Live Music in the Courtyard

These alfresco sessions in the courtyard of Ye Olde George Inn have become something of an annual tradition. They are held on the same weekend as the Christchurch Festival which, on the Saturday, sees morris dance teams performing around the town and a barn dance at Twynham School in the evening.

Tutton's Well - Well Being Day

Not specifically a folk music event, or even a tradition (yet…) – more a spiritual celebration with a folky feel. Session stalwarts Nomad will be playing during the picnic, and Ted Davies, fiddle-player with the local Bushbeaters morris band, will be accompanying the circle dancing.

Tutton's Well has been a source of pure water for centuries and was almost certainly used by the Bronze and Iron Age inhabitants of the area. It is reported that the monks of Christchurch Priory knew of the water's curative properties, especially for ailments of the eye, and the local fusee chain workers are said to have bathed their tired eyes with it.

Beyond its mere medicinal attributes, the Well also symbolises the vitality, purity, and clear vision of the spiritual aspirant. It is that spirit, whether human or holy, that is celebrated by Well Being Day.

This is not an attempt to revive a lost celebration, but to initiate a new tradition. The Well has no known dedication or saint's day, so the date chosen is simply derived from the 1st Anniversary of the Well's reopening in 2004.

All or part of the celebration may be attended.

Tutton's Well Green is a public open space and can be visited at any time. Bordering on the reed beds of Stanpit Marsh, it is a quiet location, making it suitable for meditation or comtemplative practice. Although long-forgotten, the genius loci of this ancient well-spring may still be responsive to a votive offering...
