Spartan Colts 9-1 Gosport Falcons (Hants Cup 12 Sep 2004)
 | With only one pre-season friendly behind them Spartan Colts were slow to start in this Hampshire Cup tie. Gosport Falcons made it very difficult for any football to be played and frustrated Spartan early on. However in the 30th Minute Michael Privett opened his and Spartans account after a good save from the Falcons Keeper. Falcons refused to give up though and before the break made the score level at 0ne apiece. Straight after the break Spartan regained the lead through a close range header from Elliott Fairweather and from then on it was all Spartan Colts. Goals from Baz Snelling, Mark Gawn (2), Michael Austin, Antonio Dawkins and two more from Man of the Match Privett took the tally to 9 and but for some great saves from the Falcons keeper the score would have been well in to double figures. Final Score Spartan Colts 9 Gosport Falcons 1.

United Services 3-0 Spartan Colts (19 Sep 2004)
 | Kicked off the park………………. That’s all that can be said about today’s farcical ‘game’ between United Services and Spartan Colts. The only thing good to come out of today’s game was the FANTASTIC discipline, behaviour and dignity that the players and supporters of Spartan colts showed as the players were scythed down continually throughout the game as concerned parents looked on in anguish. At 0-0 at half time United Services were not only lucky to be level but also to have more than 9 players on the park still. The referee’s assessor, Jan Rolls who was present left shortly after the break and seemed more interested in scouting Spartan players although he refused to officially declare this activity!
With injuries mounting up Spartan slowly began to be over powered and United Services were 3-0 victors if that’s what you call it!! However Spartan Colts were the winners of fair play and at least they tried to play a game of football in the spirit it should be. In the referee's defence, he has only 2 months experience and it was unfair to dump this game on him. With the lack of control and issuing of cards the challenges remained unchecked.

Spartan Colts 0-4 Stubbington (26 Sep 2004)
 |
A below par Spartan colts were well beaten by Stubbington in the local derby game. With Spartan missing several key player anyway the lack of commitment from some players made the task of winning the game impossible. However the first half finished all square with neither side managing to break through the others tight defence. The second half however belonged to Stubbington and once they had broken the deadlock Spartan seemed to give up and although several of the side battled hard Stubbington went on to cruise to a 4-0 lead. Man of the match was Mike Jenkins for his continual efforts in the middle of the park. Final Score Spartan Colts 0 Stubbington 4

Copnor NE 2-1 Spartan Colts (3 Oct 2004)
 | Unfortunately due injuries, illness and traffic congestion Spartan had to play the whole of the 1st half with only 10 men. However they battled superbly to only trail 1-0 at half time when Baz Snelling finally made arrived after beating the traffic. However the injury list increased by one more 5 minutes after the start when Mike Jenkins took a heavy blow to the knee that removed him from the game.... until that is the manager asked him to stand in between the sticks and bring Tom Price out to at least have an 11 v 11 game again. Within minutes 'Pricey' played a deft pass through for Mark Gawn to level the scores at 1-1. However in the final 5 minutes Copnor regained the lead but even then the Spartan team kept on and very nearly grabbed an equaliser when Scotty's free kick was nearly converted by Baz Snelling. MoM was Antonio Dawkins for an excellent performance at the heart of the Spartan defence

Totton Rangers 4-0 Spartan Colts (Hants Cup 10 Oct 2004)
 | For the fourth week in a row, Spartan were without key players but were still confident to progress to the next round on the Hants Cup. However following a mix up in the Spartan defence the wind playing a major part in Spartan found themselves 2-0 down even though they were the best team. Unable to overcome the shock, and Totton becoming more physical Spartan began to lose belief and were brought down to Tottons level of trying to play the long ball. Some poor challenges let Totton attack again and unbelievably Spartan were 3 down at the break. The 2nd half again was physical with Totton picking up 3 yellow cards for persistent fouling and one stamping incident which, at his own admittance, went unnoticed by the ref. With the Spartan heads dropped Totton pushed on and controlled the game and only for Man of the Match Tom Price who pulled off a string of great saves would the score have been more tan the Final 4-0.

