Dorset County Council ride roughshod over villagers views
DCC has proposed to site a Mechanical Biological Treatment(MBT) plant at Winfrith adjacent to the UKAEA Why? Well there are not many landfill sites available and soon there will be penalties for excess landfill. What is an MBT plant? Its a factory unit that accepts household waste, sorts and grades it, some is broken down biologically. Waste pellets are then burnt off in a burner(incinerator) reclaiming approx 20% electrical energy to feed the grid. Unused waste and ashes are then taken to a landfill site. Is this proven technology? There are much larger plants in Germany and Norway but none have been tried in Great Britain. Are they safe? Waste burning inevitably produces deadly dioxins. The MBTs will be built to government guidelines but how safe is safe? How many are they building in Dorset? Three are planned but this is where we run into the problem. This site is to take the rubbish of West Dorset(incl Lyme Regis) as DCC say they cannot find a suitable area in the Bridport, Weymouth and Dorchester triangle. DCC state they need a brownfield site so they have chosen a greenfield site in the wrong area. What should be done about Waste? The principle of proximity is well established. i.e. Weymouth should look after it's own waste. Waste sorting at source should be encouraged. |
