UNTILL HE WAS OUT TO A FINE CATCH BY ANDY CLARKE FOR 10 RUNS.

OWEN FORD SCORED A FINE 39 BEFORE HE WAS UNLUCKILY RUN OUT. A TOTAL OF 5 DUCKS [QUACK QUACK] IS A BIG WORRY! 85 RUNS WAS JUST NOT ENOUGH!

IN THIS 20 OVER GAME OXTON TIED THE GAME UP AT THE 11TH OVER, INCLUSIVE OF A FINE 50 BY ANDY CLARKE.

MAN OF THE MATCH - OWEN FORD

OWEN PLAYED WELL. PICKED HIS SHOTS AND WAS UNLUCKY TO BE RUN OUT. KEEP IT UP.

MATTY GRIFFITHS 0.4 - 0 - 4 - 0

COACHES COMMENTS - WE NEVER SCORED ENOUGH RUNS TO SERIOUSLY WORRY THE OPPOSITION. THEY ARE A FINE SIDE WHO WILL DO WELL IN THIS COMPETITION. LETS HOPE THIS WAS JUST A BAD DAY AND WE CAN IMPROVE ON THIS PERFORMANCE OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

NOBBLED AT NESTON

SUNDAY 7 MAY 2006

NESTON 128 FOR 4 OFF 25 OVERS

PORT SUNLIGHT 74 ALL OUT

NESTON WON BY 54 RUNS

PORT SUNLIGHT FAILED TO DELIVER WITH THE BAT AS THEY LOST THEIR WAY AGAINST A WELL ORGANISED NESTON TEAM.

BESIDES A FEW LAPSES IN THE FIELD, THE BOWLING IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY WITH JOHN BARRATT PERFORMING [LIKE WE KNOW HE CAN] TAKING TWO GOOD WICKETS. ALL BOWLERS TRIED HARD ON A WICKET THAT GAVE THE BOWLERS NOTHING!

A TOTAL OF 129 TO WIN WAS ACHIEVABLE BUT WITH NESTON'S FINE BOWLING AND THE FIELD SET OUT INTELLIGENTLY, THE SUNLIGHT BATSMAN FAILED TO GET GOING AND ONLY LEWIS RAMSDEN REACHED DOUBLE FIGURES WITH A STUBBORN HARD EARNED 21.

BATSMAN - LEWIS RAMSDEN 21, OWEN FORD 8, MATT HOWARD 7, HARRY BURKEY 5, CHRIS GRAHAM 5, GARY SUNDVE 4 NOT OUT, JOHN BARRATT 4, SEAN DONE 2, ADAM HEAYNS 2, LUKE AMOS 0, CHRIS HELLER 0

BOWLING

JOHN BARRATT 5 - 0 - 16 - 2

LEWIS RAMSDEN 5 - 0 - 19 - 1

MATT HOWARD 5 - 0 - 25 - 0

HARRY BURKEY 3 - 0 - 24 - 0

OWEN FORD 3 - 0 - 22 - 0

LUKE AMOS 4 - 0 - 20 - 0

MAN OF THE MATCH - JOHN BARRATT / LEWIS RAMSDEN.

JOHN BOWLED TIGHTLY, AS WELL AS TAKING TWO WICKETS HE ALSO SHATTERED THE MIDDLE STUMP [I'LL PASS NESTON'S INVOICE TO YOU JOHN]

LEWIS HAD TO STICK IT OUT THERE WITHOUT MUCH SUPPORT. A GOOD INNINGS FROM SUCH A LAID BACK PLAYER! WHAT COULD HAPPEN IF HE BECOMES AGGRESSIVE WITH THE BAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN!

COACHES COMMENTS - SOME POOR FIELDING DIDN'T DO THE BOWLERS AVERAGES MUCH GOOD! BATTING..... HAS GOT TO IMPROVE BECAUSE THE TARGET OF 129 WAS ACHIEVABLE!

THE CONCENTRATION IN THE FIELD NEED TO IMPROVE. THERE IS ONLY ADAM GIVING VERBAL SUPPORT TO THE THE PLAYERS. IT'S EVERYBODY'S JOB TO ENCOURAGE. SO CONCENTRATE ON THE GAME......NO SULKING, MOANING, BITING YOUR NAILS, DOING WHATEVER YOUR DOING WITH YOUR HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS! OR THE WEBMASTER WILL BE PUTTING YOU ON THE WEBSITE HALL OF FAME OR IS IT SHAME!! ROLL ON NEXT WEEK!

A GREAT VICTORY AT DAVENHAM

SUNDAY 14 MAY 2006

DAVENHAM 122 FOR 7 OFF 25 OVERS

PORT SUNLIGHT 123 FOR 4 OFF 22.2 OVERS

PORT SUNLIGHT WON BY 6 WICKETS

SUNLIGHT PERFORMED TO THEIR CAPABILITIES WITH A DETERMINED DISPLAY TO SEE OFF A DAVENHAM SIDE WHO PLAYED EXTREMLY WELL IN A VERY EXCITING CONTEST.

