Description This memorial consists of four cardboard panels within a glass fronted frame. The panels contain lists of those who left the parish to serve in WW1, with small red crosses against the names of those who did not return. The list is compiled on a street by street basis - some of the streets no longer exist. The panels are heavily foxed but the lettering is still clear.
[Extract from the Friends of War Memorials web site.] During the First World War communities made lists of local men and women who were serving. As news of casualties reached home these lists became revered objects; often placed outside churches and other conspicuous sites, they became decked with flowers.

TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ONBOARD H.M.S. VICTORIA JUNE 22nd 1893.
Erected by the survivors.
Further Information HMS VICTORIA was a Victoria Class turret ship of the Royal Navy. Built by Elswick, engines by Humphreys and launched 9/6/1887. Completed sea trials 1889. On completion she became flagship in the Mediterranean of Admiral George Tryon. In course of evolutions off the coast of Syria 22/6/1893, she was rammed and sunk by HMS CAMPERDOWN, the ship gradually turned over and suddenly turned turtle and capsized. The disaster cost the lives of Admiral George Tryon and 321 officers and men. Among the survivors was John Jellicoe, the Executive Officer, who went on to become the C in C of the Grand Fleet in WW1, arguably Britain's greatest Admiral since Nelson. See also: www.compass.dircon.co.uk/Victoria.htm which contains a full account of the tragedy.
The memorial itself was originally erected in what was then the Town Square, but was removed to Victoria Park in 1903, at the request of the survivors, in order to offer it better protection.
