JOHN AND EMILY

My paternal Great-Grandfather, John Budden (Pictured above) was born in Romford near Verwood in the district of Cranborne, Dorset. . He was born on 28/3/1851 and his parents were John and Rachel ( nee Andrews).
On October 27th 1872, John married Emily Mary Joy at Holy Trinity, Bournemouth. His profession was given as a Dairyman.
Emily's father, William was deceased. Her uncle was Henry Joy who built two Bournemouth Arcades. Emily was born in 1849.
In the 1881 census, John and Emily were at Poole Road Hotel Stables, Holdenhurst.John was then a Coach Mail Contractor.
Two children had been born.
They were:-
Evelina-aged 5
Mary Beat-aged 3
When my Grandfather, Walter Garnet was born on 3rd December 1884, the address was given as West Station Mews and John was a Cab Proprietor.
In 1891 the family were at Leslie Estate.
Winton,Bournemouth.John was still a cab proprietor.
In 1901 the family were at 250,Wimborne Road, Winton,Bournemouth. John was then a Bus Proprietor. He died later that year on 29/10/1901 of Heart failure.
At present I have traced 8 children although one was stillborn. They were :-
Evelina-Baptised 17/10/1875
May Beat-Baptised 20/1/1878
Ada Louise-Baptised 1/9/1881
Emily Violet-Baptised 10/3/1887
Ethel Anne-Born 21/5/1889
Walter Garnet-Born 3/12/1884
Percival Albert-Died 11/6/1886
aged 7 weeks.
Stillborn female-13/10/1883

I would like to hear from anyone who may
know details of the transport business that John ran just before he died.

OTHER NAMES

Evelina( Pictured above) married William Cartwright in Pokesdown on 14th February 1898. They had a son Cyril Herbert Cartwright who was baptised on 9th April, 1898. William was a Bus conductor. She later married Charles Henry Miles and had eight children.

Ethel Anne married Louis Pittwood in Bournemouth in 1913 and died in 1988 aged 99.

Emily Violet married Hedley Edwin Kitcher in 1907.Hedley was a Stationer by trade and it is believed they had a business in the Triangle, Bournemouth.

May Beatrice married Frederick Victor Squire in Cardiff in 1900. In 1901 Frederick, May and their 5 month old son,Frederick were at 143,Gorse Lane, Swansea.Frederick was a Clerk for National Telephones. Also with them was Ada Louise aged 20 and unmarried. She was a Stationers assistant. The family then appear to have moved to Devon because Frederick died on 2/5/1912 aged 36 and was interred at Higher Cemetery, Exeter.

On 31st May 1916, May married Cecil Hatherleigh Taylor in Exeter.

Ada Louise died 1/1/1961.Her last address was 122,Markham Road,Bournemouth. She was known as Ada Louise Bate-Cubitt or Ada Louise Cubitt and is believed to have had at least one child. Ada married Samuel Frank Bate in Reading in 1906.

I would obviously like to make contact with anyone connected with these families and share information.

I also believe there was a connection with a farm in Bournemouth. It may be Winton Farm but I have been unable to confirm that as yet. Also connections with the Ferry across the River Stour at Longham, Dorset. This may have been on the site of the Bridge House Hotel.

My Grandfather, Walter Garnet Budden married Gertrude Adams on 5th February 1906 at Bournemouth Register Office. He was a Tram Car Conductor. Gertrude's father was Harry Charles Adams a Bricklayer.

Their only child Walter Charles was born on 2nd March 1906.He married Doris Florence Lintern from Shepton Mallet, Somerset on 19th November 1926 at Bournemouth Register Office and had 3 children. He worked for 51 years for the Post Office and was also a Union representative for many years.

JOHN AND RACHEL

John Budden of Woodlands and Rachel Andrews also of Woodlands were married in Horton of Woodlands on 7/2/1837.
( Picture shows St Wolfridas in Horton)
Rachel is believed to have been the daughter of Henry and Keturah Andrews, born on 21/1/1821.Henry was a Potter by trade.

