Winsford United vs. Leek CSOB 6th December 2006 Match report by Aaron Flanagan
After a strange ending to Saturday’s game, this replay went ahead despite lots of rain but to an extent, doing Winsford a favour. Key player Neil Marsh would now be back for Saturday’s league encounter with Ashton Town, and skipper Mark Quinn for next Tuesdays Mid-Cheshire cup semi-final at Witton. But the Witton game could be our last in a cup competition this year, if the blues could not pull off a good result tonight.
Winsford were looking to get the game over and done with early today, and the 6th minute saw the scoring for the night begin. Miranda knocked a ball into the middle and Dave Hanlon had the easiest of finishes, slotting the ball into the corner. Les Miranda had his first good chance of the game on 20 minutes, but his shot was saved by the leg of the keeper, and Dave Hanlon could not get to the rebound quick enough, and the defender cleared away. Wayward shots from Miranda, Hanlon, Hopley and Duckworth after this did not trouble keeper James Hall to a large extent. The half hour saw Leek make a come-back in a bizarre manner. A long ball that cleared both defenders and attackers dropped to a surprised Iain Stanton who attempted to clear with his left foot but only succeeded in directing the ball past a shocked Danny Morton. Stanno came back quickly though, knocking a brilliant ball into the head of Danny Topping whose header forced a great save out of Hall. Just before the break, Winsford got themselves in front for the second time in the game. Lee Duckworth’s shot was parried into the path of Dave Hanlon who put the ball into the open net.
The second half started with Jake Johnson stunning Winsford again. After some heroics in goal for the last 20 minutes on Saturday, he took it upon himself to step inside Phil Porter and clip the ball beyond Winsford keeper Danny Morton. The second goal of the half and Winsford’s 3rd of the day was the goal of the game. A corner by Dave Hanlon eventually made its way to Danny Jarrett on the edge who volleyed the ball into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. A trio of substitutions saw Les ‘legend’ Miranda, Phil Porter and Duckworth replaced by Dave Tasker, Chris Melia and Paul Booth. With 75 on the clock, a penalty was awarded for Dave Tasker being taken down in the area, and it was a perfect opportunity for Dave Hanlon to score his 3rd of the game. He sent the keeper the wrong way, and put him 3rd top goal scorer in NWCFL Division 2 this season. The last 2 minutes was almost the ‘Chris Melia show’. A clever run through a few defenders saw his 88th minute shot bobble onto the post. But just one minute later, he put the miss right when a quality ball in by Hopley was met by Melia’s diving head which made the score at the final whistle 5-2.
A difficult game played in difficult conditions, but the return of Phil Porter, leading the side today, and a few quality goals saw Winsford through to the Quarter final of the competition, with a tie at home to either Ashton Town or Cheadle awaiting.

Leek CSOB vs. Winsford United 2nd December 2006 Match report by Aaron Flanagan
Winsford have been unable to get a cup run going this season, with only the Mid-Cheshire cup and Division 2 trophy to play for. Today was the day of the D2 Trophy, and were drawn away from home to Leek CSOB, but with ground owners Leek Town having a home game on the date, the Barton Stadium was the location for this game, and the replay if one was needed.
It was Winsford who started the stronger team, getting the ball into the area numerous times in the first 10 minutes but not forcing any real threat on goalkeeper Gavin Deaville. 15 minutes in and Dave Hanlon had a chance to put the blues in front. A perfect ball in by Duckworth saw Dave Hanlon’s header go over the bar. Shortly afterwards Dave Hanlon knocked a sneaky free kick past the Leek defenders and the legend Les Miranda had all the time in the world to head the ball past a helpless Deaville. Miranda has now scored 6 goals in 7 games since returning to the club. Confidence appeared to grow throughout the Winsford team after that and Rob Hopley and Les Miranda had 2 close chances, in which both players put the ball past the far post. 35 minutes and it was time for Leek to challenge the Blues backline for the first time. The ball made its way to Leek’s top marksmen Anthony Tarr, who made no mistake in curling the ball away from Danny Morton, and into the back of the net for a shock equaliser.
