Sale Choral Society
Sale Choral Society is a mixed choir of around 60 members. The repertoire is largely traditional choral works. The Society performs four major concerts a year, in addition to others for charity.
In recent years, performances have taken place at the RNCM, Manchester Town Hall and Manchester Cathedral, and the choir has joined with other choirs for concerts in Scandinavia, Isle of Man and New York.
However, the choir also remains true to its roots with most concerts taking place in Sale.

Our History
Sale Choral Society was founded in October 1907 as Sale and District Musical Society under the leadership of Alfred Higson and first performed in March 2008. It quickly became a successful choir, appearing in choral competitions and at music festivals, with numerous awards being gained.
In 1960 Alfred Higson retired and was succeeded by his son Edward. During the following years the society's emphasis changed as recitals gradually took over from competitions. Since 1969 when Michael English became Musical Director, the Society has concentrated on performing a mixture of sacred oratorios and secular choral works.
On Michael English's retirement in 1982, Russell Medley became Musical Director. In 1989 the choir changed its name to Sale Choral Society. |
Musical Director
Russell Medley was born in Cheshire and is a graduate of the RNCM. He has been the Musical Director of Sale Choral Society, since 1983, having been accompanist since 1972.
The majority of his experience has been in the accompaniment of singers and he has travelled widely throughout the UK. He is presently senior repetiteur in the Opera Department of the RNCM.
He is able to find excellent soloists from amongst his students to sing at our concerts.