One of the witnesses was Ann Budden.

The IGI has John as the son of George and Joanna Budden ( nee :Roles) See below-

( They also had a son James).

The first child of John and Rachel appears to be Georgiana - born in 1838- she became a servant in the house of John Keeping in Gussage All Saints.
On 30/4/1857 she married Peter Faulkner in Ringwood.

In 1841 in Verwood census John is aged 25 and Rachel aged 20. They have the following children:

Georgiana aged 3

Frances aged 1

Also there are -

James aged 30

Mary aged 20

and children,

Frederic aged 6, Charles aged 3 , Frank 11 months.

BUT.. they are all named BUTTON !

In 1851 in Verwood census John and Rachel are both aged 32.

They have the following children:

Frances aged 10-( She married Walter Bartlett on 25/12/1860)

George aged 8- His first marriage was to Mary Riglar 8/4/1867 at St Andrews Church,Kinson,Dorset, where he was living at the time.
His second marriage was to Ann Mary Kerley, widow of Charles on 10/4/1882 in Cranborne-

Emma aged 5

Eliza aged 3-She married Harry Beamish on 14/9/1875 in Christchurch.

Harriet aged 2-Buried on 22/10/1865

The census also shows a James and Mary Ann Budden in Verwood with children:

Frederic-Charles-Frank-Eliza-William-Ann and Charlotte.
( Mary Ann was I believe, Mary Ann Henning)

In 1861, both families appear in Boveridge Heath ( It appears that all Verwood was called this in 1861) as follows:

At Number 12.

John aged 48-Labourer.Born Woodlands

Rachel aged 41

Emma aged 13-( She married Alfred Habgood in Wimborne in 1865)

Harriet aged 9

John aged 7

Henry aged 5- He married Sarah Janes on 20/9/1876 in Bournemouth.

William aged 1
Rachel and all the children were given as born in Verwood.

At Number 14.

James aged 50-Potter-Born Woodlands.

Mary aged 45-Born Horton

Charles aged 24-Potter
Frank aged 22-Labourer
William aged 17-Farm labourer
Ann aged 13
Charlotte aged 11
Emily aged 9 -She married George Guy.
Lucy aged 6
Jane aged 2
Lot aged 1 month.
All the children were given as born in Verwood.

In 1871 census in Boscombe the following were shown:
John aged 58-Farm labourer
Rachel aged 51
Henry aged 14-Farm labourer
William aged 11
Charles aged 6-He married Martha Bagshot in 1885 in Christchurch.
All were shown as born in Cranborne.

In 1871 census in Verwood, James aged 60 and Mary aged 55 still had most of their family with them as follows:
Frederic aged 35 a Police Constable.
Frank aged 28 a Potters Labourer.
Ann aged 22
Charlotte aged 20
Emily aged 19
Louisa aged 16
Jane aged 12
Lot aged 10
James died on the 10th April, 1871 shortly after the census was taken.

In 1881 census John aged 66 and Rachel aged 61 were at the Albion Hotel, Verwood Common.
Also on Verwood Common were Mary.A.Budden, now widowed, aged 65 and working as a Potter along with Frank aged 42 and Lot aged 19.

There is obviously a connection with one of the Verwood Potteries.I have had a great deal of help with my research recently from the Verwood Historical Society. Many thanks to them for their help so far.

In 1881 census at Bargates, Christchurch are:

Henry.A.Budden a Coach Builder aged 25
Sarah Budden his wife aged 27
Florence Budden-Daughter aged 4
Charles Budden (Brother) a Coach Wheeler aged 18.

(Henry married Sarah Janes on 20/9/1876 at St Clement,Bournemouth)

In 1891 census Henry had moved to 31,Gladstone Road, Boscombe,Bournemouth and had another daughter, Alice Maud Budden aged 9.

In 1901 census Henry and wife Sarah were in Victoria Road , Bournemouth with grandson, William aged 3.

It now appears that Florence married William John Dwyer in 1899. She died shortly afterwards and her sister Alice then married William in 1900.

