January 2009
 | Kinson Local Astronomy notes for January 2009
There should be ample opportunities again this month to star gaze. Do have a good month. This of course, as always, really does depend on the weather. Always wrap up appropriately, especially when venturing outside during mid evening or early morning observation periods. The Winter Solstice took place on 22nd December.
SUN The Sun can be reflected through binoculars or a scope onto white card and it`s worth checking for sun spots on fine days.
Never look at the Sun directly or through any instrument other than those specifically designed for this purpose.
MERCURY Mercury is low in the SW after sunset during early January.
VENUS Venus is viewable in the SW after sunset throughout January.
MARS Mars in Sagittarius is not well placed for viewing at this time.
SATURN Saturn in Leo is viewable before midnight during January.
JUPITER Jupiter is not well placed for viewing this month.
URANUS & NEPTUNE & PLUTO Uranus in Aquarius and Neptune in Capricornus are low in the SW after sunset this month.
Pluto in Ophiuchus requires very powerful equipment to observe it before sunrise.
MOON New on 26th; 1st Quarter on 4th; Full on 11th; Last Quarter on 18th.
METEORS Quadrantids Meteor Shower from January 1st - 5th. Look for meteors radiating from the constellation of Bootes.
TARGETS FOR JANUARY Maps to follow.
