GRAZING CATTLE
 | Four Shetland Cattle were introduced on site on 18th November, 2005 in the interests of nature conservation. They will help reduce the amount of scrub and encourage more rare flora and fauna to flourish on this internationally important heathland site. Shetland Cattle have been chosen as they have a number of attributes, which make them suitable for conservation grazing on an urban fringe reserve: . Extremely hardy animals having been bred to cope with the harsh wet and windy conditions of the Shetland Isles- the original house cow of the Shetland crofter. . Self sufficient-Shetland cattle can be out-wintered without any ill effect and can thrive on low nutrient grazing.
They do not require supplementary feeding
. Placid and docile nature- Shetlands are not bothered by the public and are not naturally aggressive towards dogs.
. Classified as critically endangered by the Rare Breed Survival Trust. We are helping to conserve a valuable part of our heritage.
. High aesthetic appeal- attractive white and black markings with "Viking style" short horns.
For yours and the animals' safety please keep dogs under close control. It is an offence under local byelaws to disturb or worry animals on site.
