Poole Show 8th May 2005

The Poole bottle show organised by the Dorset club took place on Sunday 8th May at the Liberal Hall Hamworthy. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day but like most shows was busier in the first few hours. Attendance was similar to last years event. Thanks to everyone who attended the show especially those who gave up their time to help out on the day. The club as usual put on several displays of items, the main club display pictured above was hot water bottles most of which had local retailers names on them.

Coloured Syphons display

The display above of coloured syphons from a number of different collections includes examples from Weymouth, Bournemouth , Blandford ,Sherborne and Poole. The three extremely rare miniature syphons are from The Dorset Mineral Water Company Poole.

Potlid display

The display of nicely framed potlids was put on by club chairman David Orman.

Coloured lips display

A display of coloured lip codds from David Orman and Martin Jones including examples of Reliance patent bottles from Collis of Gillingham. The display is backed by a fine showcard from Matthews & Company , a Gillingham Brewery founded in 1750 and in business until 1963 when it was taken over by Hall & Woodhouse of Blandford.

Davis & Sons Dorchester Hamilton

A collector kindly brought along the hamilton pictured for me to photograph. I had been looking forward to seeing this bottle for a couple of months and I was certainly not dissapointed! In stunning condition and probably not dug the bottle is dark aqua and looks darker towards the base where the glass is thicker. Davis and Sons were chemists and druggists at High West St, Dorchester. The business was established in 1826 according to embossing on later codds. Charles Parsons had taken over the mineral water manufacturing side of the business by about1870, and I would say this bottle dates C1850. A dark green pontilled hamilton also exists for this company.