DAVENHAM'S FIRST WICKET WENT IN THE SECOND OVER. SOME EXCELLENT BOWLING BY MATT HOWARD SAW ADAM HEAYNS TAKE A GOOD CATCH BEHIND THE STUMPS. DAVENHAM PUSHED THE SCORE ON BUT SOME TIGHT BOWLING BY THE SUNLIGHT BOWLERS ESPECIALLY FROM MATT HOWARD, LUKE AMOS AND MATTY GRIFFITHS RESTRICTED THE DAVENHAM BATSMAN. MATTY GRIFFITHS WAS IN GOOD FORM WITH SOME ACCURATE BOWLING RESULTING IN THREE FINE WICKETS.

THE FIELDING AND ENCOURAGEMENT WAS MUCH BETTER THAN PAST WEEKS AND THERE WAS TWO VERY GOOD CATCHES FROM GARY SUNDVE AND MATTY GRIFFITHS.

WITH 123 TO WIN SUNLIGHT HAD A TOTAL THAT WAS ACHIEVABLE BUT COULD THEY GET THEIR BATTING UP TO THE STANDARD TO SECURE VICTORY? THE ANSWER WAS YES!

THE OPENING BATSMAN HAD BEEN PINNED DOWN TO JUST 17 RUNS FROM 7 OVERS BUT AFTER THAT THE SCORE WAS MOVED ON WITH EACH BATSMAN CONTRIBUTING WELL TO THE SUNLIGHT TOTAL.

LEWIS RAMSDEN BATTED SENSIBLY FOR HIS 20 NOT OUT AS CHRIS "FREDDIE FLINTOFF" GRAHAM STEERED SUNLIGHT TO A FINE VICTORY WITH A FEROCIOS BIT OF BATTING WHICH RESULTED WITH HIM BEING 32 NOT OUT AT THE END OF THE MATCH.

BATSMAN - CHRIS GRAHAM 32 NOT OUT, LEWIS RAMSDEN 20 NOT OUT, MATTY GRIFFITHS 19, MATT HOWARD 18, OWEN FORD 15, ADAM HEAYNS 8

SEAN DONE, LUKE AMOS, GARY SUNDVE, CHRIS HELLER AND CAM CUNNIGHAM - DID NOT BAT

BOWLING

LEWIS RAMSDEN 5 - 0 - 28 - 1

MATT HOWARD 5 - 0- 16 - 1

OWEN FORD 3 - 0 - 11 - 0

CAM CUNNINGHAM 1 - 0 - 13 - 1

LUKE AMOS 5 - 0 - 19 - 1

MATTY GRIFFITHS 5 - 0 - 15 - 3

CHRIS GRAHAM 1 - 0 13 - 0

MAN OF THE MATCH - MATTY GRIFFITHS / CHRIS GRAHAM

MATTY GOT HIS BOWLING SORTED AND WAS CONSISTANT WHICH RESULTED IN 3 WICKETS. HE ALSO TOOK A GOOD CATCH AND CONTRIBUTED 19 RUNS TO OUR TOTAL

CHRIS, A RUTHLESS 32 WITH SOME POWEFUL BATTING WHICH THE HOME TEAM COULD NOT DEAL WITH.

COACHES COMMENTS - A VERY GOOD VICTORY. BOWLING, BATTING AND FIELDING IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY. ADAM'S EXCUSE FOR THE BOWLING CHANGE......YOU SAID GIVE THE FRINGE BOWLERS AN OVER! HE'S OFF THE HOOK THIS WEEK.......JUST!

SERIOUSLY.......WE KNEW THE STANDARD WAS HIGH IN THE CHESHIRE LEAGUE BUT THAT WAS A VERY GOOD TEAM PERFORMANCE! WELL DONE LADS!

SUNLIGHT DEFEATED BY LEAGUE LEADERS

SUNDAY 28 MAY 2006

PORT SUNLIGHT 69 ALL OUT OFF 20.3 OVERS

GRAPPENHALL 72 FOR 3 OFF 19.5 OVERS

GRAPPENHALL WON BY 7 WICKETS

WITH LAST WEEKS GAME OFF AGAINST BOUGHTON HALL IT WAS BACK TO BUSINESS AGAINST LEAGUE LEADERS GRAPPENHALL.

CHOOSING TO BAT FIRST SUNLIGHT GOT OFF TO A POOR START WITH OWEN F GOING FOR A SINGLE THAT WASN'T THERE WHICH HAD ADAM H BACK IN THE PAVILLION WITHOUT FACING A BALL. THIS WAS THE SIGN OF THINGS TO COME AS A TOTAL OF 3 UNECESSARY RUN OUTS DID NOT HELP SUNLIGHT POST A CREDIBLE SCORE.