The second half took 10 minutes before Winsford could challenge Leek again. Dave Hanlon knocked a ball in, and Danny Topping had an open net to head the ball into for his first goal for the blues, but keeper Deaville came out of no-where with a great save, tipping Toppings header over the bar. 69 minutes past, and Winsford received what should have been the incident that would have turned the game head over heals, as Les Miranda was taken down in the penalty area by the goalkeeper, giving the referee no option but to send Gavin Deaville off, who’s goalkeeping duty’s were taken on by Jake Johnson. Les Miranda had to be subbed for the tackle, as he was unable to continue, but was replaced by Scott Weir. Back to the penalty, and Dave Hanlon had no trouble in drilling the ball past the stand-in keeper. The last 20 minutes saw Winsford shoot from wherever they could. ‘Ducko’ hit a volley that was saved by Johnson’s foot, and Dave Hanlon hit 2 belters forcing a couple more brilliant saves from the midfielder. Makes you wonder why Leek didn’t play him in net in the first place! An 84th minute sub saw the introduction of forward Dave Tasker, who signed from Mid-Cheshire side Barnton earlier in the week. Leek managed to hit their second shot of the game just minutes afterwards when a powerful drive saw Danny Morton let the ball come back off his chest to poacher Tarr, who scored his second of the game.
With the 90 minutes all over, the players and clubs officials were expecting the required 30 minutes additional time, when the referee decided enough was enough and that we would all have to return to the Barton Stadium on Wednesday night. A strange and ultimately incorrect decision by the referee that considering Leek were down to 10 men removed any advantage we might have gained during extra time.
Final score: Leek CSOB 2-2 Winsford Utd.

Blackpool Mechanics vs Winsford Utd 18th November 2006
Match Report by Aaron Flanagan
Over recent years, Blackpool Mechanics have been the ‘bogey team’ for the blues. Today was the first chance under the management of Chris Wilcock and John Flanagan to put the record straight, but it was not going to be easy as strong winds dominated the proceedings throughout the game.
A very slow start to the game saw the first shot come in the 16th minute. Mark Quinn received the ball on the edge of the area but volleyed the ball high over the bar. The 33rd minute saw the next bit of notable action when Les Miranda took the ball into the Mechanics area and was taken down by the Blackpool keeper Andrew Moffatt. With Chris Melia on the bench for the game, Neil Marsh stepped up and drilled the ball to the same corner as he did against Daisy Hill, but keeper Moffatt saw it coming and was quick down into the corner to save. Despite the penalty miss, the blues kept their heads up and it soon paid off. 6 minutes before the end of the first period, Rob Hopley broke forward and his shot was parried by the keeper’s foot and Les Miranda followed up by slotting the ball into the open net. After his celebration on Wednesday at Silsden, we were expecting something spectacular today. Did we get it? No.
Second half almost had a goal from blues full back Iain Stanton. A clearance that got drifted with the wind towards the penalty area bounced over the goal keeper and went inches wide. 52 minutes saw the legend strike again. Danny Topping played the ball onto Mark Quinn who set off Duckworth down the left. ‘Ducko’ passed the ball square across goal and Miranda was lurking like a typical striker to pass the ball into the goal, for his 5th in 6 games. Winsford made sure the Blackpool hoodoo was ended on 66 minutes when the second penalty of the game was awarded. Shouts for Les Miranda to take it fell on deaf ears as he gave Dave Hanlon a birthday treat. Hanlon sent the keeper the wrong way, and the ball flew into the corner. Two of the blues recent casualties got a run out for the last 20. Les Miranda and Rob Hopley made way for goal scoring duo Chris Melia and Scott Weir. Blackpool finally decided to make an impact on the game when on 77 minutes with their first real shot of the game, and what a cracker it was. A long range effort saw Danny Morton motionless and the ball strike the bar. The shot did not affect Dave Hanlon though, who got straight on with proceedings, and dribbled the ball into the area but fired wide. Just as we thought the game was ending, a silly free kick was given on the edge of the blues box and Matthew Muscroft stepped up. A curling left foot saw Danny Morton with no chance as the ball glided perfectly into the top corner. A consolation was all it was though, as the ref blew for the full time whistle almost immediately after the restart.
The hoodoo was ended and the blues still stay 6 points clear at the top of the table. With performances like this and not giving the opponents a shot until the 77th minute, you can be sure that come the end of the season, Winsford won’t be far away!
