GWENT CLUB (HOME) 6-5-05.

First game of the new season, with Ernie Price voted back in as skipper, all looked good....

well not exactly the start we wanted, from the outset we just didnt get going although Chris Bates did start us off well enough with ( 20 ).
Rest of the leg started a slide that continued all nite.
Mark Healey (19), Pat Butcher (11), Keith Bate (15), first leg scores 65 and down by 12.!
Second leg we lost another 6 pins..
Gary Shaw (14),Wayne Jordan (16),Richard Witt (16),John Miles (13)..
Third leg managed to make 2 back, but, game was still lost by 16 !!!
Ernie Price (15), Gareth Butcher (17), Redge Slade (16), Andy Sterry (18).

Chris picked up player of match, but a much better team performance will be needed from now on !!

BETTWS SOCIAL (AWAY) 13-05-05

First away game and after last weeks opener a good chance to get off the mark.
First leg got us off to a good start C.Bate (18), Beryl Merton (16),Dave Dent (19), Lionel Sterry (15), giving us a 6 pin lead.
Secong leg and with there lead off man playing a blinder with a 27, including a 13 spare we needed a good response...unfortunately ...we didnt..
G.Shaw (16),Pat Butcher (14), Dennis Beizsley(18), Wayne Jones (13), managed a 61 leg.
so from 6 up we went to 21 down, a very good 88 leg from the bettws.
So a big ask from the last leg...Andy Sterry (19), Phillys Johnson (22), John Miles (21), Redge Slade (18), a good 80 leg but it was still 8 short, still a very good effort.

Phillys Johnson took capts player of the match.

CIVIL SERVICE (HOME) 20-5-05

2 games played 2 lost, second home game, time to get some points on the board....
Good start from first leg Keith Bate (17), Beryl Merton (19), Mark Healey (17) and Lionel Sterry (18) all bowling well giving us a 9 pin lead.
Second leg needing to hold the lead and even build on it..Wayne jordan (19), Dave Dent moving to second leg securing a 12 spare for (21) with some very nice bowling, maybe the golden skittle winner has finally got some confidence, long may it continue.
Third up Gary Shaw, steady (17) and finally John Miles (16) a little off sorts compared to the high standards he set himself. Altogether a good leg and another 3 pins gained so a 12 pin lead going into the last, surely enough ????
First roll up for the civil and suddenly the game is wide open as they score 34 only answered by the ferns with a 24...12 points suddenly down to a slender 2 pin lead.
Second roll and the civil score a good 27, again the ferns answer it with another 24 ....so 12 up has become 1 down with a roll left.
Civil's final roll and could it be that they have let it slip , only a 21.
So 23 required from the ferns to win. Andy Sterry 6 (19), Phyllis Johnson 4 (16), Dennis Beizsley 4 (17) leaving a 8, to draw, wanted from last man, Redge Slade unfortunately he could only manage 6 (16).
Game was lost by 2 pins !!!!!

Dave Dent took player of the match for his 21 including a 12 spare.

A good team performance with nobody scoring below 16, but still a loss.
Lets vent our frustration on the skittles next week not on each other, we need to continue to play as a team and the results will come.

EXCELSIOR ( AWAY ) 27-5-05.

Ferns "A" or England Cricket Team !!!

Fourth game of the season and a tough game ahead after finding out that the excelsior were also 0-3 for season so far.
First leg Chris Bate came back in with steady (18), Mark Healey slightly below par (16), Beryl Merton very good (20) and Lionel Sterry (15), a steady opening 69 leg although we went 7 pins down.
Second leg or as it seems they are to become known in away games, the middle order collapse !!.
With an opening roll up of 12 things were not off to the best of starts.Phyllis Johnson (14), Dave Dent (15) losing his top spot in the averages, Wayne Jones (11) and Keith Bate (16). Although some of the bowling deserved a bit better, least said the better i think.......So with a 28 pin lead the excelsior looked odds on to claim there first win....
Last leg Andy Sterry (24), an excellent spare and claiming player of the match, Ernie Price (18), Wayne Jordan (21), Redge Slade (21).
An excellent last leg but again all too late as an 84 leg only managed to claw back 2 pins.

So 4 games in and still no win !!!
to be continued.....

Saints.

Saints (Away). 03-06-05.

