Sports Volunteer of the Year
Recognise those Volunteers
Recognition is also given to the important Volunteers in local sport again at both Junior and Senior level and it is hoped that a wide range of nominations will be received especially from schools and colleges.
This award is open to all those who volunteer time to local sport and for juniors can be include those involved in JLSA or CLSA Award schemes.
Last years finalists were -
Sue Hillyard (Basingstoke Sports Council) Sue is the current secretary of the very busy and totally voluntary local Sports Council. This entails involvement with the organisation if the annual German twinning festival of Sport and of course the annual local sports awards. In addition there are a range of initiatives and secretarial duties to be coordinated. Sue also plays a major role in the development of sport at St Mary’s Junior School especially with Athletics and Netball. Last year she was coordinator and team manger of Basingstoke’s entry at Athletics in the Hampshire Mini Games.
Roger Parsons (Basingstoke Rugby Football Club) Roger joined the club in 1974 and has been a valued volunteer ever since and for the last nine years, the backbone of the volunteer workforce. He has been involved in a range of projects, and is the club’s cameraman, fulfilling a vital role to allow team performance monitoring. It is impossible to calculate his voluntary hours but is equivalent to a permanent member of staff. He has worn many hats during 30 years service, including barman, electrician, plumber, carpenter, plasterer and painter and is well overdue recognition.
Jackie Tobin (Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletics Club) Jackie joined Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletics Club in 1996 and has since served as a committee member in various roles supporting many sections of the club. In 1999 she took on the role of Manager of the Clubs’ National Junior League Team and in addition Jackie has supported the club, County Association and Hampshire Schools events as a Track Official and has for several years been a selector for the Aldershot Schools Track and Field and Cross Country Teams. Additionally she is now Team Manager National Junior League / Men’s Secretary – British Athletics League, plus UKA Coach.
Other extremely worthy nominations for the Volunteer award were - Tony Sellwood (Hook FC), Guy Blagborough and Gavin Stones (Basingstoke Hockey Club) for their efforts managing, coaching and developing Junior Hockey, Neil Buckner, Glen Mallaby and Gerry May (Basingstoke Rugby Club) for similar efforts, Andy Chapman (Bishopswood School) and Karen McKenzie (Silchester School) for recent voluntary efforts to develop sport at their schools, The teachers and sporting staff from St Mary’s Junior School who give hours of voluntary time to develop local sport and in fact all sport teachers from Basingstoke & Deane.
Nomination forms are available on request from either the Borough Council (01256 845442) or the Local Sports Council (Sue Hillyard - 01256 811478). They can be either posted or emailed by return.
