George Gardiner - the Hampshire Song Collector

WHAT'S HAPPENING? It is a busy year for the GAG team, we were pleased to participate in the Gosport and Fareham Easter Festival, then we Visited our good friends at the Fo'c'sle Folk club in Sothampton, we're giving an illustrated talk at Sidmouth Folk Festival and the Hampshire Songs Day is scheduled for mid September. You can read more about these items by choosing them from the left hand margin. The object of this web site is to celebrate the work of George Gardiner and spread the word about the songs he collected. He devoted his final years to collecting some 1200 songs in Hampshire despite the obvious difficulties of travel at the time. His notebooks contain many interesting songs in their original form, but few people in Hampshire seem aware of them. The songs tell us of the ways of the past, but deal with some issues that are still relevant today. Most importantly, they are good to sing.