With the toss won ferns are first up and with a first leg led by Keith Bate (17), Beryl Merton (16), Dennis Beizsley (12) and Lionel Sterry (17) a steady if slightly disapointing start, a 62 giving us a 7 pin lead, but with one of there players having a 2 across, we let them off the hook with a second roll up of only 11 down....
Second leg up and the capt hoping that this away game wouldnt have another middle disaster...Andy Sterry led the way (22), Pat Butcher finally breaking her 18 barrier and bowling very well for (20),Phyllis Johnson a little unlucky ( 12) and finally Gary Shaw (20) finding his old form again.
A very well bowled 74 leg, but saints scored 76 pulling 2 pins back.
Final leg needing to bowl well to defend there 5 pin lead, first roll a solid 28 but, yet again the opposition find a spare scoring 32.. 4 back.
Second roll another solid 28 , saints reply with a 27 so a 2 pin lead for the final roll.
John Miles 4 (18), Ernie Price 7 (21), John Evans 6 (22) and Redge Slade 4 (16) giving a final roll of 21, leaving saints 23 to win.
with rolls of 8,7,8 ther first three men wrapped it up. Another loss !!.
A decent enough effort from the last leg although last man Redge Slade needs to score more than 16 as the teams anchor man.
Yet again the other team win with the difference being a spare.
Out of the first 5 games played 6 spares have been recorded against us. Only getting 2 ourselves (D.Dent,A.Sterry), now whether you look at it as just bad luck or not bowling well enough, either way 0-5 is relegation form and none of us want that !!!.

nsa

N.S.A (HOME) 10-06-05.

Third home game of the season and no better time to start a winning streak !!!
First leg Chris Bate (18), Beryl Merton (20), an unusually out of form Mark Healey (12) and Dave Dent (19), nice steady start and a 2 pin lead.
Second leg up Steady Sterry (19), Pat Butcher (16), Phyllis Johnson (17) and Lionel Sterry (18) all bowling well a good 70 leg and with the nsa having a stinker (49) a 23 pin lead is opened up. Could this be first win !!!
Last leg and Keith Bate (19) back to his best, Gary Shaw having a Mark Healey moment (12)and well Captain what can i say ....... i think nothing is best ....Ernie Price (9) and finally Redge Slade (16).
N.S.A pulled 10 pins back but thankfully the lead was still 13, so a first league win finally secured.
Player of the match was awarded to Beryl Merton.
Lets get a roll going now, win,win,win......

LYSAGHTS CUP

NEWPORT COUNTY (A) Lysaghts cup Qtr final.
WED 22-06-05.

Having finally got to the correct venue ( committee, tut, tut ), and with a few players only available at short notice, not ideal preperation.
First leg up Gary Shaw (16), Gough Jones (19) bowled very well, nice to see him back, Dennis Beizsley (8).......and Lionel Sterry an under par (16), with only 59 following countys 75, its up hill from the start, 16 pins down.!!
Second leg up, hoping to get us back in the game.
First man Andy Sterry, bowling very well this summer (21), a rare outing for Alan Butcher and after a 1 from his first roll, bowled well to score (16), Ernie Price (18) and John Miles a good (21). A 76 leg and 6 pins pulled back only 10 down.
Last leg Wayne Jones making his 5th away game appearance (20) a good opening , surely must be due a home game ...Second up Pat Butcher (10) a little unlucky, Mark Healey (15)and Redge Slade (16). 5 pins pulled back but unfortunately still 5 short.
Good Luck to the County in the semi finals..

Columba (Home). 24-06-05.

After last weeks first league win hopes are high for a first home win !!
First leg Keith Bate (15), Beryl Merton (21) excellent bowling, Dave Dent under par (12) and Lionel Sterry (17).A steady start 65, only 2 pins down.
Second leg, Andy ""i love summer skittles"" Sterry, again scoring very well (26) with a 13 spare, Phyllis Johnson (15), Gough Jones back n playing nicely (19) and also a welcome return for Phil Merton (21). An excellent 81 and a 9 pin lead gained.
Last leg, Wayne Jordan (17), Gary Shaw (16), Waynes Jones on his home debut (18) and John Miles reliable as ever (21), sealing the victory with a 72 leg.
Player of the match awarded to Andy Sterry.
2 wins on the trot and a very good team performance, lets hope it keeps rollin....

N.S.A (Away). 01-07-05.

Battle at the bottom ?

First leg Keith Bate (14), Bertl Merton(18), Mark Healey(20) finding his old form and Lionel Sterry(15), a 67 being let off by a 68 by the nsa, so only 1 down.
Second leg up, Andy Sterry(17) an ok score but Mr Sterry set himself a pretty high standard this summer, but on an alley he dislikes, quietly happy i think, Phyllis Johnson (14), Ernie Price(15) and Phil Merton(14).
A 60 !! leg again let off by the nsa scoring a 62, so 3 pins down with a great oppurtunity to get a lead gone.
Third leg John Miles(18), Wayne Jones(24) with a 13 spare with some excellent bowling (also losing his ferns virgin tag, come on gary shaw), Wayne Jordan(14) and Redge Slade(15).
A 71 leg including a 30 in the last roll up, but the nsa had given enough chances and bowled a 78.
Ferns losing by 10.
With 4 x 14's and 3 x 15's scored by more than half the team we got what we deserved and with games starting to run out we NEED wins.
Capts player of the match went to Wayne Jones.

Columba (Away). 06-07-05.

Top v Bottom !!

