VE Day in Christchurch, 8th May 1945
On the 7th May 1945, after six long years of war, Germany surrendered and Winston Churchill announced that Tuesday 8th May would be a public holiday and declared Victory in Europe (V-E) day. Many communities took the opportunity to organise street parties. One such party was held in Avon Road West in the Portfield area. The following three photographs of that day were supplied by Les Ogg, who lived in the road during the war and went to the Clarendon Road school. |
Avon Road West Street Party #1
Les Ogg:- "At the end of the war, the people of Avon Road West, like everybody else, arranged a street party for VE day. It was amazing what could be done in the circumstances. Cakes and jelly etc all laid out on trestle tables in the road. Fancy dress was the order of the day. A second party was organised for VJ day just a few months later."
