May 2013
 | Kinson Local Astronomy notes for May 2013
There should be ample opportunities again this month to star gaze. Do have a good month. This of course, as always, really does depend on the weather.
Please wrap up appropriately, especially when venturing outside during mid evening or early morning observation periods.
SUN The Sun can be reflected through binoculars or a scope onto white card and it`s worth checking for sun spots on fine days.
Never look at the Sun directly or through any instrument other than those specifically designed for this purpose.
JUPITER Jupiter in Taurus will be low in the west and sets earlier now. Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on the 28th.
MARS Mars moves through Aries into Taurus and is not well placed for viewing.
MERCURY Mercury will be present in the west later this month and is worth looking for on the 28th.
SATURN Saturn in Virgo is well placed for viewing in May.
NEPTUNE, URANUS & PLUTO Neptune in Aquarius and Uranus in Pisces, slowly begin to emerge as morning objects before sunrise.
Pluto in Sagittarius is a morning object before sunrise requiring very powerful equipment to observe it.
VENUS Venus will be low in the west during this month. Conjunction with Jupiter on the 28th.
MOON New on 10th; 1st Quarter on 18th; Full on 25th; Last Quarter on 2nd & 31st.
MAIN METEOR SHOWER(S) Eta Aquarids. Peak, May 5th to 6th, looking eastwards at the radiant in Aquarius after midnight onwards.
TARGETS FOR May Please refer to our published maps.