MATT HOWARD BATTED EXTREMELY WELL AS HIS BATTING PARTNERS CAME AND WENT. BATTING AT NUMBER 3 MATT STAYED TILL THE END OF THE INNINGS TO REGISTER A SCORE OF 33 NOT OUT. ONLY HARRY BURKEY MADE ANY WORTHWHILE CONTRIBUTION WITH A FINE KNOCK OF 19.

WITH ONLY 70 REQUIRED TO WIN GRAPPENHALL DID NOT HAVE IT ALL THEIR OWN WAY AS SUNLIGHT'S BOWLING AND FIELDING WAS FIRST CLASS. OPENER ROWE SCORED 35 BUT THE UMPIRE FAILED TO GIVE A CATCH BEHIND THE STUMPS BY ADAM HEAYNS FROM A FINE BALL BY JOHN BARRATT WHICH EVERYBODY HEARD BESIDES THE UMPIRE!

SEAN DONE TOOK TWO GOOD WICKETS WITH HIS DODGY SPIN AND OWEN FORD TOOK ANOTHER. MATT HOWARD, JOHN BARRATT AND HARRY BURKEY BOWLED WELL WITHOUT SUCCESS. MARK TIDY AND CAM CUNNINGHAM MADE SOME GOOD STOPS IN THE FIELD FOR SUNLIGHT.

MAN OF THE MATCH - MATT HOWARD

MATT BATTED WELL [ EVEN THOUGH HE WAS INVOLVED IN TWO RUN OUTS]! A MASSIVE 6 AND SOME GOOD STRIKES WILL HAVE BOOSTED HIS CONFIDENCE. KEEP IT UP MATT.

BATTING - MATT HOWARD 33 NOT OUT, HARRY BURKEY 19, CHRIS GRAHAM 3, OWEN FORD 2, S.DONE 2, GARY SUNDVE 1, ADAM HEAYNS 0, JOHN BARRATT 0, CAM CUNNINGHAM 0, CHRIS HELLER 0, MARK TIDY 0

BOWLING

SEAN DONE 2.5 - 0 -15 - 2

OWEN FORD 5 - 0 - 15 - 1

HARRY BURKEY 4 - 1 - 10 - 0

MATT HOWARD 5 - 0 - 11 - 0

JOHN BARRATT 3 - 0 - 16 - 0

COACHES COMMENTS

BATTING - 3 UNECESSARY RUN OUTS ADAM H, CHRIS G AND JOHN B DID NOT HELP OUR CAUSE. IF WE HAD PUT ANOTHER 40 RUNS ON THE BOARD THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN MUCH CLOSER.

BOWLING, FIELDING AND ENCOURAGEMENT IN THE FIELD WAS FIRST CLASS.

LETS HOPE WE LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE!

SUNLIGHT COME GOOD IN THE RAIN-- 18th June

With our first match in the Shield competition we welcomed Appleton to a grey and overcast Wirral. Owen won the toss, elected to bat & for the 2nd week Mat H & Lewis got us off to a good start. Appleton's bowlers struggled to control the ball and both players took advantage, puting on 41 in 4 overs before Lewis was bowled for a quick fired 28.

Owen now joined in the action, both lads continued to score but in a more controlled manner, Owen reaching 13 before he gave a straight forward catch.Mat G strode to wicket hoping not to give another catch behind, at least this time it didnt happen but unfortunately he was bowled without scoring.

Adam now joined Mat & for me I wondered how they would get on/ react after the Warrington debacle, I needn't have worried--the calling was good & clear, the scoreboard kept ticking over. Mat H gave one chance but then took advantage of the let off eventually retiring on 42.

There werent many overs left when John B came in, batting sensibly the runs continued to flow before being caught for 6. Chris G now joined in the fun, Adam used his brains & gave Chris much of the strike, whilst Chris bludgeoned the Appleton attack around the ground including a very big 6.

We'd scored 164 for 4 off our 25 overs, with Adam 27n.o. & Chris on 24.

The weather had gone iffy during our innings and now it was heavy drizzle. With our best total so far there was no way we were going to come off for the weather.

Appleton were encouraged from the dressing room to start their innings facing Mat H & Lewis who for once got no success. Both bowled with pace & got lift off the wicket but without the necessary control--Appleton simply used the pace of the ball to their advantage.

Owen brought himself on & immediately got some more control & in conjunction with Luke, who used his accuracy without the pace started to pick up wickets--Owen got rid of both openers via good catches by Adam & finished his spell with a fine off stump ball fto pick up 3 for 12 off 5. Luke ending with 2 for 15 off his 5 over spell.

Having realised that pace wasnt needed especially with the rain still falling, John B bowled a couple of overs of 'spin' plus good accurate bowling from Dan Z, Gary S and a fine spell from Jamie meant that Appleton were reduced to 87 all out, just as the drizzle died down.

