The Charm of Birds

The Charm of Birds by Viscount Grey of Fallodon
First published 1927

Written by Edward Grey, a keen ornithologist and the Foreign Secretary from 1905 to 1916 who famously said “the lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”.
Grey was a frequent visitor to his cottage refuge on the banks of the Itchen at Avington where he indulged in his two passions – birds and fly-fishing.
He records many of his observations in this book, which will still be recognised and appreciated by the reader despite the many years that have since passed. A favourite book.

The Cottage Book

Privately printed in 1909 for a small group of his friends. Only about twenty copies were produced and it had remained virtually unknown until the publication of this book. Illustrated with postcards from the time, etchings and specially commissioned watercolours of the flora and fauna described in the book.
