Newsletter December 2010

NEWSLETTER December 2010.

Hazel Pryor.
December 2010.

Dear Member
Best wishes for a Happy New Year, and here's hoping you had a warm and peaceful Christmas.
This should reach you just before our first meeting of 2011, on 4th January, when David Hill will talk about 'Great Comedians'.
Northwest in Bloom - Timperley did well in the 2010 'In Bloom' competition. There are now different grades awarded: Moss Park Gardens and Larkhill were graded "Developing" while Broomwood Park is "Thriving". We look forward to a fresh display of daffodils on Larkhill as more bulbs were planted (2-3 sacks-fill) and a few volunteers have been tending the planters in the village, which got overgrown with duckweed.
Larkhill Christmas Concert - We regret the break-up of Timperley Band, but we were pleased to have the Glossop Old Band this year, and hopefully will be able to book them again. There were several familiar faces in the band, and a group of ex-Timperley members played one evening at the Quarry Bank.
2010 was the centenary of the Village Club (Parish Rooms) on Stockport Road. We still have copies of a reprint of the Souvenir 'Handbook to the Bazaar' held at the club in 1910 - for sale (funds going to Timperley Parish, contact Hazel).
New Website - The society has a new website address - much easier to remember -
www.timperleycivicsociety.org.uk This will take you direct to the Communigate page. Thank you to Mark who sorted this out and to Alan who has been uploading useful lists of establishments/facilities in Timperley, e.g. schools, pharmacists. We hope these will be useful to anyone new to the district. Alan is also trying to add details of forthcoming events or recent news, so if you know of anything please pass it along.
Have you seen the Messenger's 'Timperley District' page on its website?
Mark is in charge of adding stories regularly. You can add comments, so have a look and have your say:

Recent (and not so recent) meetings and events
Timperley Country Fair was a very successful opportunity to publicise the Society. Committee members chatted with numerous members of the public, explaining the work the Society does. We recruited new members and sold walks leaflets and greetings cards.

May 2010 visit to the site of Timperiey Old Hall - Derek Pierce from STAG
in the dig explaining the archaeology of the moated site. Our meeting on 3rd May will tell the full story of Timperley Hall. See below.

Mary Eastwood's talk at the AGM on the Timperley Community Orchard was very interesting and the apple tasting thoroughly appreciated. Mary also showed the important relationship with local beekeepers. Without the bees there would be no apples and without the blossom - no bees!
Newhaven Extra Care Home was the topic for our November talk by Roger Cairns from Trafford Housing Trust. This was very informative with a good turnout and interested questioning.
December's open meeting 'Christmas Day in the Workhouse' by Chris Makepeace gave us insight into the food given to the poor, in contrast to the mince pies and Mark's punch (!) that followed the talk.
Planning Applications - These are now sent out by email to three of the committee, so we get the lists sooner than by post. Recent plans in Timperley have been mostly for individual extensions. Silver Wings Club site on Clay Lane - the application has been passed for a sports club, with indoor swimming pool and games pitches. Comments had been made about traffic and disturbance to wildlife.
Members of the committee have attended various events including Newhaven 'Community Day' on 29th Oct, and the Trafford Citizen's debate on cost cutting.
Have you noticed the painting of Frank Sidebottom on the front of Timperley Aquatics? No news yet about where his statue will be sited.
Timperley Walk no.4: "Brooks, Woods and Secret Agents" is available, along with the first three walks.
More Timperley news is available from Broomwood Community Association website -www.broomwoodvoice.com Don't forget Timperley Trekkers walk out on Wednesdays, starting from the Broomwood - check posters for dates.