BATTING..............................BOWLING

Mat H..42 retired............Owen. 5.0.12.3

Lewis..28......................Jamie. 3.2 1.6.2

Adam 27n.o...................Luke. 5.0.15.2

Chris G 24n.o.................Gary 1.0.6.1

Owen. 13......................John 2.0.8.1

John B. 6.......................Dan Z. 2.1.4.0

...................................Mat H 2.0.16.0

...................................Lewis 4.0.20.0

Thought for the Day---A very positive batting display, we started well & dominated the Appleton attack. When we fielded it took a little while to realise that the most important thing was line & length as pace was actually a handicap.

Man of the Match.....differcult to pick out just one lad, everyone on the field played a part but once again no one was perfect, everyone can look at their own game & say I could have done this or that a little better.

Mat H, Lewis, Adam & Chris G all batted well. Owen, Luke, Jamie, Gary & Dan bowled well whilst in the field there were good catches by Adam & Mat H but also some misfields not all of which can be put down to the weather. I'd like to pick Mat H for his batting & a very nice catch but in between he needs to remember its a team game.

So this week its only fair that the award goes to the whole team, as it was a team performance.

SUNLIGHT TRAVEL TO HEATON MERSEY & BEYOND-25th JUNE

The Sunlight side started on their travels early Sunday morning & with hindsight they should stayed overnight because we arrived late. The Heaton Mersey manager offered to reduce the number of overs but we were happy to play the full 25 overs. After about 14 overs Heaton we're beginning to think they'd made a wrong decision.

BATTING........................BOWLING

ADAM...17.....................NATHAN..1.0.2.1

MAT H..40ret.................OWEN..3.1.4.1

MAT G..42ret................LEWIS..3.1.1.7

CHRIS G..4.................SEAN..3.0.24.1

OWEN..31 n.o.............CHRIS G..1.0.7.0

NATHAN..3.................MAT H..3.0.8.0

SEAN..13...................JOHN..2.0.9.0

GARY..2n.o................GARY..3.0.16.0

LUKE..d.n.b...............

Sunlight scored 183 for 6 & restricted Heaton Mersey to 107 for 6. It looks like another fine win but I was told we should have been more ruthless in the field.

Currently we are sitting at the top of the Shield Competition but it looks like it could come down to our last game of the season agaisnt Timperley.

Derek

SUNLIGHT TRAVEL TO STYAL FOR THE NORTH CHESHIRE CUP

Sunlight played Alderley Edge in their Under 15 quarter final cup game at Styal Cricket Club--the weather was perfect and our supporters praised the menu. Alderley won the toss & elected to bat, losing their opener in the 1st over bowled by Mat Howard.Lewis bowling from the other end on a fast outfield for once didnt have his usual control & Alderley started to recover.

Six overs gone, they were 34 for 1 when Owen brought himself & John B on, the scoreboard kept ticking over before John made a double breakthrough, thanks to catches by Lewis & Owen.

The game was nicely poised at 55 for 3 off 8, Alderley continued to pick up singles & the odd 4 before Luke joined the attack and with the help of a fine catch by Gary we got the next wicket. Gary then joined in the fun with the help of another nice catch by Adam. Luke then got his second wicket with possibly the hardest catch, well it was in the air the longest, with Sean pouching the ball in the deep & making it look second nature to him.

Alderley were 130 for 6 with 3 overs to go and looking to reach 150+. It was at this stage that our bowlers showed their abilities, Lewis went for 4, so did Mat H and Owen completed the innings with 5 singles. The professionals say if you only go for 6 an over at the death you've done well.

Alderely had scored 143 for 6 off their 20 overs ( the Styal secretary said the wicket was averaging 7 runs a over this season) we'd done well with only 5 wides & a no ball--the fielding had been clean & at times very good -- our catching was faultless..5 chances=5 dismissals.

We started our reply with Mat H & Lewis, the Alderely opener was fast if a little wayward, bowling too short at times...we'd reached 30 in the 6th over before Lewis was bowled for 6. Owen came in & was given a warm welcome, promptly being hit on the helmet.

Alderley operated with fast bowlers one end & a County spinner at the other, Mat having reached 22 edged one to the wickie. John came in and struck 2 fours, we were 49 for 2 off 9. Owen went LBW for 5 and Adam soon followed for 4. Luke joined John and score had reached 73 when John was bowled for 17, Luke soon followed.

Nathan was now at the wicket, he confidently hit a 4 & a couple of singles before being bowled, Gary strode to the wicket & promptly walked back. This meant that Mark T now had his chance with Sean who'd been watching his partners come & go--the score had reached 90 when Mark was caught which left Jamie only 4 balls for glory. unfortunately for him, Sean had crossed during the dismissal & he picked up 7 runs plus 3 wides without giving Jamie a chance to show off. We finished on 100 for 9 and lost by 43 runs.

