Generation No. 1 1. JOHN10 RUNYARD (JOHN9, JOHN8, JOHN7, JEANNE6 RUNNIER, JEANNE5, JEANNE CHRISTOPHER4, SAMUEL3, WALTER2, JEANNE1) was born Abt. 1782 in Dorset. He married (1) SARAH SLADE September 21, 1803 in Wool, Dorset, daughter of JAMES SLADE and MARY PIERCE. She was born Bef. June 4, 1781 in Lulworth, Dorset, and died Abt. 1821. He married (2) MARY ANNE GILL November 11, 1832. She was born in West lulworth. Notes for JOHN RUNYARD: Baptized 6-23-1782 at St. Andrew's, East Lulworth, England. Protestant (Family had been Protestant for years, having fled France at the time of the Reformation, when the Catholic French King Slaughtered hundreds of thousands of French Hugenot Protestants). 1824 Cottages built at Burngate and St. Andrews. Carpenter, John Runyard. (born 1782). Rats more numerous than they had been known in the memory of men in the year 1824. Houses and fields and hedges was full of them. The Duke of Gloucester (younger brother of King George IV) left Lulworth Castle (which he was renting) for Bagshot, Surrey, to spend Christmas with his relatives.
**On April 29, 1826, John Runyard kicked his son, Richard, out of the family home at Shags for having atended Mass at the Catholic Chapel. Richard moved into the school house on the common. He lodged with the Rev. Fr. Mutardiare, the Jesuit Chaplain at the Lulworth Castle. He later lodged with his cousin Joseph Slade at Shags. John Runyard, interestingly, had also married into a Catholic family, having married Sarah Slade (b.1781), who was the daughter of James Slade, a family which, through their descent from the Turberville family, had remained Catholic since the Reformation (with all the penalties which this involved, since the official State religion was Protestant) John Runyard married his second wife, Mrs. Mary Gill, of West Lulworth, on Nov. 11, 1832. He had been a widower for 11 years, since the death of his wife, Sarah Slade. (John's son, Ambrose, b. 1818, married the daughter of Mary Gill--she was also called Mary-some years afterwards. Technically, he married his stepsister and his stepmother also became his mother-in-law!). John had a son, Robert, born of this second marriage. (also had son, Robert, from first marriage!) John Runyard , in failing health, gave up his position as Superintendent of the Carpenter's Yard, and moved to West Lulworth from Shags on Nov. 25, 1853. **From the Diary of Henry Rolls, shoemaker, of East Lulworth (1803-1877).