Final Score: Blackpool Mechanics 1-3 Winsford Utd WUFC TEAM: 1. DANNY MORTON 2. DANNY JARRETT 3. IAIN STANTON 4. MARK QUINN (CAPT) 5. MIKE ASTON 6. NEIL MARSH 7. DAVE HANLON 8. DANNY TOPPING 9. ROB HOPLEY 10. LEGEND LES MIRANDA 11. LEE DUCKWORTH 12. CHRIS MELIA 14. SCOTT WEIR 15. CHRIS WILCOCK.

League cup double
Match reports by Aaron Flanagan
Winsford United vs. Silsden (11th November 2006) In the past two cup games against higher league opposition, the blues were unable to get a result. The first was a game in which we should have won at Congleton in the FA cup, where we got knocked out 1-0. The second was a trip to Atherton Collieries, in which the opponents were just too much for Winsford to handle, and a 4-0 result was one that we couldn’t complain about. Could it be 3rd time lucky for the Blues?
Silsden started the game as the stronger team, when just 3 minutes in, Danny McNulty picked up the ball off a throw, and his shot was deflected over the bar. The resulting corner came right through the defenders, and an unmarked striker was able to head the ball, but it luckily came off the bar, and Danny Morton was straight to the rescue. It then just took another 7 minutes for Silsden to make another break. Andy Holden caught the ball on the bounce and was able to chip the ball over the helpless Winsford keeper. Despite Mike Aston’s attempt to get back to stop the ball, the deadlock was broken, and a slow Winsford start was costly. The first 20 minutes were made even worse for the blues when skipper Mark Quinn was dismissed for apparently stamping on a player who had clearly targeted him from the start of the game. The sending off may have been a spark for a Winsford comeback, as Rob Hopley stormed down the wing, however the ball across was steered wide by Les Miranda. Silsden were not a team to give up though, as they hit the woodwork for the second time in the game with a long-range shot. The attempt was eventually caught by Danny Morton. A few more Silsden attempts were taken away by the strong winds, and the blues keeper was not troubled too much. Morton made one of his best saves in a Winsford shirt though, on 38 minutes, when a shot was heading for an open net, an acrobatic dive by the in form keeper kept the scoreline 1-0. A few Winsford chances ended the half, but none of them troubled the Silsden keeper Martin Foulger.
The start of the second half was the story of a legendary left foot on a legendary player. Winger Lee Duckworth laid the ball off to Rob Hopley who put it on a plate for the legend that is Les Miranda, who drilled the ball into the corner of the net. Silsden began to cause a few problems for the blues. Chris Simpson with a volley resulting in another acrobatic save by Danny Morton. It was then Mark Bentham’s turn to have a go with one header going wide and an effort heading over the bar. The home team were the stronger team football wise throughout the second period, with most of the chances from here on in going to the blues. One of these chances was with 20 minutes left in normal time. Hopley received the ball out on the left and found his way past a few defenders and into the area. He then knocked the ball into the path of Les Miranda who unfortunately put the ball over the bar. The blues made a double change a minute afterwards, with Les Miranda and Lee Duckworth being replaced by Gareth Baker and Adam Oakes. Baker making his third appearance, but his home debut, and Oakes a former Stockport County man, making his first. With a matter of minutes remaining before the start of extra time, Danny Jarrett ran forward down the right wing, and his final shot was fired just past the far post. There were no more real opportunities in normal play, and the ref blew for the start of extra time.
Winsford again dictated the tempo of the half. Starting with a Dave Hanlon ball into the left, which met Rob Hopley, who fired the ball past the post. It took just 2 minutes for WUFC to get their second chance. Gareth Baker released down the left, and laid the ball for Danny Topping, whose shot hit a defender and a corner was given. It took Silsden the whole 15 minutes of the first half of extra time to get a shot on goal. The ball was played through the blues backline but the shot was hit wide past Danny Morton’s post.
Final period of play saw the Winsford front men being a bit selfish with some shots. One effort by Dave Hanlon went over and one by Rob Hopley wide. Both times the players could have passed, but each went for the glory.
There is a funny thing in football where if you have a really good game, you tend to end up making a costly mistake, and this was exactly the case for Danny Morton as Winsford thought the game was heading to a replay, disaster struck. Chris Simpson slightly overplayed the ball on a promising Silsden break. Morton came out to kick the ball but missed it, and the ball carried on rolling. Simpson got behind the keeper and slotted the ball into the open goal. With just two minutes remaining Winsford had to do something quick. It took until the 3rd minute of added time for that something special to come. Neil Marsh struck the ball from 35 yards, and Martin Foulger was only able to parry. Dave Hanlon was on hand to slot the loose ball into the net and send Winsford to Silsden for a replay.
