I feel I should add here the warning about Vitamin A and not to exceed recommended daily dosages without careful thought. There have been some very clear evidence as well as dramatic increase in risk of cancer for certain groups such as smokers.
On a positive note, the new Director of the Paulin Institute (USA) after reconsidering medical evidence and trials, confirmed that High Dose Vitamin C taken WHEN THE COLD STARTS could reduce the period of "suffering" by ca 20%. However, he disagreed with the Nobel Prize Winner, the Late Professor Linus Paulin, that high dose Vitamin C would actually prevent a cold: he felt there was no such medical evidence. As a Chemist, I read and worked within some of Linus Paulin's field of Theoretical Chemistry (eg Valence Bond Theory). He visited Queen's University (Canada) ca 1973/4 to give a lecture on his new researches into this area. I remember at my annual compulsary Queen's Uni medical, the medic asking if I subscibed to High Dose Vitamin C. What was more of note was my not having ever had my cholesterol checked and so looking ignorant when I was asked what my cholesterol level was! "Don't they do that routinely over-there?" During 2004 in the UK, Diabetes UK feel the need to advertise in the press to get people to have their cholesterol checked, especially if they are Diabetic or Glucose Intolerant! Wake-up Britain! I agree with the need for a careful approach but say here that some people are unwell and some people are actually deficient: I feel there is a need to have vitamin blood testing similar to Cholesterol and Blood Glucose for those who seem to feel unwell but no reason. My experience has shown that rarely are patients given such tests - I discovered I was Vitamin B12 deficient only when my symptoms were extreme. Please see the Blood testing page as it grows to include more National and International updates and news. Peter Randle 1st May 2008 |