Spartan Colts 1-0 Havant & W'Ville (17th Oct 2004)
 | Spartan Colts finally won their first league game of the season against H&W Boys. Spartan started very slowly and maybe due to having to re-organise the defence after only 5 minutes through the loss of Scott Allen with a knee injury, after 10 minutes gone they started to pass the ball around and produce the quality football they are known for. H&W were very strong but Spartan matched them physically and on 30 minutes a swift move down the left side saw the ball flicked on to Man of the Match Baz Snelling who carried the ball for 30 yard before smashing it home from close range. Spartan continued to play excellent football and were unlucky to only be one up at half time. The 2nd half saw much of the same with Baz, Marc Gawn and Dave King all going close but were unable to add to the one goal. Tom Price in the Spartan goal was not called on much in the game but when he was he saved superbly.

Spartan Colts 2-1 City Royals (31 Oct 2004)
 | Under new management of Stuart Price Spartan continued the winning streak with a well earned victory over City Royals. Spartan started the game with pace and quickly opened the scoring with a some what scrambled finish to a well constructed passing movement. The ball eventually being converted off the heels of Mark Gawn. But they all count. Spartan then controlled and virtually dominated the game and were unlucky not to add to the tally. However football being the game it is Royals then grabbed an equaliser with a long range effort to take the teams in level at half time. Spartan continued with the smooth eye catching football in the second period but had to wait until midway through the half to add to the score when Mark Gawn was fouled in the box and were awarded a penalty. Mike Jenkins calmly stroked the ball in to the corner of the net from the spot kick. Royals tried to grab a late equaliser but Spartan held on to take all three points. Mom goes to Michael Austin for his continuous battling and work rate in the middle of the midfield.

Purbrook Youth A-A Spartan Colts (7 Nov 2004)
 | Game abandoned by referee on grounds pitch was unsafe and deteriorating after 31 minutes following a serious injury to a player. An ambulance was called and the player was taken to hospital. Player has not suffered a serious injury - sprain and bruising to the ankle.
Score at time was PYSC 4 -v- Spartan 1. Presumably game will have to be rescheduled but will confirm.
Thanks for the assistance and concern by all and to the paramedic / ambulanceman who attended.
The difficult conditions made tackling a dodgy affair and the referee was correct to call a halt to it. The grass was like a jungle in some areas, and the mud morass like in others. The lines were invisible in some areas and the lines bog like where the assistant refs had been running.
After the game, and the player was despatched to the hospital, a lighter moment was observed as Scotty fell base over apex on the pitch after kicking a ball with his trainers on.

Havant & W'Ville 2-2 Spartan Colts (14 Nov 2004)
 | Welcome back Tez
Jo 'Tez' Terry made his return to Spartan Colts, after a long lay-off through injury and celebrated with a goal to emphasise his return. Spartan grabbed a well deserved lead through a characteristic free kick from Liam McCormick early on and set the standard for the football Spartan played throughout the game. A controversial equaliser was scored by Havant after the referee awarded a goal kick instead of the obvious, to most, corner and then missed a blatant handball as the Havant scorer controlled the ball to shoot. Spartan re-took the lead almost instantly when a corner was flicked on by Scott Allen to the well placed (Man of the Match) Tez, who blasted the ball home from close range. In the second half Spartan had numerous chances to score but were deprived of more goals by good keeping and some more some pretty horrific challenges. None of which resulted in any action from the official. It was a tough, closely fought game where, thankfully, there were no long lasting injuries as a result as Spartan had no subs to bring on. Late in the game Havant grabbed an equaliser, after a goal mouth scramble, to make the final Score Havant & Waterlooville Boys 2 Spartan Colts 2.