On the whole a very exciting game and playing with 10 men for the better part of the game really showed Silsden what Winsford can do when they play as a unit. A cold Wednesday night is to be the stage for the replay, which was worthily earned by both sides. News that the winner of that replay will be at home to Atherton LR in the next round will make everyone at Winsford even more determined to get the required result so we can have a ‘grudge match’ in later January.

Silsden vs. Winsford United (15th November 2006)
Two last gasp incidents at the Barton Stadium last Saturday saw this replay set up in Yorkshire. A home tie against Atherton LR would be the reward for the winners. It was a cold, wet and windy night at the rugby ground. The pitch wasn’t of great standards and was holding a bit of water from the rain earlier, so it was bound to be a tricky test for the blues.
A slow start to the game put next to no pressure on both goals. Silsden had the better of the chances, but nothing to make Danny Morton restless in his goal. The first good chance of the game came on 18 minutes when Dave Hanlon knocked a ball in from the right but Les Miranda was only able to head the ball into the keeper’s hands. A quick spell of end to end play saw Silsden captain Michael Rosser, who switched from centre half to centre forward for the game, hit a shot which Morton could pounce on. Mark Quinn got the ball back instantly and got a shot in that didn’t trouble Martin Foulger in the Silsden net. Winsford’s best move of the half soon followed when Hanlon and Miranda linked up and a ball in saw a good effort by Mark Quinn force the keeper to parry the ball to his right hand post. From the resulting corner, Mark Quinn received the ball on the edge of the box and volleyed the ball high and wide. The end-to-end action continued when Silsden’s Harry Thompson received the ball after 2 crosses and was able to slot the ball into the net on the half hour mark. The blues had one chance to come back before the break, when Les Miranda took two shots which got stopped and a final Danny Topping effort was put behind the net by the keeper.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first. The first chance came on 55 minutes where Les Miranda’s volley went high over the bar after a cross by Lee Duckworth. A substitution saw the return of a key striker Scott Weir, who replaced Gareth Baker who had started his first game for Winsford. The rather uneventful game continued and it took Dave Hanlon to excite things. A good jinky run into the area saw the keeper make a diving save. Les Miranda changed the course of the game on 70 minutes. A stunning run saw him glide past two defenders and slot the ball past the helpless keeper. He ran over to the corner flag and celebrated by using the corner flag as a guitar. (We look forward to seeing his next one) The blues lead only lasted 4 minutes, when Harry Thompson could just easily run past the blues backline and slot the ball past Danny Morton. All the blues efforts to get back seem to have gone to waste. Two more subs were made. Danny Osborne replacing Lee Duckworth and Adam Oakes replacing Les Miranda. The 81st minute saw Neil Marsh dismissed for a second bookable offence. The defender came in and won the ball but caught the man, and the ref saw it was as dangerous play. A refereeing calamity put Winsford out of the League cup when Danny Osborne had the ball over the goal line twice in a minute. One attempt that was cleared from behind the line which the officials did not see, but the blues kept on battling by playing another ball into the area and Ozzy headed the ball past two defenders on the line. Osborne went off to celebrate and the referee had pointed back at the centre spot for the restart. As soon as the celebrating was over, we noticed the linesman had his flag up signalling for offside. There was a huge uproar from the fans and management bench as the linesman had over-turned a decision already made by the ref. The annoying thing is that they had two people on the line, and the offside was still given.
Once the full time whistle went the Winsford players left the pitch knowing that they should be playing extra time at that moment. A refereeing calamity cost us a possible place in the 3rd round of the cup. A sad thought to drive 2 hours back down the road with, but hey, that’s football for you!

