Re: Ship In Distress
well if you go to their website it tells you thus:
Travellers pass the Ship in Distress at Stanpit, they miss an interesting piece of Mudeford's historic past. In the 17th Century Oliver Cromwell used it during the battle of Iford. Smuggling was a major Christchurch business in the 18th Century, the Inn was kept by Hannah Siller, a raven-haired widow, known as the Protective Angel of Smugglers. Contraband was distributed from a creek at back of the Inn for distribution around the New Forest. The Inn takes its name from a shipwreck off Hengistbury Head from which Mudeford folk helped rescue survivors.
