Church Street c. 1910

Compare this image with the engraving by Benjamin Ferrey on the Home Page. The trams arrived in 1905 and lasted until superseded by trolley buses in 1936, when a turntable was constructed in the yard of the Dolphin Inn, on the right of the picture. Although the Dolphin Inn has gone, like so much of Christchurch's historic buildings stock, the turntable remains. Now believed to be the only one left in the country, it is listed Grade II, and has its own Blue Plaque on the Millennium Trail - see that page for details.