Daisy Hill 0-3 Winsford Utd (4/11/06) *_*Match report by Aaron Flanagan. (aged 14 :-) )*_* *_Daisy Hill's recent appearance in pink at the Barton Stadium, made me think that a trip to a team with a name such as Daisy Hill may be an easy run out for the blues. How very wrong I was when a young, but physically strong Daisy Hill side troubled us throughout the game. The first 10 minutes of the game was end to end, starting with an early Winsford corner that was met by a poor header from Chris Melia. Daisy Hill had a good break soon after with central midfielder Rob Houghton firing over. The game started with a physical approach, which resulted in an early booking for Daisy's Danny Williams after a silly incident with Winsford fullback Mike Aston. Winsford, wearing an eye-catching orange kit, started to take control from here on in, with Dave Hanlon heading just over and a Chris Melia attempt kept out by the boot of Daisy Hill keeper Steve Moore. Chances seemed to keep on coming for Winsford, and it appeared a goal was soon to come. A pacy break by big Winsford no.9 Rob Hopley saw the ball reach Lee Duckworth who jinked his way into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the far side of the net for his 3rd goal in 3 games. Play re-started quickly and maybe a bit too quickly for Winsford's top marksmen Chris Melia. A pulled thigh muscle was enough to force boss Chris Willcock to make an unwanted early substitution, which saw Les Miranda (the Legend) introduced after 20 mins following his recent return to the blues. Daisy's best chance of the half soon followed when experienced striker Tomasz Gronowski tried to chip the ball over Danny Morton, but the Winsford keeper was out quick enough to palm the ball away. With 5 minutes remaining in the first period, Daisy Hill pushed forward again with a shot from Rob Houghton forcing a good save out of the in-form Winsford keeper. Momentum was quickly regained by Winsford with a clever diagonal ball by Iain Stanton playing Rob Hopley in only to see his early strike miss the target by inches. The second half began with Daisy Hill dictating the early tempo but without really threatening the visitors goal. One long-range effort by striker Steve Farrell was caught with ease by the Winsford keeper, and a separate rebounded shot going just over the bar. 10 minutes into the second half and Winsford had a second injury to deal with. David Brocklehurst, who injured his back, was replaced by pacy forward Gareth Baker, with Lee Duckworth reverting to centre-half. A rather scrappy second half saw both defences dominating and many passes going astray. Winsford's first good chance of the half came after 64 minutes, when a ball in by no.7 Dave Hanlon was met by Les Miranda whose header drifted wide. Another good attacking move saw Les Miranda involved again. This time hitting the ball into the side netting. With only 10 remaining on the clock, Daisy Hill fancied their chances with the league leaders. A good ball into the box was not met by a very good header, and an easy save was forced out of Danny Morton. Daisy's Danny Williams then used some tricky footwork to 'juggle' his way past 3 defenders and the keeper. Luckily for the blues, Neil Marsh was on the line for the block and the loose ball was quickly pounced on by Morton. With one minute to go, a quick break by Winsford’s star man on the day, Danny Topping saw him tripped whilst in the penalty area by Steve Obertelli, who received his marching orders for the challenge. With Melia on the side lines, stand-in penalty taker Neil Marsh drilled the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season, and Winsford’s second on the day. A 91st minute corner saw the ball headed onto the post by Miranda and into the path of in-form Rob Hopley, who drilled the ball into the back of the net. On the whole it was a good day out with chants such as 'Come on Daisy' making me smile faintly throughout the game. A well earned 3 points but a shoreline that somewhat flattered us and didn't reflect the hard work put in by Daisy's kids. Final Score: Daisy Hill 0-3 Winsford United.