BATTING............................BOWLING

Mat H..22........................John..3.0.25.2

John..17..........................Luke..3.0.25.2

Sean..10 n.o....................Mat H..4.0.10.1

Lewis..6..........................Gary..2.0.17.1

Nathan..6........................Owen..4.0.28.0

Owen..5..........................Lewis..4.0.32.0

Adam..4.................................................

Mark T..2..............................................

Thought for the day....As I've already said the catching was perfect, the fielding generally very good, the bowling with the exception of Mat H was only OK. We didnt give many wides away but at times we bowled too short. Our batting got off to a good start but Alderley's bolwers didnt give us enough bad balls for us to punish. From my point of view everyone looked as if they were trying, no one's head went down with Mat H, Jamie & Mark making some fine stops in the field.

Man of the Match.....Gary, Sean & Adam all took fine catches, Jamie & Mark did well in the field whilst Owen & Lewis came back well at the death when bowling. But on today's all round performance there can be only one man of the match-- he lead by example with his bowling, it had pace but more importantly accuracy, his batting was crisp whilst his fielding was first class setting a standard that he'll now have to repeat---today's M.o.M. is Mat Howard

Finally--- special thanks has got to go to Sue Howard who at the last minute agreed to be a team driver...as a thank you she had a night out in sunny Cheshire, went out for meal ( well chips are a meal) and had the company of at least 3 young men & she says I never take her out.

ANOTHER EARLY START FOR SUNLIGHT --9th JULY

Just a quick report this week, we travelled to Mobberley with a slightly changed side, welcoming Danny Zema & Chris Heller back to the side and making his cheshire debut Liam Crosbie.

We ( eventually) arrived having taken the scenic route to a very damp Mobberley, Owen won the toss & decided to bowl.

The usual suspects had a bowl and with the excepton of Owen tended to bowl slightly too short on what was a very small & sloping ground. Mat H picked up 2 wickets whilst Owen, Lewis, Mat G & Gary picked a wicket a piece. Mat G took 2 fine catches especially the 2nd one on the boundary edge--I'm sure Mat H will say he bowled to his field when he pitched it short & the batsman hooked it but Mat G still had some work to do. Lewis wasnt so lucky he got hooked out of the ground = 1 lost ball.
The fielding was ok, Chris Heller was generally very good at stopping the ball with his hands BUT he's got to practice his diving, Lewis showed him how it should be done.

Mobberley made 113 for 6 off their 25 overs. It was a bigger total then seemed likely when they were only 42 off 12 overs.

Sunlight opened their reply with Mat H & Lewis, quickly reaching 22 before Mat was bowled for 16. Owen now came to wicket and proceeded to bat with maturity, picking up singles whilst Lewis tried to hit everything out of the ground. The score had reached 43 when Lewis gave one too many chances & was out for 20.

Mat G now took his chance, Mobberley were running out of ideas, as we accumulated the runs & we had reached 64 in the 12th over when Mat G was bowled. Dan Z was given the instructions 'there's no need to take chances, go out & enjoy yourself'-- 1st ball he tried to carve out the ground. Having said that he & Owen proceeded to a 50 run partnership--Owen hitting the first ball of the 20th over for 4, to both win the game but also reach his own milestone --41 n.o. Dan had played a major role with 19 n.o...we finished on 115 for 3.

BATTING.............................BOWLING

Owen...41 retired.............Mat H..5. 1. 17. 2

Lewis...20.......................Owen..5. 2. 10. 1

Dan Z...19n.o...................Gary..1. 0. 11. 1

Mat H...16........................Mat G..5. 0. 29. 1

Mat G...13........................Lewis..5. 0. 31. 1

......................................John..4. 1. 13. 0

Thoughts on the day....Looking at the above figures I mention only 7 players but the other 4 Adam, Cam, Chris H & Liam all played their part in our victory. It was never quite certain what part the weather would play in the game, luckily for us--the ground whilst very wet was never dangerous and it didnt start raining until just after the winning run was struck.

It's another 4 points in our quest to win the Shield. Looking at the table it would appear that if we continue to win our games & win them well, then our destiny is in our own hands. Warrington can finish level on points but aren't making the big totals. Whilst Timperley are also in with a shout--it might even go down to the wire & our last game at home to Timperley--weather permitting.

Man of the Match--this week there can only be one candidate--for his accurate bowling and mature batting, it has to be Owen Ford.

Derek

SUNLIGHT GO ON TOUR ABROAD--MARCHWEIL 14th JULY

Sunlight took a fairly experienced side on their first foray into Wales for a 20 over friendly against an unknown Marchweil side.

Sunlight opened the batting with Mat H & Lewis, reaching 23 in the 5th over when Mat was bowled for 17. Mat G came & went, soon followed by Owen who was run out by a smart bit of fielding. Adam joined Lewis & between them they accumulated a runs until Adam was bowled in the 11th over.

