Council for British Archaeology Award

TCA is delighted to acknowledge the receipt of a Challenge funding award from the Council for British Archaeology to which TCA is affiliated. The award of £500 was made in response to an application for funds to cover equipment to be used in our ongoing Buildings Survey.

Historic Buildings Survey

TCA has an ongoing project to record the features of the buildings in Church Street and Castle Street, in particular where they back onto the grounds of Christchurch Castle. Sources record that in the time of the Civil War, the Castle ditch was recut as part of the fortifications, and houses were demolished to improve the field of fire for artillery mounted on the motte.

Our survey is aimed particularly at examining the cellars of these buildings (if still accessible) to determine whether evidence of the original ditches or the recut ditches remain.