Winsford United –v- Holker Old Boys Saturday 28/10/06
United celebrated going to the top of the pile in style today by putting seven past Holker’s custodian, Sam Stephen. “They look up for it”, were the words from one interested observer just during the warm up, so it was obvious even to an impartial fan that we intend to stay on top! Winsford went straight on the attack with Stanton, Quinn and Hopley all having decent chances including one that had to be cleared off the line. It was left to Lee Duckworth to grab the first goal, closely followed by Dave Hanlon with Lee getting his second only 5 minutes later. Rob Hopley had the next chance but his shot went wide of the post. Chris Melia had to go one better than anybody else and actually went round the keeper twice before putting the ball in the net. Hopley finally got his reward for all his hard work by scoring the fifth goal for the Blues. So at the start of the second half we were 5-0 up so obviously the game was over? Not a chance of that, Holker changed their formation to 4-4-2 and started to give United a bit of trouble. Callum Livingstone gave the visitors a lifeline when he slipped the ball under the body of Danny Morton. Still, no big deal, until Paul Southward got a second for them. Time to start worrying, except for the fact that Danny Jarret got the ball straight from the restart and blasted it past the hapless Sam Stephen. The final word was left to new boy? Les Miranda. He collected a rebound from Danny Topping’s shot and slipped it into the empty net to settle everyone’s nerves. Final Score: - Winsford Utd 7 Holker Old Boys 2 Winsford United: - 1 Danny Morton, 2 Mike Aston, 3 Iain Stanton, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 David Brocklehurst, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Dave Hanlon, 8 Danny Topping, 9 Chris Melia, 10 Rob Hopley, 11 Lee Duckworth, 12 Danny Osborne, 14 Danny Jarrett, 15 Les Miranda. Runcorn Linnets –v- Winsford United Tuesday 24th October 2006
This eagerly awaited top of the league clash, delivered all the excitement and flowing football anyone could have hoped for. Both sides entered the arena determined to leave as the victors. Luckily for us, Blues proved to just have the edge on the night. It was the Linnets defensive pairing that had the first chances of the night, with both Mark Phillips and Paul Parle producing long shots within the first five minutes. With Mark Quinn running the midfield, both Dave Hanlon and Rob Hopley were able to run at the opposition. It was Hanlon who broke the deadlock with a 25-yard screamer just on the half hour. With just one minute of the half left Thomas Lamb grabbed the equalizer when he converted a corner by blasting it through a crowded goal area. Winsford were like little terriers all over the pitch, for this game they proved they could get involved with the best teams and come out on top. Into the second period both sides carried on the good work from the first half. Rob Hopley caused havoc up front and then seconds later was back in defence showing all the enthusiasm it will need to win this league. Chris Melia thought he had got the second goal only to see it bounce back off the keepers legs, it went straight to Hopley who happily consigned it to the back of the net. The flurry of substitutes in the last quarter of an hour did nothing to harm the excitement of the game, but it was still an anxious end to the game only relieved when the final whistle went. It still took a few moments however before we all realized, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE! Final Score: - Runcorn Linnets 1 Winsford Utd 2 Winsford Utd: - 1 Danny Morton, 2 Phil Porter, 3 Iain Stanton, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 Lee Duckworth, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Dave Hanlon, 8 Danny Jarrett, 9 Chris Melia, 10 Rob Hopley, 11 Danny Topping, 12 Scott Taylor, 14 Les Miranda, 16 Gareth Baker. Winsford United –v- Holker Old Boys 23/08/06 Winsford produced a competent if unexceptional win. Without having to really overstretch themselves, the Blues eased into the next round of the FA Vase. Once again we had the lions share of the game and controlled the middle of the park. Many chances were manufactured which led to three goals to take us to a meeting with Atherton Collieries in the next round. With the Holker defence too busy shouting for offside, Scott Weir pounced onto the rebound from Chris Melia’s shot to grab the lead for United. Both Melia and Weir came close with headers but the half closed with just the one goal scored. At the start of the second period it was Danny Topping’s turn to head just over the bar. It took another 14 minutes before Blues were able to get another goal. With a free kick from Dave Hanlon flashing across the goalmouth, Melia stretched out a foot to jab the ball home. Seconds after the restart, Hanlon once again danced into the area, but this time he was brought down to produce a penalty, which gave Melia his second of the afternoon. Holker proved that they had a sting when Danny Keenan outstripped Mike Aston and drove home a powerful shot to reduce the deficit. Robert Bruce thought he had scored a second but was devastated when Jamie Mottershead produced a fantastic save to push the ball to his own defender to clear it out. In injury time it was Topping’s turn to be disappointed when his shot was cleared off the line. Final Score: - Winsford