Dan Z now joined Lewis & proceeded to show the team what they had been missing for most of the season. Lewis retired having made 40 soon followed by Dan. John, Chris H & Nathen only had an over left to try to add to the total--we finished on 116 for 6

Owen opened the attack picking a wicket in his first over, followed by 2 more in his second, John B giving him able support. Marchweil now had a period of recovery, their 2 lads batting sensibly. Lewis & Mat G had replaced the opening pair but couldn't make the breakthrough. Mat H came onto bowl which was a surprise when he had a bad hamstring, Dan Z & Nathen also had a go without success. Owen came back on to show how it could be done picking up a further 2 wickets to make 5 in total. Marchweil finished on 82 for 6, losing by 34 runs.

BATTING.............................BOWLING

Lewis...40 retired.............Owen..4. 1. 7 . 5.

Dan Z...40 retired.............Nathen..1. 0. 2. 0

Mat H..17.......................Dan Z..2. 0. 7. 0

Adam..5.........................John ..3. 0. 10. 0

John..2...........................Mat H..3. 0. 14. 0

Mat G..1.........................Lewis..4. 1. 16. 0

Owen..0..........................Mat G..3. 0. 17. 0

Chris H..0.................................................

Nathen..0 n.o...........................................

Thoughts for the Day.....My first thought is to thank Marchweil for the friendly which was played in a good spirit and hopefully we can repeat in the future. Dan Zema proved today what he can do when he gets the chance & as important when he is available. Lewis batted well whilst some of the others need practice moving their feet more. Too often our batsmen are getting trapped on the crease. The fielding was fairly tight & we restricted their batsmen.

Man of the Match..... Dan & Lewis both batted very well but I think today it has to be Owen, not just for his 5 wicket haul but for his mature attitude when he was run out without scoring. His first comments were 'these things happen', there was no pad thumping or bat bouncing. Something that some of the other lads can hopefully learn from.

10 MAN SUNLIGHT COME UNSTUCK AT STOCKPORT-July 20th

Sunlight travelled to very sunny & sticky Stockport for an evening Cheshire league fixture. We played with one short after a last minute phone call to say our 11th man was still in Chester.

By the time most of us got there due to the traffic, the managers agreed on a 20 overs a side game, Adam won the toss & elected to bowl, opening with Mat H & Gary while we waited for John & Lewis to finish their scenic journey ( that was my fault as I gave Brian a slightly different route).

Stockport had reached 19 in the 7th over when Mat H bowled the opener, both of our lads finished their 4 over spells going for just 12 runs each. Lewis & John, having eventually arrived, replaced them but neither were at their best. Whilst they picked up wickets they were wayward without their usual control.Luke was brought on but without success whilst Nathen had an over which didnt do him justice.

Stockport reached 112 for 5 off their 20 overs and the light was disappearing as Mat H & Lewis quickly went out to bat.

Mat H quickly got off the mark picking up a very nice 4 and between them they had reached 30 in the 6th over when Mat went for another big shot only to hole out to someone on the boundary. Chris G came to the crease but never looked comfortable and both he & Lewis soon departed.

John was now joined by Adam quickly followed by Gary & before we knew it we'd gone from 30 for 0 to 39 for 5 in just 5 overs.Luke had a go but it wasnt until Chris H & Nathen came together in the 14th over did the scoreboard start ticking over. Nathen played some nice shots off his legs before Stockport learnt their lesson & bowled him a straight one.

Liam went out to bat at 63 for 8 needing 50 runs off 29 balls....to give both lads their due they gave it a go...Liam realised Chris H was more likely to hit the big hits and gave him much of the strike. Chris for his part was hitting the ball cleanly & struck a very nice 6 straight down the ground. At one stage I thought we might do this but then I realised that Chris would reach 40 before we got to our total. The 2 lads played really well putting on 32 for the 9th wicket when Chris was bowled for 30 in the last over---we were all out for 95. Once again we'd not performed in a 20 over match, how we missed our 11th man, losing by 17 runs.

Thoughts for The Day......The night started with what I'll politely say was a disappointment when I got the phone call to say we'd only have 10 men & it didnt really get much better. As a team we just didnt perfrom, I'm not quite sure why that was--we just didnt seem up for the game.

At times we didnt protect the boundary & on the fast outfield the ball soon ran away from our fielders. Yes, we only had 10 men but we could/ should have done better. Our fielding in the main was slow, it wasnt crisp enough, with the exception of isolated incidents such as Chris H's excellant pick in the deep running at full stretch and Mat H's measured pick up & throw for a run out.

Our bowling let us down, we gave away 16 wides & no balls--we only lost by 17 runs.

Batting wise the middle order just didnt happen today, whilst our openers both got started but didnt complete the task.

My final gripe would be that if players watched their team mates batting, instead of say playing football, they could learn something to their benefit. They could also see how other teams set their fields & watch the opposition's bowlers

On a positive note, Barry & I can only hope that every player out there when he thinks about their own individual performance will be able to easily identify something that they need to work on. If anyone can't think of anything, all you have to do is ask me.