Travaux 2-5 Spartan Colts (21 Nov 2004) Ports Cup
 | Spartan deservedly progressed to the next round after a shining performance of resolve, good football, and cool play. Travaux scored first, against the run of play but Spartan hit back in minutes and then went 2-1 down after an edge of the area shot from a player that should have been closed down. Jenks levelled the score from the penalty spot near the half hour mark. The team shape was upset when Tom, in goal, collided with DK and a Travaux forward making a brave save and was unable to continue. Michael 'Jenks' Jenkins pulled on the keepers shirt, reluctantly at first, and produced an inspiring display of keeping for the rest of the match. Martin Brazier played a solid game after being moved to centre midfield as a result of the reshaping. In the second session, Spartan scored 3 more times with goals from Mark, Mike, and Baz to secure the win. At times Spartan made it hard work and made the battling Travaux side, whose manager was getting more wound up by the minute, look good but the superior soccer skills shone through. It was particulary rewarding to watch the defence playing their way out of trouble instead of 'hoofing' the ball out. Man of the Match was awarded to Jenks for his total performance and team spirit. Final score, Travaux 2, Spartan Colts 5.

Spartan Colts 3-1 Moneyfields (28 NOV 2004)
 | Against an unbeaten Moneyfields Spartan produced the best football of the season to take all three points. Not only did they play some delightful football they also won the majority of the challenges and dominated the game. However it was Moneyfields who took a shock lead with a well taken effort lobbing the stranded Tom Price in goal after a pass back was intercepted. Maybe because they had been playing so well but Spartan never dropped their heads and soon levelled with well taken goal from Mark Gawn. Credit has to be given to the ageing referee for being up with play and allowing an advantage after Liam McCorrmick was fouled as he ran at the Moneyfields defence. Liam than quickly added a 2nd, this time avoiding a foul as he once again attacked Moneyfields and then let fly with what was thought to be his weaker left foot and the ball crashed in. More chances were created for both Liam and Mark but the Moneyfields defence managed to keep the score to 2 at half time. Also Tom Price brought of a virtual point blank stop late on to take Spartan in at half time 2-1 up. The 2nd half Moneyfields started to create a few chances but the defence held tight, the midfield worked hard and the front line tracked players back to keep the shots restricted to long range efforts. Spartan were still creating chances too and were unlucky on at least 2 occasions to increased the lead with Mark Gawn going close with headers. Eventually Spartan took the game beyond the reach of Moneyfields with a well worked and taken goal saw Mark Gawn grab his second with a great header from a inch perfect cross from, Man of the Match, Scott Allen Well done to all the players from both teams today. It was a very hard fought, great game of football in slippy conditions and hardly a foul committed. Thank you all, it was a great game to watch

City Royals 0-2 Spartan Colts (5 Dec 2004)
 | Spartan Colts took the game to the City Royals team in a near perfect display of soccer from the Spartan team. Spartan Colts dominated the play in the first session with close and accurate passing, and long and accurate passing. The Royals keeper kept them in the game time and time again before a powerful strike from McCormick hit the net, further attempts on goal, and there were many, were kept away by the outstanding keeping. Price in the Spartan goal on the other hand had a boring half with not much to do. The Spartan back four closed any attack down before it could get going and the ball was fed out to midfield, onto the forwards for another attack on the Royals goal and were never really troubled. Spartan kept the slim lead into the break. City Royals started the second session with renewed vigour and Spartan were put on the back foot for a short while before dominating the second session as well. Royals had some strikes on goal this half but Price, and the back four ensured none of these were converted. A solo effort by McCormick, scoring from a seemingly impossible angle, gave Spartan a comfort zone but the keeper, once again, kept out shot after shot, as did the bar, and the post. Spartan could not defeat the Royals keeper again and finished the game deserving victors. It was difficult to pick a single man of the match for Spartan as the whole TEAM played excellently and were a credit to the game. Mark Gawn was a close runner up to the Man of the Match Michael (Mitch) Austin whose play, and voice, was everywhere. The spectators were rewarded with a good, well officiated game, despite some initial reservations and the game was left to flow, which it did time after time whenever Spartan got the ball. Credit goes to the City Royals team, especially the goalkeeper, for keeping the goals tally to only two.Well done lads. Final score City Royals 0-2 Spartan Colts.