Henry, Sarah and grandson William Dwyer emigrated to Canada in 1907 before moving to America and are found in the 1920 census for Saginaw County, Michigan.

The Coach Builder business must I believe also be connected with John's Transport business.

John Budden died aged 82 on 23/11/1896 in Broomhill.Alfred Habgood, his son-in-law was present at his death.

Rachel Budden died aged 87 on 5/3/1908 at West Moors. Her daughter, Frances Bartlett was the informant.

GEORGE AND JOANNA( Nee: ROLES)
Although the IGI have George & Joanna as John's parents, it is by no means a certainty. George & Joanna married 6th March in 1799 in Witchampton.

Children found so far are :-

John bap 25/6/1815
Joanne bap 29/7/1800
James bap 27/3/1808
Sarah bap about 10/3/1799
William bap 26/2/1804
If anyone can help me prove who John's parents are I would be most grateful as this is my brick wall !!

I have found a George Budden baptised on 5/7/1778 in Edmondsham, son of William & Sarah. ( A William married a Sarah Hatchett on 10/4/1771 in Horton which could be them.)
Possible children besides George are:-

Elizabeth baptised 6/11/1771 in Horton.
William baptised 14/3/1773 in Edmondsham.
Wlliam baptised 26/5/1776 in Edmondsham.

WALTER GARNET BUDDEN

Pictured above with his wife Gertrude and son Walter Charles Budden, " Garnet " as he was know to many started work as an apprentice carpenter, then in 1903 aged 18, he joined Bournemouth Corporation Transport and eventually drove both Trams and Trolley buses. He recalled 10 hour working days and his first work was on open top carts when passengers were charged " Tuppence in old money".
Garnet was awarded a series of merit stripes for his conduct and on a Certificate dated 1909 the following was stated. " A bonus of one shilling given quarterly for good conduct, freedom from breach of rules, blameworthy accident or damage.Four consecutive bonuses warrant the merit stripe of four shillings ".
When he retired from the Corporation he worked for Thos. Ensor & Sons and was often to be seen ringing the bell at Wimborne Market to mark the beginning of an Auction. He was also still driving into his late eighties !

BUDDEN COAT OF ARMS

The Budden coat of arms illustrated is officially documented in

RIETSTAP'S ARMORIAL GENERAL.

The original description of the Arms ( Shield)

is as follows:

"EC.: AUX 1 ET 4 DE SA. AU LION D'OR, CELUI DU 1 CONT.; AUX 2 ET 3 D'AZUR A LA FLEUR-DE-LIS D'ARG., POSEE EN BANDE, ET UNE BANDE D'OR, CH. DE TROIS ROSES DE GU., BR. SUR LA FLEUR-DE-LIS."

When translated the Blazon also describes the original colors of the Budden Arms as:

" Quartered: 1 and 4) Black, a gold Lion, the one in the first quarter turned to the left ; 2 and 3) Blue, a silver Fleur - De - Lis placed diagonally and a gold diagonal band charged with three red roses placed over the Fleur-De - Lis."

Above the Shield and Helmet is the Crest which is described as:

" A naturally colored Peacock tail

charged with a red rose."

THE MEANING OF ....

The surname Budden can appear to be occupational in origin. Previous research has indicated that it can be associated with the English, Welsh and Germans, meaning, " one who makes casks and barrels, a cooper."

You will however, find other meanings for the name as many surnames have more than one origin. For instance, other research has said Budden belongs to the category of surnames derived from the first name of the father of the original bearer.
Also that Budden is a diminutive form of the Old English byname Budda meaning " a beetle" and continued in the forms of Budd-en, Budding, Budekin,Budecok and Buddy.
The Budde spelling is certainly worth considering- in Anglo-Saxon, the plural was formed by adding EN. Meaning Buds.

More extensive research has found difficulty in finding it with the exact spelling which you use today. In fact, it may well have been spelled differently hundreds of years ago. The more research you do, the more likely you will find different spellings. Carelessness, language changes and a very high rate of illiteracy were probably the main reasons.
