Proposed Complements of Aircraft Carriers.

All Swordfish aircraft to be equipped with extra 65 gallon internal auxiliary petrol tanks.

ARK ROYAL - 30 T.S.R. 18 Fighters.
GLORIOUS - 24 T.S.R. 12 Fighters.
FURIOUS - 24 T.S.R. 9 Fighters.

Note: small modifications to the above may be found desirable.

12 armed with torpedoes.



Zero + 2 1/2 Fly off. 12 Fighters. (for defence of minelaying and torpedo aircraft.)

0500 to 0600. Land on 0100 range, refuel and fly off again to continue on reconnaissance and/defence of carrier force.

Note: Zero will be 0030 if operating from Varanger area, and 0100 if operating from And Fjord area.

Endurance - Swordfish and Skua.



Aircraft: Swordfish

Tankage: 167 + 65 = 232 gallons.

Consumption: Mean 30 gallons/hour at 92 1/2 kts.

Endurance - Time: 7hrs 40 mins.

Endurance - Distance: 720 miles.



Aircraft: Skua

Tankage: 166 gallons.

Consumption: 27 gallons/hour at 120 kts. 30 gallons/hour at 130 kts.

Endurance - Time: 6hrs 5 mins. at 120kts. 5hrs 30 mins. at 130kts

Endurance - Distance: 730 miles at 120kts. 715 miles at 130kts.



Note: (i). Full distance trials with the aircaft actually taking part in the operation will be desirable to ensure that no aircraft has an abnormally large consumption.