Man of the Match--- After all the negative comments above, it wasnt all bad watching the game-- Chris H's enthusiastic batting to me was the highlight & for me I think he deserves to be the Man of the Match.

MORE WHEELS COME OFF THE SUNLIGHT WAGON-23rd JULY

Sunlight welcomed a Disley side to a sundrenched ground and with some changes to our team, won the toss & elected to bat.

Adam opened with Mat H and both were looking comfortable when in the 3rd over Disley got a double breakthrough-Mat was bowled round his legs & Adam was run out. Harry & Mat G now had the task to rebuild the innings, progress was made until in the 8th over when Mat G was bowled.Unfortunately Chris G with his confidence at a low point followed in the next and Harry didnt last much longer. John B hung around for a while but didnt trouble the scorers, we were 41 for 6 in the 13th and it was all going pear shaped.

Cometh the hour cometh the man, Gary S now showed the batting skills he's been showing in the nets when hitting his Dad to all points of the ground. He'd made a very nice 27 when he was given out, stumped, by 'Trigger' Griffiths. Nathan who had been keeping Gary company followed Mark T back to the clubhouse when he went for a run holding his bat like a wand & was run out. When will our lads learn to run their bats in on the ground.Andy B & Jamie were left at the crease trying to raise the total before Jamie got one that lifted & in trying to take evasive action was caught & bowled.

We were all out for 70 in the 21st over, with the exception of Gary no one batted to their potential, in fact some lads have to look very carefully at how they got out, it just wasnt good enough.

With a small total to defend and a slightly different bowling attack, we opened with Mat H & Gary--both lads bowled reasonable but on the quick outfield any edge flew to the boundary. Gary got the 1st breakthrough in the 4th over with a caught & bowled followed in the next by a caught behind by Adam..Disley were 14 for 2 at this stage and they had progressed to 44 for 3 in the 10th at the end of the 2 lads spells.

John B picked up a wicket in his 1st over & so did Harry, things were becoming interesting at 49 for 5, we needed 2-3 more wickets but Disley only needed 22 off 17 overs. Luckily, Disley tried to help us out with a suicidal run out in the next over--57 for 6. But two overs later it was all over when they hit two consecutive 4's to win the game.

BATTING..........................BOWLING

Gary S..27.....................Gary S....5. 0. 23. 2

Mat H..4.......................John B.....2. 0. 13. 1

Nathan E..4...................Mat H.....5. 0. 21. 1

Thoughts For the Day.....After the disappointing game at Stockport we repeated our generally poor batting display at home. As already mentioned with the exception of Gary no one else batted to their capability. They let themselves down & their team mates. With a great sense of hindsight, if we'd accumulated another 15-20 runs in the 30 balls we didnt use, we would have been in with a shout--Disley were definitely getting worried when we reduced them to 55 for 6.

Man of the Match....After what I've just said above there can be only one candidate today, for his all round performance it has to be Gary Sundve.

THE SUN SHINES ON SUNLIGHT AGAIN-- 23rd JULY

After our morning performanace against Disley, I wasnt sure whether it was now a good idea to welcome a Runcorn under 15 side to our ground for a game in the North Cheshire JCA.

This year with us entering a side in the Cheshire Junior League our games in the North Cheshire were designed to give those lads who may not have had many chances to play, an opportunity for a game. Like with most things it was a good intention but with holidays & a broken arm, the side I'd selected on paper went out of the window. In its place we had an invitational XI made up of some of the up & coming youth of this club.

Our side was made up of 5 under 14's, 3 under 13's, 2 under 12's & an under 11. We faced a Runcorn side which whilst only having 10 was made up of some big lads and when Mat Howard captaining the side for the first time won the toss, elected to bat and then I saw their opening bowlers I started to doubt that asking some of the youngsters may not have been a good idea. ( I heard later that some of the youngsters when they saw the opening bowlers were in total agreement with me)

We had a batting order that tried to protect the more inexperienced lads but still trying to not make it too top heavy. We opened with Mat H & Nathan, the bowlers looked big & fast & I was glad I was only the umpire. Nathan hit a nice 4 off his legs before being bowled which brought Ronan Duffy to the crease. For those who don't know Ronan, he's only an under 13 but looking at him I dont quite know what his parents feed him on but I'm glad I don't have to pay for it, he certainly didnt look out of place.

Mat H, after giving a 1/2 chance in the 1st over when he gloved one past the 'wickie', was controlling the inning and both lads were hitting the ball nicely until Ronan played round the only ball I saw that cut back & took out his off stump. Jamie now had his chance and again batted sensibly, giving most of the strike to Mat.

Mat had reached 23 when Jamie was bowled and John B came to the wicket---the way John batted you wouldnt have believed it was the same lad who'd played this morning. As Runcorn changed their bowlers looking for a breakthrough the 2 lads batted with a great deal of maturity.

