Poole Show 6th May 2007 at the Liberal Hall, Hamworthy

The Dorset Club's annual event was again held at the Liberal Hall Hamworthy on Sunday 6th May 2007. Number of stallholders was slightly down on the previous year, but the numbers through the door were almost double the previous year! Thanks to everyone who helped with the running of the event on the day and the promotion of the event beforehand. We made a special effort this year to put on some good displays , pictures of all the displays are in this report. I didn't sell much myself, but added some interesting Dorset items to my collection.

Dorset Mineral Water Company Poole Display

A small display including a very rare showcard for this company and a selection of stoneware bottles used by the company which was in business at West Street Poole from about 1890 until 1935 , when the company name changed to Hants & Dorset Mineral Water Company limited. This company continued in business until 1979 when the business closed and the site was sold off for housing.

Dorset Chemists display

A display of Dorset chemists items including pot lids, labelled chemist bottles and other items from Dorset chemists , mostly Bournemouth. The display also included a range of pharmacy bottles that would have been seen in any late 19th century chemists shop.

Dorset Potteries display

A display of items made in Dorset Potteries including some very rare items. The pottery at Sandford near Wareham produced architectural pottery for most of it's lifetime from the 1860s through to the 1960s, but for short periods in the 19th century both decorative items and stoneware bottles were produced.

Crickmay's pottery at West Chickerell near Weymouth also produced stoneware bottles etc. for a short period in the 19th century before production became exclusively bricks , tiles and similar.

The potteries in the Verwood area produced a variety of domestic ware including bowls, jugs and the distinctive drinks containers known today as 'Owl jars' or Costrels. This production continued well into the 20th century.

Crickmay Stoneware and Sandford Pottery Jug

Pictured above is a close up of the Sandford Pottery relief moulded jug on the left, and a selection of 5 stoneware items made by the Crickmay Pottery Weymouth.

Bottles not costing a fortune

Finally a display of bottles to show that a collection of interesting and attractive bottles can be put together for a sensible price. A lot of these bottles are quite rare, but can be purchased relatively cheaply as they do not fall into any currently fashionable collecting field.
