Welcome
Welcome to St Alban’s Roman Catholic Church, Warrington. The church is situated on Bewsey Street, quite close to the Town Centre and the Golden Square shopping centre. Being the first Roman Catholic parish in the town it is sometimes known as the “mother church” of the Catholics of Warrington since other parishes have grown out of this foundation. Having been founded in 1772 by the Benedictine monks of Ampleforth, it is now in the care of secular priests of the archdiocese of Liverpool. Many Catholic families throughout Warrington can trace their family connections to this parish where the registers of Baptism Marriage and Confirmation go back to 1774. [All the early records and information are available from the Records Office in Preston]
Up to just over 20 years ago the parish was thriving on the close-knit community of terraced houses in the vicinity of the church. Now, sadly it has been replaced by much industrial development leaving only a few houses and flats nearby. Nevertheless, the people of Bewsey and Dallam still take great pride in being part of the traditional community of St Alban’s parish.
The worshipping community is now comprised of people from further afield including those living in the relatively new districts of Old Hall, Callands and Westbrook. The interlinking with Sacred Heart parish is very significant as the priests of St Alban’s now have the “cura animarum” (care of souls) for both parishes.
