History of the Rose and Crown
There were two Inns in Bebington as far back as 1561, one of which stood on the present site. The present pub was run by Samual Birch in 1850 who also happened to be the butcher. It was bought by Joseph Mayer in 1860 who installed John and Mary Hannon as the Landlord and Landlady. Mary continued to run the pub after her husbands death in 1879. Mayer who lived next door in Pennant House is more famous for building Mayer Hall and Library and of course Mayer Park had quite an influence on the quiet village of Bebington. The picture below shows the pub in 1890 at the time of Mary Hannon. The building to the left is the Horse and Carriage business of Samuel Birch. Much handier than Bebington Taxis I think. The stone above the door bearing the date 1732 and the initials W.H.G is something of a mystery but is thought to have come from another building. I am always on the lookout for more information and will update this page with anything else I can find out. If you know anything please let me know using the Guestbook or E-Mail link below. | |