The highlight of Mat H's innings was when he opened the face of his bat & directed a short pitched ball over the slip area to the boundary. Even the Runcorn fielder closest to me was saying what a good shot. Mat reached his 50 with his 6th 4 & retired on 53.

I was now a little worried as David Neilsen-Scott came to the wicket, I'd heard he was good but being only 11 I wasnt sure how he'd cope with the bowling. With the help of John, encouraging him all the way, I shouldnt have worried as David played like a professional. In fact at times it was almost like a coaching session as he played every shot correctly and had reached 13 by the end of the innings with John out off the last ball for a very well made 32.

The 2 scorers were in deep conversation as we left the field and after a couple of re-counts announced we'd scored 132 for 4 off our 25 overs. Now it was our turn in the field and more importantly Mat H's turn to captain the side & harness the bowlers.

He opened with Ronan who picked up a wicket in his first over thanks to a nice catch down the leg side from his bowling partner Mat Browning. Mat B himself then got into the act when he bowled the No. 3--reducing Runcorn to 17 for 2 off 4 overs. Jamie C was now brought into the attack, bowling a very tight line getting a wicket thanks to a fine catch in the deep by Andy Black. Arron 'Azza' Smith now got his chance bowling a couple of nice overs, followed by Stephen Scott on his debut for any Port Sunlight side.

Jamie having picked up his 2nd wicket in the 9th over helping to reduce Runcorn to 33 for 5 was replaced by David Neilsen-Scott who had a couple of very tidy overs. Andy Black went for 15 off his 2 overs but his figures didnt do his bowling justice whilst Jonathan Morris's 2 overs of spin went for 17 (2 poorer deliveries affecting his total).

Nathan had his chance but went for a few which set up the game nicely -- Runcorn were 103 for 5 after 19 overs but their opener had had to retire on 50. Mat H looked at his options, Runcorn needed 30 off 6 & decided to turn his arm over. He bowled a good line only going for 3 runs but with 4 byes Runcorn were still on target. Jamie came back on restricting them to only 3. Mat H then made the breakthrough followed by Jamie who with the help of John B. got into the act..119 for 7.

With only 2 overs left David N-S was brought back on only going for 2 --Runcorn now need 12 off 6 balls--Ronan was thrown the ball & it went as follows--dot ball, 2, wide, Mat H takes a catch which brought the opener back, single, wide ---they now need 7 off 2 balls...the opener was run out going for a 2nd run--Runcorn was all out for 127.

Thoughts of The Day.....After the last couple of Under 15 games, this game was a pleasure to be involved in--every lad was keen & gave 100%. The younger lads aquitted themsleves every well, I hope they enjoyed the game. Mat Howard captained the side very well with the help of stand-in wicket keeper John Barrett. He encouraged the side at all times & lead by example. Every lad can take something positive from the game but I have to say that David Neilsen-Scott looked as if he'd been playing at this level all season.

Man Of The Match--- after the performance that I watched from the umpire's position, it would be unfair to choose one player over another.

Whilst I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Julia Barrett for helping with preparing the food & Paul Morris for scoring the last innings --On this occasion the 'Man' of the Match (Day) is someone who didnt bowl a ball or score a run but without whom this game & the previous one wouldnt have been such a success.--it's someone who organised the food for both games & then when just sitting around having a break also scored our innings this afternoon...thanks Sue for all your help---I told you you'd enjoy getting a little involved with a cricket club.

SUNLIGHT BLOW IT AT WARRINGTON--4th JUNE

Apologises for the brief report, original somehow got lost.

Warrington batted first & scored 112 for 5 off 25 overs. We bowled & fielded quite well, only giving away 10 extras.

Port Sunlight in their reply got off to a terrible start, 4 out of the first 5 batsmen got ducks & we were 8 for 4. Despite some decent batting from Lewis R & Mat G who got themselves started only to then give their wickets, we were still up the creek without a paddle.

At this point Owen Ford came to the wicket, batting lower down the order because of illness, he proceeded to show the rest of the team how we should have batted.

Going into the last over we need 4 runs to win but Owen was on 39 n.o. & the rules state a batsman has to retire when he reaches 40 even if that finishes the game....simple Owen was facing the last over, all he needed to do was hit a four ( well it seemed easy from the scorers box)..despite best efforts it didnt happen--Owen was run out & we lost by 3 runs

SUNLIGHT TAKE THE SHORT TRIP TO CASTROL --11th JUNE

Sunlight took a Under 14 side to play Castrol on an extremely warm Sunday afternoon, we also welcomed to our side 2 lads from the Under 13's--Mat Browning & Azza Smith.

Before we opened our reply I asked for volunteers--only to be inundated with requests for people to bat at No. 11--so we opened with Mat Howard & 'Mellon' who unfortunately didnt last long....Sean came to the wicket to keep Mat company as he proceeded to play extremely well. The lads batted very sensibly & reached 103 for 2 off 19 overs.