Spartan Colts 0-2 Purbrook Youth (12 Dec 2004)
 | Spartan Colts unbeaten run came to an end against Purbrook when they somehow lost 2-0. Spartan had the majority of the game and for long periods dominated the game. Against the run of play Purbrook took a half time lead when Scott Allen inadvertently forced the ball in to Spartans net from close range. Before this Spartan had gone close to taking the lead with chances from Liam McCormick, Mark Gawn and Baz Snelling. On two occasions Purbrook brought down Liam as he was clean through on goal and were only rewarded with freekicks just outside the area. Spartan continued to dominate and Mark Gawn was unlucky with a close range header going inches over the bar after a fantastic Spartan move. The 2nd half was much the same this time with Mike Jenkins and, joint men of the match, Michael Austin and Jo Terry all going close. The Purbrook keeper was having one of those games and looked in great form as he saved chance after chance. Late on Purbrook made the result safe with a 2nd breakaway goal.

Havant and W'ville 0-4 Spartan Colts (9 Jan 2005) Ports'
 | Spartan Colts started 2005 in fine style with am impressive Cup win against H&W. With the game only minutes old 'Man of the Match' Mark Gawn was hacked down after beating the Havant defender with skill and pace. The resulting free kick from Jenks was superbly met at the far post, by Nick Jennings powerful header, to open the scoring. Soon after, the score was doubled when Baz Snelling ran on to a perfect through ball and smashed the ball home from the edge of the box. The game was by no means won and Tom Price in goal was called on to push away a good effort from Havant. With this scare Spartan again pushed harder and Baz was persistent and strong when grabbing his 2nd of the game to take Spartan in 3-0 up at the break.
Spartan were consistently quicker to the ball and never let Havant settle in to the game. Mark Gawn was a persistent threat to the opposition with little or no luck. His efforts were either saved, close or hit the post but everyone was struck cleanly and with power. With the game won Tez grabbed a typically Tez goal, finally blasting the ball home from 6 inches. It was a great team performance with everyone playing superbly in very difficult conditions.

Purbrook Youth 0-3 Spartan Colts (16 Feb 2005)
 | Despite a poor pitch and a borrowed kit (Thank you Bridgemary Colts) Spartan Colts continued their run of wins and clean sheets. Before PYFC could even begin to try and muscle their way in to the game the Spartan players were winning the challenges and playing some excellent football around them. With 15 minutes gone a pin-point Dave King (DK) free kick was smashed home from close range by Elliot(Ells) Fairweather. The PYFC keeper was the only thing stopping Spartan going further in front, with a stream of excellent saves. However despite his efforts Barry (Baz) Snelling coolly slid the ball home from another superb cross from Ells. It is safe to say that the 2-0 lead Spartan had at half time was not a true reflection on the dominance that had on the game. After the break and early strike from Man of the Match Michael (Mitch) Austin sealed the points for Spartan Colts following an unselfish pass from Mark (goalless) Gawn ;-).
The only addition to the success of the day was the superb defensive performance and the protection of Tom Prices clean sheet in the Spartan Goal Final score: PYFC 0 Spartan Colts 3 Played at Emsworth Bog Team (goals scored in brackets)

