Steamer Point Excavation 19-20 March 2005
TCA members working on the Council’s Nature Reserve at Steamer Point noticed a linear raised ground ridge running through the Reserve. During May 2004, some members carried out a non-invasive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey of this ridge with the permission of the Countryside Service Warden, Peter Holloway.
We obtained permission to carry out an excavation of this feature on Saturday 19 March and Sunday 20 March 2005, which is reported on our Steamer Point Excavation page.

Lost Mills of Christchurch 13 August 2005
 | On the fine summer evening of 13 August, Mike Tizzard led a party of our members, and their families and friends on a guided walk of the sites of the 'lost mills of Christchurch'.
We started at the waterworks at Knapp Mill. Mike explained that these were built on the site of the historic Knapp Mill. Originally founded in medieval times, a mill stood on this site until the early 20th century. Pictures exist of the mill before it was demolished by the water company.
In collaboration with local historian Sue Newman, Mike has been researching the mill sites for a period of 15 years. Mike showed us a copy of an old map found in the archives of the waterways around Knapp Mill. This map identifies a further mill about 200 metres north of Knapp, called Fougats Mill - all trace of this and the leat which provided its motive power have disappeared.
We then moved to the gardens of Millhams Meade, where, by kind permission of the owner, Mike led us around possible sites of Town, or Port, Mill. Historic references exist to this mill, possibly linking it to a site at the end of Ducking Stool Lane. Mike also described the survey work of the various waterways in this area which he had conducted with Roger Hills and Ray Baxter, which revealed other possibilties for further structures.