Utd 3 Holker OB 1 Winsford: - 1 Jamie Mottershead, 2 Craig Robinson, 3 Mike Aston, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 Phil Porter, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Danny Topping, 8 Chris Melia, 9 Scott Weir, 10 Scott Taylor, 11 Dave Hanlon, 12 Rob Hopley, 14 Nigel Booth, 15 Paul Booth. Norton United –v- Winsford United 16/09/06 The first few minutes made all Blues fans very nervous, Norton started like a steam train. Luckily for us they soon ran out of steam. Jamie Mottershead had to show his alertness when Robert Adlington tested him from close range; he was of course well up to the task and stopped Norton’s one and only chance of the half. Rob Hopley and Dave Hanlon soon got into their stride and started pulling the home teams defence all over the field. However, although we had lots of possession and played some lovely football we hardly ever worried the goalkeeper. Until just after the half hour mark that is, Chris Melia headed the ball out to Dave Hanlon. Dave showed all his speed and guile by dancing around three players and rifling the ball home from 20 yards, to give Winsford the lead. After the break the home side once again pushed hard for the equaliser. Winsford had other ideas though, just 8 minutes into the second half saw Hopley’s shot saved by Dean Latham, only to see the ball rebound out to Chris Melia who smashed the ball home for United’s second. I don’t know what happened after this, whether we just relaxed or what, but once again we allowed the opposition back into the game. From a wasted corner the ball was lofted back into Winsford’s goal area and found Chris Pattison in acres of space. He had enough time to control the ball and pass it into the net. Norton decided to be just as benevolent when a misskick from Latham went straight to Scott Weir who poached the third goal by lobbing it straight back from all of 40 yards. Final Score: - Norton Utd 1 Winsford Utd 3 Winsford Utd: - 1 Jamie Mottershead, 2 Mike Aston, 3 Lee Duckworth, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 Phil Porter, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Danny Topping, 8 Chris Melia, 9 Rob Hopley, 10 Scott Taylor, 11 Dave Hanlon, 12 Scott Weir, 14 Chris Willcock, 16 Paul Booth. Winsford United –v- New Mills 09/09/06 The first 45 minutes passed largely without goalmouth incident. Blues had more of the game but without really troubling Joe Boyle in the Millers goal. Shots from Topping, Hanlon and Melia all went wide of the target, whilst the only strike by any of the opposition also went wide of the goal when Lee Morris beat the defenders to the ball but couldn’t find the net. The second half was a completely different ball game however. Scott Taylor’s cross from wide left bounced off a defender and fell kindly for Dave Hanlon to smash the ball home after only 6 minutes. A flurry of substitutions followed which gave both sides the attacking flair missing from the first half. Blues doubled their lead when Boyle raced off his line to try to clear the ball. Unfortunately for him it fell straight to Chris Melia, his 30-yard dipping cross hit the post and left Scott Weir with and open goal. Although the Millers tried to gain a foothold, Winsford denied them any strikes on goal to deservedly take all three points. Final Score: - Winsford Utd 2 New Mills 0 Winsford: - 1 Jamie Mottershead, 2 Phil Porter, 3 Mike Aston, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 Dave Chambers, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Danny Topping, 8 Chris Melia, 9 Rob Hopley, 10 Scott Taylor, 11 Dave Hanlon, 12 Scott Weir, 14 Lee Scanlon, 15 Ian Wilkinson. Winsford United –v- Daisy Hill 02/08/06 Winsford got back to winning ways with a 4-0 demolition of Daisy Hill here today. We only saw one goal in the first half however as Blues made us sweat for 80 minutes. Dave Hanlon was the first to show for the home side, he twisted and turned past three defenders before Scott Moore in the visitor’s goal gathered his tame shot. Seconds later he scraped the side of the netting with his next attempt. Then it was Rob Hopley’s turn to test the keeper, his shot was parried away by the keeper before he collected it on the second try. The first goal of the game went to Rob Hopley. Mark Quinn’s pinpoint cross was nodded past the keeper when Hopley out jumped everyone. Daisy Hill spent most of the game in their own half but they did manage to get the best out of the under worked Jamie Mottershead, when he was forced to acrobatically palm a goal bound shot from Chris Naylor over the bar. Three more goals came late in the second half, with Hopley leaving the defence standing and watching, Chris Melia was able to steal into the box to despatch the second for Blues. Seven minutes from the end, substitute Danny Topping raced down the wing before crossing the ball to Scott Taylor who grabbed the third goal of the game. Chris got the fourth goal himself, just seconds from the final whistle. He stooped to glance Danny Topping’s corner into the net past a static keeper. This is what should have happened last week, the difference this time was that the goals actually went in! Final Score: - Winsford Utd 4 Daisy Hill 0 Winsford: - 1 Jamie Mottershead, 2 Ian Wilkinson, 3 Phil Porter, 4 Mark Quinn (c), 5 Dave Chambers, 6 Neil Marsh, 7 Lee Scanlon, 8 Chris Melia, 9 Rob Hopley, 10 Scott Taylor, 11 Dave Hanlon, 12 Scott Weir, 14 Danny Topping, Paul Booth.