Spartan Colts 4-1 Copnor NE (27 Feb 2005)
 | After a long break due to no fixtures available and then a break due to School Ski trips etc Spartan began again as they had finished six weeks previous. It took a little time for the Spartan lads to settle and rode the early pressure from Copnor. However Tom Price in goal organised his defence well and didn't have a save to make. Once this was over Spartan hit with power. A perfect 'slide rule' pass from Mitch put Mark Gawn through to finish in style. Five minutes later Mark was grabbing his 2nd after a good move down the left saw Doc cross with perfection and Mark slide in to hammer the ball home. Doc very nearly scored direct from a corner but was unlucky to see his effort headed off the line. Mitch then made space to release a powerful shot only for the Copnor keeper to save with his fingertips. With half time approaching Copnor earned a penalty and Pricey made a fantastic effort getting a good hand to the shot only to see the ball go into the side netting. Spartan could quite easily have gotten nervous, but they didn't. With only minutes before half time, Baz added Spartans 3rd and 4th with two fantastic shots to take Spartan in 4-1 up at the break. After the break Spartan used the conditions and the pitch superbly. Mark and Baz had chance after chance to grab their hat-tricks but to no avail. The closest Spartan came to scoring was a crisp 20 yard shot from Scotty that tested the keeper. Baz, the attacker, then became Baz the defender, when he superbly headed off the line from a corner. With 15 minutes remaining the long break in the fixtures began to show with the 11 Spartan players looking tired. Man of the Match, Jo 'Tezza' Terry, dominated in the middle of the park making himself a pain to the Copnor team. Pricey was called in to action late on but protected the 3 goal lead Spartan had achieved.

Stubbington 1-1 Spartan Colts (6 April 2005)
 | As the league are unable to decide if the fixture between Spartan and United Services, cancelled due to a no show by United, is to be played or the points given to Spartan, it was announced that the game between Stubbington and Spartan was to be the final farewell from Kevin Allen who has managed Spartan for the past 10 years. Before the game Kevin's last team talk included a request to go out and fully enjoy the last game and show the Hampshire Cup finalists just how the game should be played. The Spartan players did just that and took the game to Stubbington. After a shaky 5 minute start where the team got to know each other again after a break of six weeks Spartan began playing at a pace that Stubbington found hard to match. The Spartan midfield of Tez, Mitch, Jenks and Doc worked hard to win the ball and feed the two forward players of Ells and, Man of the Match, Mark Gawn. The hard work and smooth wide play was rewarded when a beautifully flighted corner from Doc was met by Scotty who powerfully guided home for his first goal in two seasons. Spartan were denied extending their lead by some last ditch defence work and good Keeping but they restricted Stubbington to only one attempt on the Spartan goal. In the second half the patched up Spartan side were put under more pressure but Jethro, DK, Nick and Scotty were all equal to the pressure and held the line superbly. Later on in the half the injuries to Tez and Jenks became too much with Jenks having to play upfront as he was unable to keep up the work rate and Tez had to withdraw from the game completely with ten minutes to go. The 10 man Spartan still refused to buckle and late on Tom Price, in goal, pulled off a couple of excellent and important saves to keep the lead. With only 30 seconds left on the watch the 10 man Spartan we beaten with a scrappy finish from a corner. Spartan we disappointed but having only 8 fully fit players against probably the best team in the league a win would have been fantastic but a draw was a superb result. This brings a close to the season and I would like to thank the players and supporters for all their hard work this season. I am extremely proud of the lads and wish them all the very best of luck in their future footballing careers. Presentation Night is preliminarily booked for 11th June @ Fleetlands Football Club. Mac would like to take this opportunity to thank the Supporters, and the Players for their efforts over the years.
Special thanks must go to Kevin Allen for his passion and unending efforts over the years for the lads of Spartan Colts.I have learned a lot and been proud to have been part of this team that is like an extended family to me. Kev was always passionate about the team, some times a bit too much passion :-), and the lads best interests were at heart at all times. There have been ebbs and flows with results but the spirit was always there. They are a great bunch of lads and I wish them healthy lives in whatever they choose to do. They ALL have the resolve to grow into fine, successful men. Best of luck lads. Mac |
