___________________________
 | The weekend excavations went extremely well and the first results were very encouraging. The first task was to compare the Geofiz with what was extant under the top soil. This achieved very good results with the features of Trench 1 and Trench 2 matching almost perfectly with the Geofiz. On the Saturday we excavated Trench 1 near the original site and it was no surprise when a dark fill feature exposed a large sample of Romano British pottery. In other areas of the trench a good sample of Iron Age pot was removed. Only a small sample was taken from features that were otherwise left unexcavated. On each day we removed the turf, excavated with a small digger down to gravel level and then cleaned up the surface by hand. After taking samples, bagging up finds and recording the features we back-filled and replaced the turf all in one day.

 | AVAS WELCOMES YOU
AVAS is an active and friendly society, running vigorously since its foundation in 1974.
We promote interest in, and study of archaeology for all; encompassing surveys, conservation, excavation and compilation of reports. A meeting place for those with common interests.
Our membership is drawn from a diverse range of people comprised mainly of keen amateurs with a handful of professionals.
We are a well-respected society achieving high standards, with excellent facilities and abilities to introduce archaeology to the absolute beginner.
We have a first class winter lecture programme and organise site visits. An extensive library and archive is maintained for researchers and the less energetic. Finding out how our ancestors lived, worked and played in the Avon Valley is one of our goals. To achieve this we are actively involved in research, and fieldwork.

Excavation
| Piecing together a picture of the past is achieved by excavation. | |
|
Recording
| During excavation layers of history are peeled back. It is very important that records are kept, so that a chronology of phases of time can be distinguished. | |
|
Finds
| During excavations finds may be uncovered. | |
|
Post Excavation
| Post excavation processes reveal an understanding of past deposits. Finds are drawn in detail and analysed. The context of where finds are made, combined with excavation records help to build a picture of how a site was used, what happened to it over time and mans impact upon it. | |
|
Publication
| Publication of results is important in order to gain an understanding of a site and whether the artefacts found are of local origin or of a wider distribution. | |
|
Promotion 'Spreading the word'
| We strive to make people aware of the Societies activities in the Avon Valley and its archaeology. We mount displays at local and regional events. | |
|
The appeal of Archaeology
| Archaeology is available to all, both young and the not so young. It has an appeal to people from all walks of life. AVAS welcomes everyone with an interest in the past. | |
|
Visits
| We often visit sites and places which are archaeologically interesting. | |