With the Columba riding high at the top of the league with only 1 defeat so far (away to ferns), this was not going to be easy!!
First leg up and with only 12 players available the capt has to shuffle his pack slightly, up first Beryl Merton (14), Ernie Price (18), Pat Butcher (14) and Lionel Sterry a very good (21). Both ladies unlucky only to score 14, but only losing 3 pins on the leg.
Second leg up and Andy Sterry (18), Phyllis Johnson finding her old form (21), Alan Butcher a little unlucky (13) and Phil Merton.... (8) not a lot to say really we all know Phil is a far better player than this.
So unfortunately another 9 pins are lost second leg, needing the last leg to make up 12 pins.
First up Wayne Taxi Jordan (18), Wayne Jones (14), mr reliable John Miles scoring well under some friendly banter (20) and Redge Slade a good (21), a decent enough leg but only 4 pins pulled back.
Another loss and with games running out its getting tougher each week.

Excelsior. (Home) 15-07-05.

After the midweek defeat a home victory is a must!
First leg Chris Bate bowled very well (22), Beryl Merton (17), Dave Dent (14) and Keith Bate (20), a good leg and with the saints first man opening with a spare for 28 across, being only 3 pins down was a bonus.
Secong leg Andy Sterry (21), Gary Shaw back in the team (18), John Miles (17) and capt Ernie Price (18).
Another well bowled leg and with the saints having a middle order collapse a 14 pin lead is taken into the last leg.
Last leg Wayne Jordan (17), Wayne jones (13), an unlucky Pat Butcher (12) and very poor Redge Slade (11) making the team hold its breath for the victory, with events away from the skittles slightly taking over !! Fortunately the saints could only pull 12 pins back, giving victory to the ferns by 2. .....whew....!!
A well bowled team performance for the first 9, 10 players lets hope we can get another result again at home next week ??

Excelsior. (Home) 15-07-05.

After a lacklustre display at the excelsior earlier in the season a home win was much needed.
First leg keith Bate, playing very well (20), Beryl Merton (16), Mark Healey (15) and Gary Shaw (18).
A steady 69 giving us a 2 pin lead.
Secong leg Andy Sterry enjoying his summer skittles with another fine display (25), Phyllis Johnson (14), Dennis Biezsley a little unlucky after a recall (13) and Chris Bate (18).
A steady 70 leg and with one of there players scoring 6 across, another 14 pins gained. So a 16 pin lead going into the final leg.
Last leg Wayne Jordan (17), Wayne Jones (18), John Miles (18) and Redge Slade (21). All last leg players bowling well and another 12 pins gained, so a comfortable 28 pin win, but more importantly 2 more points for the fight against relegation..
Player of the match went to Andy Sterry.

Civil Service (AWAY) 22-07-05.

After previous weeks and the big improvement could 3 wins on the trot be possible?
First leg Keith Bate, bowling very well (22), Beryl Merton (16), Mark Healey (21) and Lionel Sterry back from holidays (15), not a bad leg but 6 pins down.
Second leg Andy Sterry (20), Phil Merton a bit unlucky (13), Dave Dent (15) with a no ball and finally capt Ernie Price (11), the capt not seeming to be able to find his range. Only a 59 leg , but with the skittles gods smiling on the ferns at the moment and the civil only have a 53!! all square and all to play for.
Last leg having it all to play for.
First up Wayne Jordan, an excellent (23), Wayne Jones (18), john Miles (18) and Redge Slade (22).with roll up scores of 29, 27, 25 and a leg total of 81 with some very good bowling by all the last leg players the ferns took the points with 15 to spare !!!
Player of the match was awarded to Wayne Jordan.

Bettws Social (Home) 29-07-05.
Could the end of season winning run keep on running ....
First leg Chris Bate (22), Beryl Merton (19), Mark Healey (19) and Lionel Sterry (19), a very good leg and an 11 pin lead..
Second leg Andy Sterry (18), Gary Shaw (14) Dave Dent (18) and Keith Bate (17) a steady leg and another 3 pins gained. 14 up going into the last.
Last leg Wayne Jordan (14), Wayne Jones (15), John Miles (16) and Redge Slade (15). All four players not able to repeat last weeks heroics, but doing enough to keep the 14 pin lead and securing another good win.
Player of the match was awarded to C.Bate.

Gwent Club. (AWAY) 5-08-05.

Last game of the season and with the threat of relegation finally gone, time to relax and enjoy the game, although gwent needed the win to confirm promotion.
First leg Keith Bate (17), Beryl Merton (18), Phyllis Johnson (17) and Lionel Sterry mistiming the end of the season by about 30 mins (10), 13 down !!!
Second leg Andy Sterry (24) what a season hes had finishing with an average of nearly 21!!, hope it carries onto the winter, Gary Shaw (17), Dennis Beiszley(12) and Ernie Price (13). another 13 pins lost so 26 down.
Final leg of the season Wayne Jordan (10), Wayne Jones (21), John Miles (16) and Redge Slade (20). Only 12 pins lost that leg .......Congrats to the Gwent Club on there promotion and after a bad start the only team to do the double over us.
Final player of the match went to A.Sterry.

So the season ends with a comfortable mid table finish, not exactly where we wanted to be at the start of the season but after going 0-5 in the first 5 games not a bad performance overall. Thanks to everyone see you all next year.
